Gunter Hill Campground boasts several features and highlights that contribute to its appeal as a local camping destination.
- Two Distinct Sections: The campground is divided into at least two sections: Antioch and Katoma. Reviews suggest that the Katoma section is generally perceived as better maintained and more manicured, with concrete sites. This offers campers a choice depending on their preference for amenities and upkeep.
- Newer Bathroom Facilities in Certain Areas: While the overall upkeep of some areas might vary, there are reports of new and clean shower/bath facilities, particularly near site 130 in one of the sections. This is a significant plus for campers who rely on shared facilities.
- Good Drainage on Campsites: At least one user reported good drainage on their site even during heavy rain, which is a crucial feature for a comfortable camping experience, especially in Alabama's climate.
- Proximity to Local Entertainment: For those who enjoy a bit of local flavor, the campground's proximity to Saturday night auto racing across the street was highlighted as an enjoyable feature by one visitor. This adds an unexpected element of entertainment for some campers.
- Scenic Environment (with a caveat): While the natural setting along the water is undoubtedly a highlight, it's important for potential visitors to be aware of the presence of poison ivy, particularly in wooded and less-manicured areas like parts of the Antioch section. Despite this, the overall natural environment offers opportunities for relaxation and connection with nature.
- Concrete Pads in Katoma Section: The presence of concrete pads in the Katoma section offers a more stable and potentially cleaner camping experience, which is a significant advantage for RVers and those who prefer a more developed campsite.

Gunter Hill Campground Reviews
My experience at this campground:I stayed at Antioch section. It looks pretty round down, but the bathrooms are fairly new. This is what the person at the gate told me. I did not check them out since I have a bathroom in my camper. The roads are terrible, and the grounds are not manicured or well kept. I would’ve not left a review if it wasn’t for what I experienced. I am highly allergic to poison ivy and I have never been to any campground or even a public park that had as much poison ivy as this camp ground. I looked everywhere I stepped, but it is Almost impossible to not step on it. I spent three nights, on the third night I started breaking out; by the time I got to my home from my 2 Hour drive I had poison ivy all over. If you are highly allergic to poison ivy, avoid this park. I did ride my bike several times to Katoma (the other section of the park) and that one looks much better, manicured and taken care of. Since the sites are concrete you do not have to worry about stepping all over the poison ivy to get inside of your camper, but I am not sure if that section also has it all around the woods and trails. I rode my bike in the streets of that section (did not go inside the camp sites to explore the surrounding area) be safe if you stay there!
May 26, 2025 · Barbie EspinoWe stayed 10 days in site 130. It is next to the shower/bath facilities, which are new and clean! We suffered a lot of rain, but good drainage on our site. We enjoyed Saturday night auto racing, right across the street. Perfect spot for base camp to visit historic Selma and Montgomery.
Jun 11, 2025 · Susan BallCamp grounds very niceCamping sites very cleanWe were on site 65 next to bath house. We were here 4 days and not once were the bathrooms cleaned. One toilet was completely stopped up with toilet paper and poo, one wouldn't flush, and pieces of toilet paper and towel paper everywhere. Showers were not cleaned either. That alone puts the first 2 ratings on camp grounds useless.
May 01, 2025 · tommy davisI liked this park quite a bit, stopped to overnight and winterize. I’m rating it a 4 and not a 5 because it rained overnight and my sewer and electric were in a giant puddle. There was three inches of water surrounding my power pedestal which made me very uncomfortable. Having said that this issue was not the case for most sites just some as I was looking at other sites walking my dog. I will return to this place.
Jan 26, 2025 · RpkNice and spacious and level sites for rvs. Could do with bridge repair on the one hiking trail there. The bathrooms do the job. Loved kayaking from the boat ramp. Does get a weird odor from time to time that disappears as quick as it comes.
