Double Springs Campground Introduce
For residents of Arizona, a summer escape to the high country is a time-honored tradition. Double Springs Campground, nestled in the serene Ponderosa pine and Gambel oak forest near Mormon Lake, offers an ideal retreat from the desert heat. This is an "old fashion" campground, originally built in the 1930s, and it retains a charming, nostalgic feel that sets it apart from more modern, bustling sites. The campground is a peaceful sanctuary where the fresh air and quiet rustling of leaves replace the noise of city life. With only 15 single-unit sites, it maintains a cozy, intimate atmosphere, making it perfect for those who truly want to unplug and reconnect with nature. It’s a place where you can relax, take in the beautiful surroundings, and enjoy a genuine camping experience.
As one visitor noted, it's a "lovely, quiet campground to escape the heat." The high elevation provides a welcome respite, making it a comfortable place to camp even in the warmer months. The campground is well-regarded for its cleanliness and the dedication of its hosts, with one camper remarking on the "cleanest restrooms I have ever seen at a campsite!" This attention to detail ensures a pleasant and stress-free stay. Double Springs also has a unique natural feature that gives it its name—a spring that surfaces just above the camp, attracting a variety of wildlife. This makes the campground a fantastic spot for wildlife watching and birding, with common sightings of elk, mule deer, hawks, and even the occasional bald eagle. It's an excellent destination for families with children, as the natural environment provides a safe and engaging classroom for learning about local flora and fauna.
Double Springs Campground is conveniently located near the village of Mormon Lake, just a short drive from Flagstaff. From the Phoenix area, the drive is approximately two and a half to three hours, taking you north on I-17 and then east on I-40 to Flagstaff, and finally south on Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road) to Mormon Lake Road. The journey itself is a scenic one, providing a beautiful transition from the arid desert to the cool, mountainous landscape of the Coconino National Forest. The campground's address is 4788 Mormon Lake Rd, Mormon Lake, AZ 86038, USA. While the final approach to the campground is on a gravel forest road, it is generally well-maintained and accessible for most vehicles, including RVs up to 35 feet in length. The proximity to the Mormon Lake area means that while you feel secluded, you are never far from additional amenities and services in the village, which can be a relief for those who need a break from campfire cooking.

June 19 · Tammy SpitzerCleanest restrooms I have ever seen at a campsite! AZT trailhead just feet away from the site!
June 02 · Sonoran CleaningI gave this 5 stars... I don't think any campsite is perfect but this checked all the boxes off. we did 2 nights early June 2024, Phoenix was 100+ degrees and campsite was low 80's day and 50 something at night. There is convenient water and outhouses that were always very clean.there is only 15 sites so it's quiet and cozy. Some sites are close together and others have some distance between. If you are going with 2 families get camp site 2 and 3 because theyre a short stone throw away. Not all campsites had the charcoal grill seen in my video attached.I will go back to this again.there is also Mormon lake town that is a 2 minute drive from the site and they have a small restaurant, fuel, and a small store.
June 11 · George PauliThis place has the cleanest bathrooms of all time. Cleaner than your home. Seems bathrooms are well sealed and epoxied cleanly. Lots of green trees. Weather is great. Lots of pollen for spring time though. .. but pathways were clean, camp goat came by daily and checked in on everything every day. Sites 14 and 15 are out of the way and are secluded enough to be really nice and calming. Plenty of bird and animals to hear out there
June 03 · Craig SimpsonGreat location for relaxing and even taking a little trip to Flagstaff. Bathrooms were pretty clean and the camp sites were nice, spacious, and mostly spaced apart. Sites 2 & 3 are together and make a nice section for 2 families.
