One of my favorite campgrounds. The view is very good during the day and awesome at night. I get very good cell phone service too. Campsites are well maintained and the kybo is clean. It gets very windy here at times but I love the sounds. The PCT runs thru and trail angels stock water by the old water tank. Great basecamp for short night hikes. - Glenn Robins

With glowing testimonials from visitors who praise its views, cleanliness, and excellent cell service (a rare find in the wilderness!), it's clear that Guffy Campground offers a refreshing and memorable experience. Let’s explore what makes Guffy Campground an ideal choice for your next outdoor adventure in Southern California.

Location and Accessibility

Guffy Campground is located on Blue Ridge Truck Trail, Forest Service Rd 3N39, Wrightwood, CA 92397, USA. This placement sets it high up in the Angeles National Forest, offering an elevated and somewhat secluded camping experience overlooking the town of Wrightwood and the surrounding San Gabriel Mountains. For Californians, particularly those in Southern California, Wrightwood is a popular destination for mountain recreation, known for its winter sports and summer hiking.

The campground sits on top of a high mountain ridge, providing its acclaimed "very good" views during the day and "awesome" views at night, a significant draw for stargazers and landscape photographers alike. Access to Guffy Campground involves navigating Forest Service Road 3N39, which is a rough dirt road. While generally suitable for most vehicles for the first 5 miles, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended or required for the final stretch to the campground, especially after the first 5 miles. This suggests a slightly rugged approach, adding to the sense of an authentic wilderness experience. It is important to note that Blue Ridge Road (Forest Service Road 3N06), which provides access, is subject to seasonal closures from early/mid-November to late-April/early-May due to snow and other conditions. During these times, Guffy Campground becomes hike-in only, approximately 6 miles from Inspiration Point and Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2).

Despite its seemingly remote feel, Guffy Campground benefits from being relatively well-situated for accessing various outdoor activities in the Angeles National Forest. It's a popular resting area for hikers along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which literally runs through or very close to the campground. This direct access makes it an ideal basecamp for both short day hikes and longer excursions along this iconic trail. While Guffy is one of the smaller campgrounds with only six campsites, its high elevation makes it a great summer camping destination, offering respite from the heat of lower elevations. Its location ensures a peaceful retreat while still being within a reasonable drive for many Southern California residents.

Services Offered
  • Campsites with Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Guffy Campground offers six individual campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, which often includes a grilling grate. These basic amenities are essential for cooking and enjoying traditional campfire experiences.
  • Vault Toilets (Kybo): The campground provides vault toilets, often referred to as "kybos" in camping vernacular. Reviews indicate these facilities are kept clean, which is a significant positive for a more rustic campground. It's important to note that vault toilets are non-flushing.
  • No Potable Water: It is important for campers to be aware that Guffy Campground does not have running water or potable water on site. Visitors must bring all their own water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. However, "trail angels" are known to stock water by an old water tank, particularly for PCT hikers, but this should not be relied upon as a primary water source for camping.
  • Free Camping (with Pass): Guffy Campground is a free, developed campground offered by Angeles National Forest. However, an Adventure Pass or Interagency Pass is required to be displayed for camping.
  • Cell Phone Service: Uniquely for a remote mountain campground, reviews indicate "very good cell phone service," allowing campers to stay connected if desired, or for emergency purposes.
  • Proximity to Pacific Crest Trail (PCT): The campground's direct connection to the PCT is a key service for hikers, providing a convenient stopping point or basecamp.
  • Well-Maintained Campsites: Reviews suggest that the campsites themselves are "well maintained," indicating efforts by the Forest Service to keep the individual sites clean and tidy for visitors.

For Californians, Guffy Campground in Wrightwood stands as an exceptionally suitable and appealing destination, particularly for those seeking a genuine mountain escape that blends natural beauty with surprising convenience. Its unique characteristics align perfectly with what many locals value in an outdoor adventure, offering a distinct experience that sets it apart from more commercialized campgrounds.

One of the most compelling reasons for Californians to choose Guffy is its stunning views. The panoramic vistas during the day and the "awesome" night skies provide an immediate sense of grandeur and tranquility, easily accessible from major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles. For urban dwellers, this quick access to such dramatic natural beauty is invaluable, offering a profound sense of escape without requiring extensive travel time. The high elevation also makes it a fantastic summer retreat, providing a cooler environment when lower elevations are sweltering.

Furthermore, Guffy Campground's direct access to the Pacific Crest Trail is a huge draw for the state's active population. Whether you're an avid long-distance hiker or simply enjoy a scenic day hike, the opportunity to literally step onto the PCT from your campsite is a unique highlight. This integration with a world-renowned trail offers endless possibilities for exploration and adds a layer of adventure to your stay. The availability of "trail angels" stocking water, while not a primary service, speaks to the vibrant hiking community that surrounds the PCT, creating a welcoming atmosphere for those who embrace the trail.

The surprising benefit of "very good cell phone service" is another key factor for local suitability. In an era where staying connected can be important for emergencies or simply for sharing beautiful moments, Guffy offers a rare blend of remote beauty with a touch of modern convenience. This allows campers to truly disconnect while still having a safety net. The fact that the "kybo is clean" and campsites are "well maintained" further enhances the experience, demonstrating that even basic amenities are cared for, contributing to a comfortable and pleasant stay.

While the campground can be windy at times, and the road requires a bit of an adventurous spirit (especially for the final stretch or during seasonal closures), these characteristics contribute to its untouched charm. For Californians who appreciate a more rustic, quiet camping experience and are prepared for minimal amenities (like bringing their own water), Guffy Campground offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in the majestic San Gabriel Mountains. It's a place where you can enjoy breathtaking views, connect with an iconic trail, and find true serenity, all within reach of home.
