For us Californians, the pursuit of tranquility and a deep connection with nature often leads us to seek out those hidden gems, far removed from the urban sprawl. This unique, privately-owned campground offers a refreshing alternative to crowded public sites, providing a truly off-grid experience that encourages relaxation and rejuvenation.
Free Your Mind Camping isn't just a place to set up a tent; it's a philosophy. It’s about detaching from the digital noise and embracing the simple, profound beauty of the Pacific Northwest. With a welcoming host and a commitment to providing essential comforts amidst a remote setting, this campground is quickly becoming a favorite for those in Northern California seeking a peaceful retreat. Whether you're a seasoned camper or new to the off-grid lifestyle, this article will guide you through the distinctive features and benefits that make Free Your Mind Camping an ideal spot for your next wilderness adventure.
Free Your Mind Camping is remotely located at 1650 French Hill Rd, Gasquet, CA 95543, USA. Nestled high in the hills within a deciduous and pine forest at approximately 1913 feet in elevation, its secluded position is a major draw for those seeking quiet and unobstructed views of the night sky. Gasquet itself is a small, unincorporated community in Del Norte County, placing the campground within easy driving distance of some of California's most iconic natural attractions, including the Redwood National and State Parks and various river access points on the Smith River.
Reaching the campground requires navigating a dirt road, which, while described as "a bit bumpy," is generally manageable for various vehicle types, including 5th Wheel vehicles and Class C RVs (though no RV hook-ups are available). It's advised not to rush the drive, as the journey itself is part of the scenic experience. A key point for accessibility is that Google Maps might direct you past the actual entrance; visitors should look for the gate with the campground sign. The main entry gate has a manual lock, requiring a combination for entry, which emphasizes the private and secure nature of the property. This controlled access helps maintain the serene environment that campers cherish.
Private Campsites: The campground offers a limited number of campsites (around four), ensuring an intimate and less crowded experience. While some sites might feel a bit close, specific sites like "Woozle" are noted for their privacy.
Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with essential amenities, including a picnic table for dining and a fire ring for campfires, perfect for evening gatherings (fire permits are required).
Potable Drinking Water: A significant convenience, the host kindly provides a 5-gallon potable drinking water jar with a spigot at each campsite, along with an additional bucket of water specifically for dousing campfires. This thoughtful provision reduces the burden on campers to haul large quantities of water.
Outdoor Artesian Shower: An unique feature is the outdoor, cold-water artesian shower. Located down a path near a pond (for looking only, no swimming), it offers a refreshing experience amidst the open mountain air.
Compost Toilet: A single-use (compost bags), private, and enclosed portable bathroom (outhouse) is conveniently located near the camp area, providing a more comfortable alternative to primitive pit toilets.
Firewood Available: Bundles of firewood and kindling are available for purchase at an additional charge when booking your campsite, saving campers the hassle of sourcing their own wood.
Dog Friendly: Friendly pets are welcome at the campground, provided they are on a leash, making it a great option for those who travel with their furry companions.
Host Presence: The owner/host, Kirk, is frequently praised for being kind, welcoming, friendly, and attentive, often checking in on campers in the morning and evening without being intrusive. He also offers local insights and suggestions for activities.
While the campground offers a surprising level of convenience for an off-grid location, visitors should be aware that there are no traditional RV hook-ups (power, water, sewer) and no cell service or Wi-Fi, emphasizing the truly disconnected nature of the experience. Some reviews mention the sounds of peacocks and roosters, which contribute to the natural ambiance but might be a minor consideration for those seeking absolute silence.
Stargazer's Paradise: Due to its remote location far from urban light pollution, Free Your Mind Camping offers unobstructed, stunning views of the night sky, making it an ideal spot for stargazing.
Remote and Quiet Atmosphere: The "road less traveled" leads to a peaceful, nature-filled camping experience without car traffic or crowds, allowing campers to truly relax and unwind.
Proximity to Redwoods and River: The campground is just a short drive from the majestic Redwood trails and various access points to the clean, beautiful Smith River, offering diverse recreational opportunities.
Thoughtful Host Amenities: The provision of potable water and campfire dousing water at each site, along with firewood bundles, demonstrates a level of care and convenience not always found in remote or off-grid settings.
Unique Outdoor Shower: The cold-water artesian shower provides a refreshing and memorable experience, connecting campers more intimately with the natural environment.
Community and Intimacy: With only a few sites, the campground fosters a communal yet respectful atmosphere. As one reviewer noted, it allows for getting to know neighbors while still maintaining privacy in certain sites.
420-Friendly: The campground explicitly mentions being 420-friendly, which may appeal to a specific segment of campers looking for an open and relaxed environment.
While the overall experience is highly positive, potential cons mentioned by reviewers include a manual lock at the main entry that can occasionally get stuck, and suggestions for improving the overall "bathroom situation" despite the provided compost toilet. Some campers have also noted a slight lack of privacy at certain sites compared to others, but this is often balanced by the overall quiet and remote nature of the property.

Free Your Mind Camping Reviews
Remote location. Can see stars at night because it’s far from settlements. Some campsites don’t have as much privacy. We got lucky with Woozle. Host is kind to provide potable drinking water jar and water for dousing fire in fire pit. That’s the first I’ve seen.Cons: the manual lock at main entry tends to get stuck and can’t open the gate. It was frustrating. The bathroom situation could be improved.
Jul 09, 2024 · PuruThe campground is nice and clean with a clearing big enough for a 10x10 tent at the Fischer site. Google Maps took me to the owners house, which is one road past the campground entrance. Just go through the gate with the campground sign. There's a lock on it so you'll need the combo to get in. It's really quiet there and they also have a toilet setup which is really convenient. There is a shower too. The place is a short drive from Redwood trails and river access. We had an awesome time and will definitely be coming back. The camp site also had a large water container for washing hands and bundle of firewood with kindling. Really cool.
Jul 07, 2023 · Jeremy K.I stayed in Bear campsite. It is quite small - I could not fit a hammock and a tent at the same time. Also, there was not much privacy - the picnic table is right close to all the other campsites. Toilet is great, and there is a running water hose right close to the camping spot, which is great. I think if I was the only one staying there I would have just loved it.
Jul 02, 2023 · Maria ChaderinaFree-Your-Mind-Camping was absolutely beautiful! My husband and I are doing a cross country trip and camping along our way to save $, and this was worth the $50! The campsites are private and quiet, and can hear all the animals throughout the night, it’s so peaceful. They provide starter and fire wood, drinking water, a picnic table, and a covered bathroom spot! I would absolutely camp here again! The owners of the property are very communicative, kind, and helpful! Thank you so much Renee, Carlos and Kirk! 🤍🌲
