It is part of the Inyo National Forest and is managed to provide a natural and peaceful camping environment.

The allure of Gull Lake, known for its excellent fishing and opportunities for non-motorized boating like canoeing and kayaking, is a major draw. Some spots even boast "canoe laughing at each spot," hinting at the relaxed, paddle-friendly atmosphere. While it may not be "the most welcoming for camping in November" due to winter conditions, the campground is undeniably "quite picturesque" during its operational season. Its beauty extends even into the colder months, making it a scenic spot year-round for those prepared for cooler temperatures. Gull Lake Campground offers a classic Eastern Sierra experience, perfect for those seeking to connect with nature by the water.
Gull Lake Campground is idyllically located at Gull Lake Campground Rd, June Lake, CA 93529, USA, placing it directly on the shore of Gull Lake within the scenic June Lake Loop. This makes it an integral part of one of California's most cherished mountain destinations, offering both convenient access and breathtaking natural beauty.
The June Lake Loop (State Route 158) is a popular and well-maintained scenic byway that branches off U.S. Route 395. Accessing Gull Lake Campground is straightforward for travelers coming from both Northern and Southern California. From the south, after passing through Bishop and Mammoth Lakes on U.S. 395, you would take the south entrance to the June Lake Loop (SR 158). From the north, after passing Mono Lake, you would take the north entrance to the loop. Gull Lake Campground is typically one of the first campgrounds encountered when entering the loop from the south.
The roads within and leading to the campground are generally paved or well-maintained, making it accessible for various vehicle types, including RVs and trailers. However, visitors should always be mindful of mountain driving conditions. Due to its elevation (approximately 7,600 feet), the June Lake Loop, including Gull Lake Campground, is subject to seasonal closures. The loop itself usually opens in late April or early May, once snow has cleared, and typically closes for the winter in November. Therefore, the prime camping season is generally from late spring through early fall. While the area is picturesque in winter, as one reviewer noted, camping directly at the campground is not possible when the loop is closed due to snow. It's always essential to check Caltrans and Inyo National Forest websites for current road and campground opening/closing dates before planning your trip.

Gull Lake Campground Reviews
Winter suits Gull Lake quite nicely. Not the most welcoming for camping in November, but quite picturesque.
Dec 18, 2024 · Matt BPeaceful place. It's by the water. I snagged a ff place by chance for one night. So I didn't get a good feel for it. Loved my stay and water would be nice. The spots near water have canoe laughing at each spot.
Sep 08, 2023 · Adam HarrimanStayed here for Fishmas ‘24. We stayed at campground #3. A slight slope in our RV but a couple of leveling blocks fixed that. The space next to us (#4) was much more level. Next time we go back we’ll definitely book that instead. Bathrooms were close to us but were clean during our stay. Met the host who was super friendly. A bit chilly but that’s expected given the elevation. Even though we weren’t by the water it was close to our space. Pretty quiet given that we were next to the road. We enjoyed our stay and looking forward to coming back.
May 13, 2024 · Mark Anthony Gamab (Mark PLSTK)We were at L.G. Barnes camp grounds. The staff were great. There were animals, water activities and games in the main Lodge. We played pool and had campfires in the evening.
Sep 22, 2024 · Joseph OlafsonWe rent a boat for 2 days. and did fishing. We catched 5 fishes total !Enjoyed it till wind blowing and rain afternoon both days.
