Deer Group Campground is nestled at 40301 2N08, Angelus Oaks, CA 92305, USA, within the breathtaking San Bernardino National Forest. This location places it in a prime position for Southern Californians looking for a mountain getaway that’s accessible yet feels wonderfully remote. Angelus Oaks itself is a charming mountain community, providing a small hub for essential supplies before you head deeper into the forest.
Accessibility to Deer Group Campground is an important detail for planning your trip, and it’s a point that previous visitors consistently highlight. The ascent to the camp involves navigating a dirt road that is described as "difficult" and "treacherous." This unpaved access road is approximately 13 to 20 minutes long from the main paved road and is quite bumpy. Therefore, a high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended, and for some, it might even be considered a necessity. While a 4x4 vehicle might not be strictly required, having good ground clearance will undoubtedly make the journey significantly more comfortable and prevent potential issues with the terrain.
Despite the challenging road, visitors consistently agree that the journey is "worth it." The effort required to reach the campground contributes to its secluded feel, ensuring a more private and tranquil experience once you arrive. The remote nature also means you're truly immersed in the forest, away from excessive light and noise pollution, which directly contributes to one of the campground's most celebrated features: the incredible stargazing.
Before heading out, it's always a good idea to check local road conditions, especially if there has been recent rain or snow, as these can further impact the dirt road's navigability. Planning your arrival during daylight hours is also advisable to better manage the drive. The sense of adventure starts even before you set up camp, making the drive to Deer Group Campground an integral part of the overall experience.

Deer Group Campground Reviews
The ascent to the camp takes 13 minutes and it is a difficult dirt road, but it is worth it, it is beautiful and the stars are impressive. I would go back again, I recommend it 100%
Jul 26, 2023 · Angelica MelendezAn awesome group campsite. Very secluded and can fit up to 40, we had about 15 people and there was plenty of space. The road into the campsite is a bit treacherous and def needs a high clearance car as it is quite bumpy. Takes about 20mins from the main road. Definitely recommend this site to groups.
Aug 16, 2021 · Lan TruongNice large site. Adjacent to trail, so some foot traffic for outhouse shared use. Lot's of room to set up tents. Only 3 bear boxes for food storage.
