Crystal Lake Camp Grounds

State Rte 39, Azusa, CA 91702, USA

4.0
This is the best campground in the first-come, first-served category where we spent two nights. Firewood is available for $25 a lot. Bears are active at night; we heard bear horns blown both nights and one camper even shared a story about a bear taking an ice chest from a truck. The campground offers pit/vault toilets, though they aren't very clean. Water is available, and there's a campground store for food and camping supplies. We enjoyed our stay. Crystal Lake is approximately one mile away by car, followed by a 10-minute hike. - Life2Explore

Crystal Lake Camp Grounds provides a range of essential services designed to support a comfortable and engaging camping experience, balancing convenience with the rustic charm of a national forest campground. These services cater to the basic needs of campers while encouraging immersion in the natural environment:

  • Campsites: The campground features 191 campsites that can accommodate tents, trailers, and small RVs. Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire pit with a ring, perfect for enjoying campfires (subject to fire restrictions). These are available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning early arrival is crucial.
  • Restroom Facilities: Pit/vault toilets are provided throughout the campground. While user reviews indicate they may not always be perfectly clean, they offer a necessary amenity for campers.
  • Water Availability: Drinking water is available on-site, a vital convenience for all campers. It's often piped in from sources like Soldier Creek, ensuring potable water access.
  • Campground Store/Cafe: The Crystal Lake Cafe and Trading Post is conveniently located next to the campground. This valuable resource allows campers to purchase food, firewood ($25 per bundle as of recent notes), and other essential camping supplies, reducing the need to leave the area for forgotten items.
  • Cabin Rentals: For those seeking a slightly more structured stay, there are also a few cabins available for rent. Interested parties should contact "Adam" as per a user review for rental inquiries.
  • Amphitheater: An open-air amphitheater is a notable feature, often used for campfire programs, lectures by U.S. Forest Service volunteers, and other gatherings, adding a communal aspect to the camping experience.
  • Dump Station: A dump station is available for RVs, although individual sites generally do not offer electrical hook-ups.

Crystal Lake Camp Grounds boasts a rich array of features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for Californians seeking outdoor adventure and relaxation. Its natural setting and available amenities contribute to a memorable camping experience:

  • Proximity to Crystal Lake: A significant highlight is the campground’s closeness to Crystal Lake, approximately one mile away. This beautiful lake, situated at 5,700 feet elevation, offers opportunities for fishing (when stocked, typically with rainbow trout), non-motorized boating (canoeing, kayaking), and enjoying the serene water. There's also a paved road and a gentle foot trail connecting the campground to the lake.
  • Extensive Trail Network: The surrounding Angeles National Forest is crisscrossed with numerous hiking and nature trails. With over 500 miles of trails in the broader forest, hikers of all experience levels can find paths to explore, from challenging ascents to more leisurely walks. Specific trails mentioned in the wider Crystal Lake Recreation Area include those leading to spectacular peaks like Mt. Islip and Windy Gap, and the famous Devil's Canyon.
  • Active Bear Country: While a necessity for responsible camping, the active bear population (bears are frequently searching for food) is a notable feature that enhances the wilderness feel. Campers must be diligent about storing food securely (e.g., in a truck or hard-sided cooler) to prevent encounters. Hearing bear horns blown at night adds to the authentic mountain experience.
  • First-Come, First-Served Advantage: For spontaneous adventurers, the first-come, first-served policy means you don't always need to plan months in advance, though arriving early for popular weekends is essential.
  • Beautiful Mountain Setting: Situated amidst the majestic San Gabriel Mountains, the campground offers clean mountain air, picturesque views, and a refreshing escape from urban environments.
  • Stargazing: Away from city light pollution, the night skies at Crystal Lake Camp Grounds can offer excellent opportunities for stargazing.
  • Community Vibe: The presence of a camp store and amphitheater, along with a general atmosphere of fellow campers, fosters a sense of community.
