Cypress Knee Camp Site

Campground ★3.0

Camp Trevor Rees - Jones, Athens, TX 75751, USA

3.0
Excellent location camp site at TRJ, however, worst at TRJ of there is rain! Latrean is out of order in Oct 2023 and Ranger said there was I quick plans to fix as it was a huge repair, so check ahead and expect no close latrean bathroom.Near the full bathrooms and two pavilions, flag pool, etc.Access to bathrooms and bridge on both sides for fishing make it great. However, if it rains, this site turns into a mud pit. The site is mostly sand/clay and turns into a squishy quicksand like material. It is horribly messy and vehicles get stuck easily! Avoid if raining at all! See pictures I have included from Oct 2023!Also note the latrean is out of order entirely here! - Brian Fox

Cypress Knee Camp Site Introduce

For us Texans, finding the perfect camping spot is about more than just a place to pitch a tent. It’s about the experience—the combination of beautiful landscapes, engaging activities, and that special sense of peace that comes from being away from the urban sprawl. Cypress Knee Camp Site, located within the expansive Camp Trevor Rees-Jones in Athens, offers a distinct kind of outdoor adventure, particularly for those familiar with the Scouting tradition. This site is part of a larger, well-established camp system, providing a unique blend of rustic charm and organized amenities. It's an ideal location for families and groups who want to enjoy the simplicity of nature while having access to a range of activities.

Cypress Knee is a site that invites you to truly disconnect and get back to the basics of camping. It's a place where the sounds of the Texas wilderness replace the noise of the city and the vast East Texas sky is your ceiling. While it’s known for its authentic, no-frills feel, it's also located near a variety of camp facilities, giving it a convenient edge. The campsite itself is nestled in a setting that provides a classic camping atmosphere, with natural features and a sense of remoteness despite its proximity to the main camp area. For locals who have an appreciation for the outdoors, Cypress Knee offers a great opportunity for a weekend getaway, a chance to enjoy hiking trails and the tranquil setting of the camp's lakes.

One of the key aspects of Cypress Knee is that it’s part of a property owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America. This means it is designed with a focus on activities and a structured, safe environment, making it an excellent choice for families with children. The availability of hiking trails provides an easy way to explore the surrounding woods, and the access to fishing spots makes it a great place to introduce young anglers to the sport. The site's location within a larger camp means you are not truly isolated, but it still feels like a genuine outdoor experience. It's a place where the simple joys of a campfire, a good meal, and the great outdoors can be enjoyed by everyone.

It is important to note that, as with any natural setting, conditions can vary. As some visitors have pointed out, the site's sandy/clay soil can become a challenge after heavy rain, turning into a muddy area. This is a crucial piece of local knowledge and something that anyone planning a trip should consider. A little bit of foresight and preparation, such as checking the weather forecast before you go, can ensure that your experience is a great one, regardless of the conditions. This is the nature of true camping—it asks you to be adaptable and prepared for whatever nature throws your way.
