Double Spur Outfitters Introduce
For many Virginians, the call of the wild, whether it's the thrill of a successful hunt or the peaceful solitude of a fishing excursion, is an integral part of life in our beautiful state. Double Spur Outfitters, located in Star Tannery, Virginia, stands out as a premier destination for those seeking exceptional outdoor experiences. Unlike a traditional public campground, Double Spur Outfitters specializes in providing guided and semi-guided hunting trips, along with exclusive access to private water for trophy trout fishing. This focus means they offer a tailored, high-quality outdoor adventure for serious enthusiasts and those looking to enhance their skills in Virginia's stunning natural landscapes. It’s a place where expertise meets nature, promising memorable outings in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley.
Double Spur Outfitters is located at 2011 Star Tannery Rd, Star Tannery, VA 22654, USA. This address places it squarely in the scenic and wildlife-rich region of northwestern Virginia, nestled near the George Washington National Forest and within easy reach of the Shenandoah Valley. The location is ideal for outdoor activities, characterized by its rolling hills, dense forests, and pristine waterways.
Accessibility to Double Spur Outfitters is straightforward for Virginians. Star Tannery, while offering a remote feel, is not overly difficult to reach. It’s typically accessed via well-maintained state and local roads, providing a pleasant drive through Virginia's picturesque countryside. For those coming from Northern Virginia, it offers a convenient escape to wilderness. Similarly, from other parts of the state, major interstates like I-66 and I-81 provide excellent connections, leading directly into this prime outdoor region. The very nature of their operations, which involve access to vast tracts of private and National Forest land, means their location serves as a strategic base for reaching diverse hunting grounds and prime fishing spots. This blend of accessibility and immersion in nature makes it an appealing destination for locals seeking an authentic outdoor experience.
Double Spur Outfitters focuses on providing specialized outdoor experiences rather than general camping amenities. Their services are centered around guided adventures for hunting and fishing. While they do offer lodging, this is typically included as part of a hunting or fishing package, rather than being a standalone campground rental. Here's a breakdown of their primary services:
- Guided Hunting Trips: They offer guided and semi-guided hunts for various game, including bear, deer (whitetail), and turkey. These hunts often take place on both private land and licensed access to George Washington National Forest.
- Private Water Trout Fishing: Double Spur Outfitters provides exclusive access to four miles of private water on Cedar Creek, which is well-stocked with trout. They offer both full-day and half-day guided fly-fishing trips.
- Lodging: They offer various lodging options as part of their hunting and fishing packages. This includes cabins (such as the Brook Cabin, Rainbow Cabin, and Brown Cabin, some managed in conjunction with "The Bluffs at Cedar Creek") and a lodge. These accommodations are designed for hunters and anglers, providing comfortable, rustic stays with amenities like kitchens, heating, and sleeping quarters.
- Game Retrieval Assistance: For hunters, assistance with retrieving game from the woods and transporting it to a processor is often included in guided hunt packages.
- No Meals Provided (for semi-guided/self-guided hunts): While some trips might include snacks and beverages (e.g., half-day fishing), many hunting packages do not include meals, but cabins often have full kitchens.
- Trash Bins: For guests utilizing their lodging or specific fishing areas, trash bins are available for proper disposal.
- Dog-Friendly (with conditions): While the reviews indicate dogs are welcome in certain contexts (e.g., fishing trips), specific rules for hunting dogs or pets in lodging should be confirmed directly.
It is crucial to note that while "The Bluffs at Cedar Creek" offers traditional campsites (with electricity, water, picnic tables, fire rings, and a dump station) and shares the same address as Double Spur Outfitters, fishing reservations are specifically booked through Double Spur Outfitters, and camping must be booked through The Bluffs at Cedar Creek. This indicates a close partnership, but distinct booking processes for camping vs. guided fishing/hunting.
Double Spur Outfitters is distinguished by several key features and highlights that enhance the outdoor experience for its clients:
- Exclusive Private Trout Water: The four miles of private, well-stocked water on Cedar Creek is a significant highlight, offering an unparalleled trout fishing experience with a limit on the number of rods per day to ensure "alone time" for anglers. Reviewers consistently praise the "beautiful trout" and "well stocked" creek.
- Access to Extensive Hunting Grounds: With access to thousands of acres, including private land and licensed areas within the George Washington National Forest, Double Spur Outfitters provides diverse terrain for hunting bear, deer, and turkey.
- Experienced Guides: Reviewers highlight the "terrific host" Levi, indicating the presence of knowledgeable and welcoming guides who enhance the overall experience. Guides assist with tracking, retrieval, and ensuring a quality hunt.
- Well-Maintained Grounds: The "carefully maintained" grounds and "lovely surroundings" mentioned by reviewers contribute to a pleasant and accessible outdoor environment, particularly for fishing.
- Variety of Hunts: They offer different types of hunts (fully guided, semi-guided, self-guided) and for various species, catering to different preferences and skill levels.
- Comfortable Lodging Options: The availability of private cabins and a lodge with amenities like kitchens, heating, and comfortable sleeping quarters provides a convenient and enjoyable base for multi-day trips.
- Historical Context: Being located near significant natural features like the George Washington National Forest and the Shenandoah Valley, the area itself offers rich natural history and beauty.
- Year-Round Opportunities: While hunting seasons are specific, trout fishing can be enjoyed for much of the year (October-May), offering extended opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Given that Double Spur Outfitters provides specialized hunting and fishing trips, their "promotions or special offers" are typically structured around their rates for these guided services rather than general campground discounts.
- Guided Trip Rates: For instance, full-day guided fly-fishing trips are priced at $400 for one or two people, with incremental increases for additional participants. Half-day trips are $300 for one or two people.
- Group Discounts (Inquire Directly): The website mentions that for groups larger than 6 for trout fishing, or for booking the entire stream, interested parties should call to discuss possible arrangements, implying potential group discounts or customized packages. For guided fly fishing, if you have a "special request, or a question about a possible group discount," you are advised to call Greg at (703) 399-4009.
- Hunting Packages: Hunting rates vary significantly based on species, duration, and level of guidance (self-guided deer hunts starting around $950 for 3 days, fully guided bear hunts at $4,200, etc.). These packages inherently offer a comprehensive service for the stated price.
- Cancellation/Refund Policy: It's important to note their policy, which offers a 100% refund for cancellations more than 90 days out, and the option to change dates between 89 and 6 days before the trip (no monetary refund). Less than 5 days results in no refund or rescheduling. Deposits are good for one calendar year.
It is always recommended to contact Double Spur Outfitters directly to discuss current rates, package details, and any potential custom arrangements or seasonal offers that might be available for your specific outdoor adventure.

Double Spur Outfitters Reviews
Turkey hunting was hard and fewer birds than expected. Beautiful place and some nice folks plus trout fishing available.
Apr 16, 2025 · William MoungerWhat a great day fishing at Double Spur! The creek and pond were well stocked with beautiful trout. The grounds are carefully maintained, leading to easy access to the water and lovely surroundings. The pavilion provides a restful spot for a picnic. Port-a-potties are available. Dogs are welcome. The limit of 6 rods/day on the creek ensure Alone Time if you're looking for it, but my husband and I enjoyed chatting with other anglers who were taking breaks. Levi was a terrific host. It was a GREAT day - can't wait to go back!
Mar 16, 2024 · Laurie GossIncredible experience. I learned so much about trout fishing in this beautiful environment. I stayed in the most peaceful spot in a hammock by the creek. My friends had cabins and there are spots for RVs as well. For camping, fishing, or guided hunting (safely far away from campers) there is no better place.
