Dover AFB Famcamp Introduce
For military personnel, both active duty and retired, and other authorized users in Delaware and beyond, finding a convenient and affordable place to stay while traveling or enjoying a local getaway can be a real benefit. Dover AFB Famcamp offers just that: a dedicated RV campsite designed to serve the military community. Situated on the edge of the Dover Air Force Base airfield, it provides a unique opportunity for authorized individuals to enjoy a "quaint little RV campsite" with essential amenities and a quiet atmosphere.
This Famcamp is more than just a place to park your RV; it's a no-frills, efficient area that caters to the specific needs of military travelers. While it may not boast elaborate resort-style features, it excels in providing clean, functional, and well-located sites that are perfect for those seeking a practical and peaceful stay. This article is designed to provide local Delaware users within the authorized user community with a comprehensive overview of Dover AFB Famcamp, detailing its location, the services and features it offers, and why it remains a popular choice for those looking to explore the Dover area and enjoy the benefits of base access.
Dover AFB Famcamp is uniquely located at Las Vegas St, Dover, DE 19902, USA, placing it directly on the edge of the Dover Air Force Base airfield. This distinctive setting provides a secure and quiet environment, while also offering the unique experience of observing military aircraft operations, such as C-5 and C-17 touch-and-goes, which can be a captivating form of "entertainment nearby" for many visitors.
Accessibility to Dover AFB Famcamp is exclusively through the Main Gate of Dover Air Force Base. Authorized users, including Active Duty, National Guard, Reservists, Retired Military, 0-100% DAV, Purple Heart Recipients, Former POW, Veteran Caregivers, and DoD civilians, must possess a valid Department of Defense identification card to gain entry. Once on base, visitors are directed to turn right onto Atlantic Street, then right onto Purple Heart Street, and finally left onto Perimeter Road to reach the Famcamp. While the main gate can be "tight through the chicane" for larger rigs, it is manageable, and the commercial gate can also be used during specific hours.
The Famcamp's location offers more than just on-base amenities. It provides convenient access to local attractions in Dover and beyond. Just "across the street" from the campsite is the "huge playground" known as Eagles' Nest Park, complete with multiple play areas, pavilions, horseshoe pits, and volleyball nets, making it ideal for families. The base itself offers amenities like the Commissary and BX for convenient shopping. Beyond the base, Dover is home to attractions like Bally's Dover Casino Resort, which hosts NASCAR events and harness racing. Furthermore, the Famcamp is approximately "45 minutes away from the Rehoboth and Dewey Beaches," two of Delaware's top-rated coastal destinations, providing ample opportunities for beach trips and shore activities. This blend of on-base convenience and proximity to local attractions makes the Famcamp's location highly advantageous for authorized visitors to Delaware.
Dover AFB Famcamp provides a set of essential services designed to ensure a comfortable and efficient stay for its authorized guests. These services are integrated into the camping experience, offering convenience without unnecessary frills. Here's a breakdown of the services typically offered:
- Full Hookup RV Sites: The Famcamp offers 10 dedicated recreational vehicle (RV) sites, all equipped with full hookups. This includes water, electric (with 30/50 amp connections, though some reviews note certain sites may only have 30 amp), and sewage hook-ups directly at each site, providing maximum convenience for RV travelers.
- Picnic Tables & Grills: Each individual campsite is provided with a picnic table and a grill, allowing guests to enjoy outdoor meals and barbecues right at their site.
- Dump Station: For convenience, there is a dedicated dump station adjacent to the campground. This service is free for registered guests and available for a small fee ($4) for those not staying at the Famcamp.
- Bathhouse with Restrooms and Showers: A central bathhouse is available, featuring flush toilets and showers. Reviews consistently describe the showers as "clean & nice," with individual locking showers for privacy. There is one male and one female bathroom, each equipped with two stalls, one locking shower, and two sinks.
- Coin-Operated Laundry Facilities: For resident convenience, there is a laundry room within the bathhouse. It contains one washer (1.50perload)andonedryer(.25 for 5 minutes). While compact, it provides an essential service for extended stays.
- Large Dumpster: A large dumpster is provided for trash disposal, ensuring the cleanliness of the campground.
- "Dry Camping" Overflow Area: In situations where all full-service sites are occupied, the Famcamp may offer an "overflow area" for "dry camping," meaning no utilities are provided. This is an option when no other full hookup sites are available.
- Pet-Friendly Policy: Pets are allowed within the Famcamp, with specific rules. They cannot be left alone in the RV and must be on a leash 6 feet or less when outside the RV. Normal clean-up rules apply. (Note: Tent campers are generally NOT allowed to bring pets).
Dover AFB Famcamp, while described as "no frills," offers several key features and highlights that make it a desirable option for its authorized users in Delaware and beyond. These attributes contribute to a pleasant and practical camping experience.
- Exclusive Military Access: The most defining feature is its exclusivity to authorized military personnel (Active Duty, National Guard, Reservists, Retired Military, 0-100% DAV, Purple Heart Recipients, Former POW, Veteran Caregivers, DoD civilians, and sponsored guests). This ensures a secure and community-oriented environment tailored to the military lifestyle.
- Full Hookup Sites: All 10 campsites are "full hook-ups," providing water, electric (30/50 amp connections), and sewer at each site. This convenience is highly valued by RV travelers, minimizing setup and maximizing comfort. Sites are also noted to be "level and well maintained" and "spacious."
- Quiet and Peaceful Environment: Despite being on an active air force base, reviews consistently highlight the Famcamp as "quiet" and offering "peace of quiet." The primary noise comes from the occasional aircraft, which many find to be an interesting spectacle ("watching the C5 and C17's doing touch and goes was fun").
- Clean Bathhouse & Laundry: The bathhouse is well-maintained, with "clean and nice" showers and facilities. While there's only one washer and one dryer, their cleanliness and low cost ($.25 for 5 minutes for the dryer) are appreciated by users.
- Proximity to Eagle's Nest Park: Directly across the street, the "wonderful Eagles nest playground" offers a "huge playground" with "several playground areas," along with pavilions, horseshoe pits, and volleyball nets. This is a significant asset for families with children.
- Access to Base Amenities: Staying at the Famcamp provides authorized users with direct access to all base facilities, including the Commissary for groceries and the Base Exchange (BX) for shopping, offering tax-free purchases and military pricing.
- Observation of Aircraft: For aviation enthusiasts, the unique opportunity to observe C-5 and C-17 aircraft operations provides an added dimension to the stay that is not available at typical civilian campgrounds.
- Convenient Location for Regional Exploration: The Famcamp's location offers easy drives to local Dover attractions, including NASCAR races and harness racing at Bally's, and is only about 45 minutes from the popular Rehoboth and Dewey Beaches, making it a great base for exploring central and southern Delaware.
As a military Famcamp, Dover AFB Famcamp's "promotions and special offers" are generally structured around its pricing for authorized users rather than temporary discounts common in commercial campgrounds. The primary and consistent "offer" is the exceptionally affordable nightly rate provided to its eligible clientele, reflecting the benefits of military MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) programs.
Pricing at Dover AFB Famcamp is tiered, offering significant value to authorized users:
- Active Duty, Retirees, 100% Disabled Veterans: Daily rates are typically around $30-$35, with weekly rates ranging from $195-$230. This represents a highly competitive price for full hookup RV sites in the region.
- Retired DoD Civilians, DoD Civilians, Contractors: Daily rates are slightly higher, around $40, with weekly rates at approximately $270. This still provides excellent value compared to commercial alternatives.
- Dry Camp & Tent Camping: For those who opt for sites without hookups (when available), the nightly rate is around $10. It's important to note that tent campers are generally not allowed to bring pets.
- Dump Station Access: While the dump station is free for registered campers, non-registered individuals can use it for a small fee of $4.
- Lower Rate for Shared Utilities: In some instances, a lower rate may be available if guests share utilities with a neighbor (with their permission), offering a minor cost-saving option.
Beyond the competitive pricing, the "special offers" also include the intangible benefits of base access. Guests at Dover AFB Famcamp can take advantage of discounted tickets and tours for local attractions and amusement parks in the Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York areas through the Information, Tickets & Travel (ITT) Office on base. This offers additional savings and convenience for planning excursions during their stay.
Reservations are accepted for all 10 campsites up to 90 days in advance by calling Outdoor Recreation, which is crucial given the limited number of sites. Maximum stay limits apply (e.g., 14 days in May-September, 30 days in October-April), ensuring availability for various guests. These policies, combined with the low prices and comprehensive access to base amenities, are the primary "promotions" that make Dover AFB Famcamp an attractive option for military members and authorized users in Delaware.

Dover AFB Famcamp Reviews
Quaint little RV campsite on the edge of Dover & Dover AFB airfield. We traveled to the ends of the rainbow to get here (see photo). Very efficient, no frills area. Picnic table, grill, water electric & dump station provided. There is no wind block during storms & windy days. There is 1 washer ($1.50) & 1 dryer ($.25 for 5 min.) for 10 sites. There is 1 male & 1 female bathroom in the bathhouse, with 2 stalls, 1 locking shower & 2 sinks in each bathroom. No, benches or trash cans in the bathrooms. Showers, clean & nice. There is a huge playground across the street & plenty of entertainment nearby. The street between the site & the playground has a 25 mph speed limit. It is very common to see vehicles travel 40 - 50 mph (just eyeball calculation, not official speed).
Mar 06, 2025 · Jerry SzymczykWhat’s not to like?! Quiet, spacious, washers, bathrooms clean, near to base shopping, playground across the street for the kids and great walking path and open fields to walk your dog. Sure there may not be a pool or a very large laundry room - but for the price and peace of quiet we enjoyed we will definitely come back in the near future.
Oct 07, 2024 · Jewell FolsomTwo night stay. Price was right. Our site was a mix of grass and gravel. Picnic table and elevated charcoal grill. T-Mobile had 4 bars, no wifi. A small bath house (you need an access code for the bath house but not for the laundry. Bath house was small and dirty - there was a hand written note on the door that basically said the Base/MWR did not provide cleaning staff for the bath house and it was incumbent upon guest to clean after themselves. Fair enough, but there were no cleaning supplies anywhere. Not sure who serviced the bath house with toilet paper. No soap dispensers or air dryers/towels. The camp site is located very near a runway so if you are a light sleeper, this might not be the right camp site for you.
Oct 24, 2023 · CHAOSNCHECK TAlthough you must have access to Dover AFB to get to Famcamp, it is quiet and comfortable.... Didn't have any children with me, but there is a small children's park adjacent also! The Air Mobility Command Museum is nearby and we'll worth visiting!
Aug 20, 2021 · Frederick PackardNice inexpensive place to camp on Dover AFB, located on the South end of the runway. The tent sites have little shade and no power, but a nice pagoda. The bathroom and showers were clean and only a short walk away.Cool place to plane watch when camping. Not so cool when they land at 0300 in the morning.
