Its enduring popularity, with many families returning year after year, speaks volumes about the quality of the experience it offers. While like any outdoor destination, it has its unique considerations, its overall charm and location make it a standout choice for those looking for a genuine California camping adventure.
This article will guide you through the ins and outs of Greenhorn Campground, detailing its convenient location and accessibility, the array of services provided, its standout features, and practical contact information. Ultimately, we’ll explore why this particular campground is so well-suited for local Californians eager to explore the natural wonders right in their own backyard.
Greenhorn Campground is strategically located at 15000 Greenhorn Access Rd, Grass Valley, CA 95945, USA. This placement in Nevada County positions it within easy reach for many Northern and Central California residents. Grass Valley itself is a historic Gold Rush town, offering a charming backdrop and additional amenities just a short drive away.
The campground's primary appeal in terms of location is its direct access to Rollins Lake. This substantial reservoir is a hub for water-based activities, making the campground particularly attractive to those with boats, kayaks, or a love for swimming and fishing. The drive to the campground typically involves navigating scenic roads, leading you directly to the entrance.
For those traveling with larger vehicles like RVs or pulling campers, it's important to exercise caution upon arrival. While the roads leading to the campground are generally manageable, some internal roads, particularly those near popular lakefront spots, can become lined with boat trailers, potentially making backing in larger rigs a bit challenging. Additionally, be mindful of overhanging trees; one customer specifically noted a low-hanging branch that caused significant damage to their camper's canopy. Advanced scouts or careful maneuvering upon entry are advisable for larger setups.
Greenhorn Campground is readily accessible from major highways in the region. From Sacramento, the drive typically takes around an hour and a half, heading northeast on CA-80 and then connecting to CA-49 North towards Grass Valley. From Auburn, it’s an even shorter drive, making it an ideal weekend escape. Its convenient drive time from major population centers solidifies its status as a desirable local getaway for many Californians.
Greenhorn Campground aims to provide a comfortable and convenient camping experience, offering a range of services and facilities for its visitors. These amenities contribute significantly to its popularity and appeal for both tent campers and RV enthusiasts:
- Campsites: The campground offers a variety of campsites, including highly sought-after lakefront spots. These sites are designed to accommodate both tents and RVs, providing space for vehicles, and often include a picnic table and fire ring.

- Showers: Visitors can enjoy the convenience of showers. Feedback indicates that the showers are "nice," a welcome amenity, especially after a day of lake activities or hiking.
- Water Access: While the lake's water levels can fluctuate (as noted by a returning family), the primary draw is the access to Rollins Lake for recreational purposes. Potable water sources are typically available within the campground for campers' use.
- Boat Trailer Parking: Given its popularity with boaters, the campground area, especially near lakefront sites, is often used for parking boat trailers. This can sometimes impact maneuvering space for campers, as mentioned in customer feedback.
- Quiet Hours: The campground observes quiet hours, typically from 10 PM to 8 AM. While the 10 PM start might be flexible in practice, the 8 AM end time for generators can be a point of consideration for RV campers who prefer earlier morning power.

Greenhorn Campground Reviews
My family love this campground. We go every year.We get too lakefronts and too other campsites. And we love it, but this year the water was really, really low.And if it is going to be like that next year we will not be returning
Jul 04, 2025 · Amber MosesThe lady at the gate was REALLY nice. Their website is TERRIBLE, outdated, and why is it a bright yellow font?? Couldn't back the camper in as the road was lined with boat trailers. The quiet hours from 10pm-8am, the 10pm was loose, but man, I really wanted to start the generator earlier than 8. Showers were nice! Bathrooms are really pretty good. Be careful when pulling a camper. There's a tree that hangs just over the corner, and it ripped our entire canopy and damaged the whole corner of the camper.
Aug 27, 2024 · Alicia KarrickWe have been camping here for years, we book the lake front sites and enjoy having showers and flush-able toilets nearby for our tent campers in the family. Tom, the camp host does a wonderful job keeping everyone up to date on current lake levels and is very helpful with questions. If you are looking for a more quiet camp experience I would suggest booking sites farther away from the marina store, as they have huge campfire movie night and live music occasionally on the weekends. Personally I like being close to the fun... :)We camp several times throughout the summer months and are grateful to have this place so close to home.
Jul 17, 2024 · Verinia ZamoraVery, very gorgeous lake and surrounding terrain. Huge trees surrounding the other side of the lake, while semi barren lands on the side of the campground so you have space to pitch a tent or have an rv parked. Fire circle, standing fire grill, and picnic bench at every camp ground. We camped at rocky point #2 and had our own entrence to the lake along with pretty decent isolation from the rest of the campers. Only gave it 4 stars because the other campers were very, very loud playing music which they stopped by 9:30, but definitely don’t come here if you want peace and quiet. (We came on a Thursday) also, around $50 for one nights stay for the bare minimum of a camp site is pretty pricey for me. But overall, very nice campsite, lake to swim in, and view.
Jul 21, 2023 · syrusBeautiful lakeside campground with many spots for camping. We made the mistake of driving up on Memorial Day weekend without a reservation, but the incredibly nice campsite hostess squeezed us into spot "Pine and Three Quarters". The site is dog friendly and there is a local malamute that roams this campsite and the other nearby site. He is great and everyone seems to love being visited by him. There is easy access to the lake as a short walk to the shore where you can swim and kayak. There is a large general store on site. Definitely recommended.
