For local Marylanders planning a day hike or a shorter overnight backpacking trip along the AT, Dahlgren Backpacker Campground offers an accessible and well-equipped starting or ending point, eliminating the need to search for dispersed camping or less reliable options. Dahlgren Backpacker Campground focuses on providing essential and highly valued services specifically tailored for hikers and backpackers, ensuring a comfortable and practical stay:
- Tent and Hammock Sites: The campground offers designated, fairly level spots suitable for pitching tents. Additionally, there are specific areas or poles designed for hammock hanging, catering to the preferences of different backpackers.
- Water Availability: Potable water is available on-site, a critical resource for hikers who need to refill water bottles and prepare meals.
- Utility Sink: A utility sink is provided, which is invaluable for washing dishes, cooking gear, or even personal items after a day on the trail. This helps maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
- Shower House with Hot Water: This is arguably the most celebrated feature. A shower house offering hot water is a significant luxury for hikers who have been on the trail for days, providing much-needed relief and rejuvenation. It is generally noted as clean and well-cared for when operational.
- Bear Hang Poles: To promote safe food storage and protect against wildlife, several poles are available for bear hangs, allowing campers to securely store their food away from animals.
- Porta Potties: Well-maintained porta potties are available, providing basic restroom facilities.
- Trash Disposal: During the active season, trash cans are typically available for waste disposal, though it's important to note that during winter shutdowns or off-peak times, these may not be present, requiring hikers to pack out their trash.
- No Electric Hookups: Consistent with a backpacker campground, electric hookups for RVs or personal devices are not provided. This maintains the rustic and low-impact nature of the site.
- No Wi-Fi: To encourage disconnection and align with the outdoor experience, Wi-Fi is not available at the campground.
Dahlgren Backpacker Campground’s key features and highlights are precisely what make it an indispensable stop for hikers, especially those tackling the Appalachian Trail:

- Community Vibe: As a popular stop for hikers, the campground often fosters a strong sense of community among those on the trail, providing opportunities to share stories and tips.

Given its nature as a backpacker campground, Dahlgren Backpacker Campground typically operates on a straightforward, low-cost or donation-based system, rather than offering complex promotions or discounts. Pricing is usually per person, per night, and designed to be affordable for hikers on a budget. It's always best to check directly with the official sources associated with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy or local park services (as these campgrounds are often maintained or supported by such entities) for the most current fee structure. During the off-season or winter shutdown, some services like hot showers may be unavailable, which could implicitly affect the "value" for some hikers, but the basic camping facilities often remain accessible. As there are no elaborate promotional campaigns typical of commercial campgrounds, the "offer" is consistently the reliable provision of essential, clean, and hiker-friendly amenities at a minimal cost.

Dahlgren Backpacker Campground Reviews
Stopped here for the night on our section hike of the Appalachian trail. It's a really nice campsite, places for tents and to hang hammocks. Several poles for the bear hang. Water is available, there is a utility sink. Best of all, there is a shower house with HOT water.. which was a total luxury after several slimy 100+ degree days of hiking. Everything looked clean and well cared for.
Jul 24, 2024 · Olympia2nd weekend in April, and still on winter shutdown. No trash cans, no showers, no electric. Every tent pad and hammock area being used. Porta potty good to go. Pizza delivery at main road. Dozens of hikers checked it out, and pushed through.
Apr 18, 2025 · Tom ShannonPossibly the best free campground on the AT. There is an expansive grassy area with a number of tent pads, but you could just as easily set up your tent on the grass. There are restrooms, shower, outside sink, electrical outlets in the restrooms, a pole to hang your food bag, and pizza delivery available at the nearby parking lot.
Jan 11, 2025 · Michael WarrenSpent the night while on a hiking trip. Plenty of space for tents. Had pizza delivered to us! The main thing I was impressed by was the BATH HOUSE. So super clean, great showers. Very very nice!
Sep 24, 2023 · Jaime DymondAwesome little spot! Plenty of space for camping and 5 fire pits. Restrooms were stocked and cleaned, also have showers and clean water just a short walk from the building.
