For us, as Montanans, finding the perfect camping spot often means balancing the desire for serene natural beauty with the convenience of essential amenities. We appreciate a place where we can truly relax, enjoy the outdoors, and still have access to the comforts that make a trip enjoyable. Grey Sandy Campground & Store, located near Helena, Montana, presents itself as a valuable option for both transient travelers and those looking for a longer-term stay in the heart of Big Sky Country. This campground has recently undergone significant improvements under new management, making it an increasingly attractive destination for locals seeking a well-maintained and welcoming environment.
Situated in the scenic area surrounding Hauser Lake, Grey Sandy Campground & Store offers a blend of practical facilities and access to outdoor recreation. We'll also delve into why this campground is particularly suitable for us, the Montanans, looking for a reliable and comfortable base for our adventures near Helena.
Grey Sandy Campground & Store is conveniently located at 6568 Hauser Dam Rd, Helena, MT 59602, USA. The campground is situated centrally between Black Sandy State Park and White Sandy State Park, indicating its prime location near Hauser Lake.
Access to Grey Sandy Campground is generally straightforward via paved roads leading off from the Helena area. The address on Hauser Dam Road implies direct access to the scenic area surrounding Hauser Lake, which is known for its recreational opportunities.
However, it's important for local users to be aware of certain aspects of its accessibility and connectivity. While the campground is not far from Helena, some visitors have noted "absolutely no cell service" within the campground itself, particularly for providers like Verizon/Visible, with service only returning about "2 miles towards town." This lack of consistent cell service can be a significant factor for those who rely on mobile connectivity for work or communication, so planning accordingly is advised. Despite this, the campground does offer Wi-Fi, which, while described as "ok" and "could be better," provides a crucial connection for guests. The drive itself is scenic, leading you towards the beautiful Hauser Lake, offering glimpses of Montana's natural charm as you approach your destination.

For us, the residents of Montana, Grey Sandy Campground & Store offers a practical and increasingly appealing option for our camping and lodging needs right in the Helena area. We understand the importance of convenience and value a place that genuinely caters to the local lifestyle, and Grey Sandy fits this mold in several key ways.
Firstly, its strategic location on Hauser Dam Road, just a short drive from Helena, makes it incredibly accessible. This means less time on the road and more time enjoying the beautiful Hauser Lake and its surroundings. For those of us living in Helena and nearby communities, it’s an ideal spot for a spontaneous weekend trip or even a comfortable base for a longer stay if work or other commitments keep us tied to the area. The proximity to Black Sandy and White Sandy State Parks further expands our recreational options, providing diverse access points to the lake.
Secondly, the range of services and ongoing improvements truly cater to a local Montanan's needs. The availability of full hookup RV sites is a significant draw, allowing for comfortable living even while camping. The inclusion of clean shower and laundry facilities is a major convenience, especially for those on extended trips or working locally, as noted by some guests. The on-site Vern's Country Store is a game-changer, stocking everything from beer to bait, saving us precious time and effort otherwise spent driving into town. This focus on practical amenities under the new management has clearly "turned this place around," as one local aptly put it, creating a more welcoming and functional environment.
While the lack of consistent cell service and uneven sites are points to note, the provided Wi-Fi offers a connection, and the other benefits often outweigh these minor drawbacks for many. The communal fire pit offers a safe way to enjoy a campfire ambiance, adapting to Montana’s often-present fire restrictions. The option for dry cabins and a vacation rental house also provides versatility for various local needs, from a quick solo escape to a family gathering.
In conclusion, Grey Sandy Campground & Store stands as a developing asset for the Helena area community. Its blend of accessible location, practical amenities, and dedicated management committed to improvement makes it a suitable and increasingly appealing choice for Montanans looking for a comfortable, convenient, and genuinely local camping experience. Grey Sandy Campground & Store Reviews
I would like to say how impressed I was with the current camp manager... They have really turned this place around. We stayed at Black Sandy and we were allowed to use the shower house here for 10 dollars a day and the facility is very clean along with laundry available.
Jun 22, 2025 · David JonesThis was just a basic average campground. There was no fire ban however the campground didn’t allow fires due to dryness. You have to pay $10 just to use bath house per day. Wi-Fi in campground was ok, but could be better especially for no phone service. Absolutely no cell service, until headed back out about 2 mi towards town (Verizon/Visible). The store was conveniently stocked and had a walk in beer cooler. (12 Pack Coors Light $16) Staff were nice! A few people staying full time there for work. Sites were un-even. Short drive down to the river which was $5 day use or state park side which was unknown fee. No playground for kids. Not much to do, probably stay closer to town if passing through again.
Aug 27, 2023 · Skip B.We stayed here in our travel trailer at the end of Summer 2022 & loved it. Our site was full hook ups. The owners are helpful, pleasant & very easy to work with. They're making a lot of changes to the grounds & we were told 2023 will bring on-site laundry facilities, several rental cabins, & a general store. There's already a communal gas fire pit & a pontoon boat that can be rented. The state park is within easy walking distance with lake access. There's also a boat ramp just up the hill. Grey Sandy is a really peaceful place & since we live fairly close, we'll definitely return. Pics are of the state park area & the campground.Updated for 2023: all facilities are now in place & open. The store has all kinds of food, drink & goods at fair prices. The cabins are adorable. We"ve been a couple times this season & got a pull thru site; we've had no trouble leveling. Dogs are welcome.
Aug 15, 2023 · Christine HWe were so fortunate to have come across this gem nestled in the hills, with true Montana outdoor vibes - hometown friendliness, the outdoors and consistent wildlife. Having the Helena Reservoir within a 5 minute walk from our 5th wheel was ideal. It was great to have our 42 ft and long bed f350 easily accommodated! It was a wonderful Basecamp for our summertime fun...photography, SUP, casual walks with the dog, trails and hiking, fishing, riding our ebikes! Ownership is engaging, kind and fun to be around. They have Starlink so we had consistent internet, which was a bonus! Other things I appreciated was the dog friendliness, evening fires and gathering around the huge propane firepit, visiting with people from all over, full services, cleanliness and of course, the Montana outdoors! The on-site convenience store was super and so nice to have pretty much everything you need right here! Access to the city is easy, plenty to do and see - what a history! Staff are friendly! Good community feel to it!
Sep 19, 2023 · Jennifer PierceWe were a bit skeptical of the entrance to Grey Sandy Campground but our 40ft Newmar Mountain Aire with Jeep in tow did great. Now for the campground. The owners are fabulous. The sites are graveled and leveled, each has its own fire pit with picnic table. 50 and 30 amp hookup with electric and sewer. There are 3 cabins, 1 house that is a airbnb. We didn't use those but did see inside the cabins. They are new and clean. Kristen and Casey are hard at work finishing the cabins. Their store got delivered on the first Monday we were there. It's going to be a great store. There is a community propane fire pit which made our nights relaxing. They also have a double decker Pontoon boat for rent. Check them out, stay for awhile and take in the beauty of East Helena Montana. Robyn & Don
