From the friendly hosts to the well-maintained trails, every aspect of this camp is designed to provide an unforgettable experience for equestrians and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
The journey of Elkins Creek Horse Camp began in 2008 when founder Rick McCleese, after years of horseback riding and camping across the nation, decided to build his dream of a safe, family-oriented campground for equestrians and their horses right here in Ohio. Joined by his wife Jill in 2009, they poured their passion for horses and the outdoors into transforming a former tobacco farm into the thriving camp it is today. Even after a devastating tornado in 2011, their dedication to rebuilding and improving the camp has only strengthened its appeal, making it a testament to resilience and community spirit.
What truly sets Elkins Creek apart is its unwavering commitment to providing an exceptional experience. Guests consistently praise the welcoming atmosphere, the cleanliness of the facilities, and the constant improvements made to both the camp and its extensive trail system. Many visitors, like those who have been coming since 2018, consider Rick and Jill "extended family," a testament to the personal touch and genuine hospitality that define this establishment. May 07, 2025 · COLEEN SPENCERWe've been coming to Elkins since 2018 and every year trails improve and the camp itself improves! Love Rick and Jill and they've now become extended family that we get to visit every year. Still our favorite campground!
Sep 15, 2024 · Nick and Kandice HendricksMy favorite place to ride and camp! Jill and Rick are always so helpful and I always make new friends there. The trails are well marked and well maintained. Thank you!
Apr 20, 2025 · maggie stackMy husband and I had a wonderful stay at Elkins Creek. We arrived late afternoon on Saturday and Rick greeted us at the entrance and quickly found us a wonderful site for our trailer next to the creek and stalls for our horses at the barn just 50 ft away. We got a short ride in that evening on the trails which are adjacent to the campground. Sunday was a bit rainy, but we got in a 3 hour ride on the paddle creek loop. Rained out Monday, but met a great group of ladies that were regulars. On Tuesday, Jill and the other ladies and us packed up the horses and trailered out to where the best views were by Lake Vesuvius and rode for 3 hours. Amazing ride and spectacular views! Campground is clean and rustic and very fun to stay at. Rick and Jill are laid back and very hospitable. We will be back again!
Oct 17, 2018 · Joanna WerrWe had another great stay and great riding at Elkins Creek. They were almost full but it didn’t feel crowded. We always enjoy seeing Rick and Jill who are super hosts. The trails were great! We especially enjoyed the Vista ride as well as multiple rides that took us through the super cool rock houses. We were completely offline with no internet which felt great! There is a house land line that you can use to call home.
