Haven Lake Campground Introduce
For Californians seeking an authentic, off-the-grid camping experience amidst stunning natural beauty, Haven Lake Campground offers a unique and intimate retreat. Tucked away in the breathtaking Lakes Basin Recreation Area within the Plumas National Forest, near the historic town of Sierra City, this small campground provides a genuine escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s a place where the sounds of the forest and the lapping of lake waters replace urban noise, inviting you to truly unwind and reconnect with nature.
Haven Lake Campground stands apart from larger, more developed sites due to its modest size and rustic charm. With only four campsites, it offers a sense of privacy and seclusion that is increasingly rare. This intimate setting ensures a quieter experience, even when all spots are occupied, allowing campers to fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of the high Sierra. It caters to those who appreciate simplicity, self-reliance, and the raw beauty of California's wilderness. While it may require a bit more preparation in terms of bringing your own water and bug spray, the reward is an unparalleled opportunity for fishing, quiet contemplation, and exploring the vast network of trails in this spectacular region.
Haven Lake Campground is located near Sierra City, CA 96125, USA, nestled within the expansive Plumas National Forest. Specifically, it is situated in the renowned Lakes Basin Recreation Area, a geological wonderland carved by glaciers, featuring over 20 scenic lakes. This region is a true jewel of the Sierra Nevada, offering dramatic landscapes of towering peaks, pristine alpine lakes, and dense forests. The nearby town of Sierra City is a historic gold mining town, providing a charming glimpse into California's rich past and offering basic services.
Accessibility to Haven Lake Campground, while rewarding, requires a degree of preparation. Access to some campsites is via "rough unpaved roads," as noted by the Forest Service, which means that smaller trailers can fit, but larger RVs might find the journey challenging. Campers should be prepared for off-road conditions on the final approach. Its location makes it a suitable alternative if nearby, more popular campgrounds like Gold Lake or Gold Lake 4x4 are full, suggesting it’s a bit more off the beaten path. Despite the potentially rugged access, the campground's proximity to more than 20 small lakes, many accessible by hiking trails, makes it an excellent base for exploration. For major supplies or services, nearby towns like Graeagle, Blairsden, and Bassetts are within a reasonable driving distance, ensuring that while you feel secluded, you are not entirely cut off from civilization. The high elevation, around 6,700 feet, contributes to the area's refreshing climate and stunning vistas.

Haven Lake Campground Reviews
Small campsite (4 spots) and there is good space between the sites and the site I chose by the water was large. Fee is $22/night. There is a single toilet which was clean and garbage can. Wood was stacked throughout the campsite, I suppose from recent area cleanup. Was trying to camp Gold Lake 4x4 or Gold Lake with no reservation but they were both full. This was nearby and the best I could do before nightfall. Would've given it 5 stars but I went to the lake to get water to drown my campfire and shone my light in the water and 4-5 large leeches greeted me. I had hoped to go in the water, but no thanks. Leeches creep me out. Bring bug spray, mosquitos are plentiful which is to be expected of areas close to water.
