Hello, fellow Hoosiers and outdoor adventurers! If you’re searching for a natural escape that combines serene lake views with diverse recreational opportunities, look no further than Deam Lake Family Campground. Nestled in the picturesque Deam Lake State Recreation Area in Borden, Indiana, this campground offers a classic camping experience perfect for families, couples, and individuals looking to connect with nature, enjoy watersports, or hit the trails.
Deam Lake Family Campground provides a gateway to a variety of outdoor activities, set amidst a beautiful, forested landscape. While some elements might call for a bit of understanding or a DIY approach, the overall appeal lies in its natural setting and the potential for a truly memorable outdoor adventure. In this article, we’ll dive into the specifics of this Indiana State Recreation Area campground, covering its location, accessibility, the services and features it provides, and why it remains a popular choice for locals seeking a refreshing break from the everyday.
Deam Lake Family Campground is located within the Deam Lake State Recreation Area at 1217 Deam Lake Rd, Borden, IN 47106, USA. This location places it in southern Indiana, easily accessible for residents of Indianapolis, Louisville (Kentucky), and other surrounding communities. The campground is part of a larger recreation area centered around the 194-acre Deam Lake, named in honor of Charles Deam, Indiana's first state forester.
Accessibility to Deam Lake Family Campground is generally straightforward. The park is accessed via well-maintained roads, making it suitable for all types of vehicles, from cars pulling trailers to RVs. Upon arrival, visitors will typically encounter an entrance booth where a daily vehicle entrance fee is collected (or an annual pass can be used). This fee is separate from the camping fee. The campground itself offers a mix of site types, with various levels of tree cover and sun exposure. Some sites are completely exposed with no tree cover, which can be hot during sunny periods, while others offer more shade. It’s advisable to check site details when booking if shade is a priority.
While the general access is good, some internal roads and paths are noted to be gravel, and some sites may be sloped, requiring campers to level their RVs. Given its natural setting, guests should be aware of the potential for ambient sounds, such as those from a nearby shooting range, which some past visitors have noted. Despite these minor considerations, the proximity to Borden, and its relative ease of access from larger population centers, makes Deam Lake a convenient option for a quick getaway into nature.
Services Offered:
- Electric Campsites: Offers 113 electric campsites in the family campground section, providing power hookups.
- Water Spigots: Water is available throughout the park via spigots, though not directly at every campsite. Campers can use these to fill up their tanks.
- Dump Station: A dump station is available at the entrance of the campground for RV waste disposal.
- Modern Restrooms and Showers: Deam Lake SRA provides modern restroom and shower facilities. However, visitors should note that some comfort stations might be a bit far from certain sites and may be in need of repairs or updates. One comfort station (serving Section E) has been noted as temporarily closed for foundational repairs.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring for outdoor cooking and gathering.
- Horseman's Campground: A separate section with 63 electric campsites and hitching posts, along with 36 electric campsites that come with a horse stall, serving equestrian campers.
- Rent-a-Camp Cabins: 19 cabins are available seasonally (April-October), offering a more comfortable alternative to tent camping, complete with heating/cooling units, fans, and electrical outlets (no linens/mattresses provided).

- Extensive Trail System: Home to four hiking trails, and serves as the southern trailhead for the 80-mile Knobstone Trail, Indiana's longest hiking trail, as well as multi-purpose trails for horse riding and mountain biking.
- Family-Friendly Activities: Offers a swimming beach, playground (though one restroom near it has been noted for needing repairs), and nature programs at the Forest Education Center.
- Diverse Camping Options: Caters to various camping styles, from electric RV/tent sites to equestrian sites and cabins.
- Natural Surroundings: Provides a peaceful natural setting with plenty of trees (though some sites are exposed) and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
- Friendly Staff: Positive feedback notes pleasant interactions with staff, particularly at the front entrance booth.
- Managed by Indiana DNR: As a state recreation area, it benefits from state-level management, focusing on conservation and public access.
- Fishing Opportunities: The lake is stocked with various fish, including bluegill, largemouth bass, and catfish, making it a popular spot for anglers.
It is important for prospective visitors to be aware of some of the challenges noted in recent reviews. The condition of some bathroom facilities has been raised as a concern, with reports of them being in need of work or closed for repairs. Additionally, some campers have experienced noise from nearby activities, such as mowing or a shooting range, which might affect the "restful or relaxing" aspect for some. The presence of an "old trailer with a tarp" has also been mentioned as an unsightly element. Site exposure varies greatly, so those seeking shade should inquire specifically about shaded sites. Despite these points, the core appeal of Deam Lake lies in its natural beauty, access to the lake, and diverse recreational offerings, which for many, outweigh the minor inconveniences. The property is continually managed and subject to improvements, as is common with state park facilities.

Deam Lake Family Campground Reviews
I really like this campground!!However they still haven't fixed the bathroom next to the playground yet.🙄 If there was a bad storm you would not be able to take shelter in there. The only other thing is that there is an old trailer with a tarp covering the roof that looks like it has been parked there for years. It looks really trashy and should be cleaned up.
Apr 13, 2025 · Dennis KarlThey were mowing super short grass all morning, or possibly just blowing leaves around on multiple ride on mowers, i counted 3. Weird. Not restful or relaxing at all. Showers were a bit cramped but warm enough unless you like hot water, my bf said it was cold to him. We were in D36 which is completely exposed, no tree cover at all. I felt like I was camping in a parking lot, so it would be too hot when the sun is shining. I believe there is a shooting range nearby. Heard guns Until late, dog was not pleased. Two stars only because man at front entrance booth was pleasant, won't be back
Sep 23, 2024 · M MWonderful place to camp with family. All sites have electric and a paved parking spot for campers. Sites also have spots for tents. Movable fire rings and picnic tables at each site as well. Small playground by the campground entrance for the kids. Hot showers in the full bathroom. Multiple trails begin around the camp ground. Always see critters on our hikes here.

Jul 08, 2019 · Bobbie Jo WhitenerReally enjoyed camping here, but was very disappointed this morning to see so much litter left behind by groups! I don’t understand who people think is going to pick up after them? Beautiful parks like this deserve to be respected and appreciated, clean up after yourselves so everyone can enjoy this public space!
