Do not take Forest Rd 18 as a short cut (if you are coming from Sacramento area). It is paved at first but it gets rough near bowman lake. I almost got stuck there. If you don’t have a 4x4 vehicle and/or never been offroad, do not take this shortcut.Bathroom is maintained daily. There is only 1 male and 1 female bathroom for around 10 campsites. There are very good hikes there and the view is amazing. - Ocho Blue

Location and Accessibility

Fir Top Campground is located in Sierraville, CA 96126, USA, within the expansive Tahoe National Forest. Its specific setting on the west side of Jackson Meadow Reservoir provides a tranquil and somewhat remote feel, making it an ideal destination for those looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Reaching Fir Top Campground requires a bit of planning, particularly for those unfamiliar with the area's forest roads. While standard GPS systems may suggest shortcuts, it is crucial to follow the recommended directions to ensure a smooth journey. From Interstate 80, take the Truckee/Highway 89 North exit. Continue on Highway 89 north towards Sierraville for approximately 17 miles. Turn west onto Forest Road 07 (Jackson Meadows turnoff) and travel for about 18 miles to Jackson Meadows Reservoir. After crossing the dam, proceed along the paved/gravel road for roughly four more miles, and you will arrive at the campground.

A crucial note for visitors, particularly those coming from the Sacramento area: avoid using Forest Road 18 as a shortcut. While it may appear paved initially, the road becomes very rough near Bowman Lake, and is not suitable for all vehicles, especially those without 4x4 capabilities or for drivers inexperienced with off-road conditions. Adhering to the main routes ensures a safer and more enjoyable journey to this beautiful destination.
