Grapevine Campground Introduce
Hello, fellow New Mexico explorers! When it comes to discovering the hidden gems of our state, few places offer the rugged beauty and serene isolation quite like the Gila National Forest. Tucked away near Silver City, in the heart of this vast wilderness, lies Grapevine Campground. This isn't your typical, amenity-heavy resort; it's a rustic and authentic camping experience that serves as a perfect launching point for exploring some of our region's most iconic natural attractions. Whether you're planning a visit to the historic Gila Cliff Dwellings or a rejuvenating soak in one of the many nearby hot springs, Grapevine Campground is an excellent choice for a quiet and convenient basecamp.
What makes Grapevine Campground so special is its location and its no-frills approach to camping. It's a place for those who are prepared to be self-sufficient and appreciate the simple things: the quiet of the wilderness, the beauty of the surrounding cliffs, and the scattered fire pits that invite a night of stories under the New Mexico stars. As a customer review noted, it's a "nice place to Boondock on the way to Gila Cliff Dwellings or the many hot springs." This laid-back atmosphere is exactly what many of us seek when we head out into the Gila—a true escape from the complexities of modern life.
The campground is named for an old grapevine that can still be seen today, a testament to the area’s long history and natural resilience. It is situated on the banks of the Gila River, with stunning cliffs serving as a backdrop. This natural scenery provides a sense of peace and tranquility that is hard to find elsewhere. The proximity to the river, even when it's just a trickle, adds to the charm and offers a refreshing element to the environment. The road leading into the campground crosses the river, which adds a touch of adventure to the arrival.
A stay at Grapevine is a chance to truly immerse yourself in the wilderness. You’ll be surrounded by towering trees and rugged terrain, with a variety of wildlife to observe. While a reviewer mentioned a minor drawback of "barking dogs," they also noted that the spacious, scattered sites allowed them to find a spot "away from most people," highlighting the campground's ability to offer solitude even when there are others around. This article will provide you with all the essential, factual information you need to prepare for a successful and enjoyable trip to this wonderful corner of the Gila National Forest.
Location and Accessibility
Grapevine Campground is located on E Fork Rd, near Silver City, New Mexico, with the address E Fork Rd, Silver City, NM 88061, USA. It is situated within the expansive Gila National Forest, a region of rugged beauty and diverse landscapes. The campground is notably a "boondocking" or dispersed camping area, meaning the sites are scattered and more primitive than a typical developed campground. It's an ideal spot for those who are seeking a more authentic, wilderness-like experience. The road leading to the campground is suitable for most vehicles, but caution is advised, especially after rain, as it crosses the river. A past visitor's warning that the road beyond the river is gated is an important detail for planning your approach. The location is an excellent choice for those traveling to or from the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, which is just a few miles away, as well as the nearby Gila Hot Springs.
Services Offered
Grapevine Campground offers a set of basic services that cater to the self-sufficient camper. It’s important to note that this is a primitive site, and visitors should come prepared with their own supplies.
- Public restroom: The campground has public restrooms, which are described by a reviewer as "two pit toilets."
- Restroom: The pit toilets provide a basic but necessary sanitation option for campers.
- Running water: A crucial detail for all visitors is that there is "no water" available. Campers must bring their own potable water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning.
- Camping fee: A camping fee is required to stay at this campground.
It is also worth noting that there is "no trash service" at the campground. All visitors are expected to practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out everything they bring in, including their garbage. This shared responsibility helps maintain the pristine condition of the area for everyone to enjoy. While the provided information mentions running water, a customer review explicitly states there is no water, and other sources corroborate that there is no potable water. Campers should rely on their own supply.

It offers the perfect combination of convenience and seclusion, allowing you to be close to these popular spots while still enjoying a peaceful night under the stars. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Nice place to Boondock on the way to Gila Cliff Dwellings or the many hot springs in the area. Two pit toilets but no water or trash service. Scattered rock fire pits amongst the trees. The road crosses the river going into private / gates closed area so don’t bother driving through it because there’s no camping beyond the river.
March 06 · SantiagoI stayed here back in October 2023. I arrived to the cliff dwelling area a little late the first day and set up camp here. It was awesome. I found a nice spot at the end, away from most people and their barking dogs . . That was the only minor drawback, but at least they were away from me.
January 20 · Willy NillieLocated near the Gila cliff dwellings, this is a great spot to get away, enjoy the local wildlife, wild camp, and wade in the crystal clear waters of the Gila river. To our surprise, the campgrounds were relatively empty and we found the perfect camp spot right on the river.Waters are relatively calm and quiet enough in many spots, making it safe for kids or just lounging around
May 21 · MotohaasSo close to the river, it was not the cleanest part of it but still fresh water and wide camping spaces. Theres a store campbells post very close to it has homemade ice cream that is a must. You will have a great time over there.
May 28 · Monica Estefania Ruvalcaba MartinezHad a great time with the family and pets. Bummer that they bathrooms arent open! I'm sure people could effectively social distance at the bathrooms!!!!
