Are you a Virginia local searching for a camping experience that prioritizes privacy, river access, and a genuine connection with nature? Gala River Front Campground, located at 80 Thompson Dr, Eagle Rock, VA 24085, USA, offers just that. This unique campground, nestled along the pristine James River, is designed for those who cherish seclusion and the soothing sounds of the water. Unlike larger, more bustling campgrounds, Gala River Front emphasizes individual privacy and direct access to one of Virginia’s most beloved waterways, making it an ideal choice for a serene escape right in your own backyard.
Gala River Front Campground has garnered positive reviews from campers who value its secluded nature. Visitors consistently highlight the "very private" campsites, with Site 1 specifically noted for being "very secluded and right on the river." Even Site 2, while offering "much more room," still provides an "elevated view of the river," ensuring that every camper enjoys a privileged connection to the beautiful surroundings. This commitment to privacy is a significant draw for those seeking a quiet retreat from everyday life.
Beyond the seclusion, campers appreciate the thoughtful amenities available. The presence of "firewood for sale" and a "clean Porta-potty" are frequently mentioned as practical conveniences that enhance the primitive camping experience. The "gated access to the campground" adds an extra layer of security and peace of mind, which is a big plus for many. While some reviews mention the proximity of the CSX railroad, noting that "the trains can be loud and run 24-7," many campers found it didn't bother them, suggesting that for those not easily disturbed by ambient noise, the many positives of Gala River Front far outweigh this minor drawback. Indeed, for those accustomed to natural sounds, it can even become part of the authentic outdoor atmosphere.
Gala River Front Campground is strategically located at 80 Thompson Dr, Eagle Rock, VA 24085, USA. This address places it squarely in Botetourt County, Virginia, a region celebrated for its scenic beauty and its prime position along the James River. For Virginia residents, this location offers a desirable blend of natural remoteness and convenient access. Eagle Rock is well-connected via State Route 220, making the campground relatively easy to reach by car from major population centers like Roanoke, Lynchburg, and surrounding areas in Central and Western Virginia. This straightforward drive means less time on the road and more time enjoying the river and your private campsite.
A key aspect of Gala River Front Campground's accessibility is its dual nature: it can accommodate both drive-in and paddle-in campers. Located about half a mile from the Gala boat landing and near river mile marker 51.5 on the James River, it serves as an excellent stop for those embarking on multi-day paddling trips. For paddle-in campers, the direct river access to each site is invaluable, offering a seamless transition from water to land. Drive-in campers benefit from a dedicated parking area at each site, allowing for easy unloading and setup.
The surrounding area also contributes to the campground's appeal. Eagle Rock is nestled within the beautiful Allegheny Mountains, providing a picturesque backdrop for outdoor activities beyond just river sports. Furthermore, a significant convenience highlighted by campers is the presence of Kelly's Market, a local convenience store located approximately 500 yards from the campground's front entrance. This proximity to essential supplies means campers don't have to venture far for groceries or last-minute items, blending the rustic experience with practical convenience.

Gala River Front Campground Reviews
This campsite is very private. I stayed in site 1, which was very secluded and right on the river. Site 2 did have much more room and an elevated view of the river. They had firewood for sale and a clean Porta-potty.
May 10, 2024 · Danny McDeevaGreat campground, Spot 2 is the most private, though we were the only ones here during our stay. The Port-a John was clean and empty so there was no odor. Having river access was nice and have a great view. The gated access to the campground and cheap fire wood for sale was also a big plus. The only draw back is CSX operates only a few hundred feet from the site so the trains can be loud and run 24-7. It did not bother us, but if you are someone disturbed by noise be sure to book a site further from the railroad.
May 04, 2022 · Chris “Gio” GiammatteoHad a decent stay. Site 1 is the most private in my opinion, as it's surrounded by trees and dead ends into a field at the end of the property. My biggest complaint is that the people who stayed in site 2 should've been made to get the group camping site further up the way because they had 10 people and 7 kids plus an off-leash dog that kept coming into our site and I thought it was supposed to be a maximum of 6 per single campsite. It was very difficult to enjoy the peace and quite when #2 was having a total party into the late hours on Friday. The train came through a few times in the night, but it was otherwise a very beautiful, clean place to enjoy. Hopefully soon they can get some running water. Although I saw several sites with big blue water jugs, ours didn't have any.
Jun 12, 2023 · Carrie MatthewsGreat campground. Good, thorough communication before we arrived. Campsites are fairly close to each other, and I'd avoid numbers 4 and 19 as they are right by the porta potties and dumpster. The porta potties were clean, stocked with TP. The site provides some firewood, which is nice. Sites 5-8 have nice/partial views of the water. Super convenient to canoe/kayak in or out of. Fyi-no water source so bring your own. Overall a good campsite to plan a tubing/kayak/canoe trip around. Not too far from I-64/I-81.
Aug 25, 2020 · Ken FerrellCamping in VA Blue Ridge seems to be a bit lacking, so I'm glad we stumbled on this place for a group camping trip. The folks at Twin River Outfitters were great in helping guide us on the right sites for our group. Since there's only one porta-potty it could be an issue if you had a large group, but since we had pretty much the entire campsite to ourselves it wasn't a big deal. Very secluded and private with a great backdrop!
