Coulter Group Campground

Angeles Crest Hwy, Palmdale, CA 93550, USA

4.0
This is a really cool campground. We went opening day (the season begins April 1st) and it was still REALLY cold. It got to below freezing and we had rain/snow the first day. Wind was also strong at night but during the day the weather was really not bad. Amazing views if you walk up the hill across from the campsite overlooking the mountains. There is a bathroom, fire pit , and plenty of room for large groups. No water or hookups and no cell reception. You have to make sure to remember to call to get the gate code before driving up during business hours. Lots of areas to explore and rocks to climb on. We had a blast, I’m surprised this campground is not more popular. - Tawny Patrick - Realtor

Coulter Group Campground Introduce

For Californians organizing group outdoor adventures, whether it’s for a family reunion, a youth group outing, or a gathering of friends, "Coulter Group Campground" stands out as an exceptional option within the majestic Angeles National Forest. Located directly off Angeles Crest Highway near Palmdale, CA 93550, this campground is specifically designed to accommodate larger parties, offering ample space and essential amenities that make group camping feasible and enjoyable in a wilderness setting. It provides a unique blend of rugged beauty and practical facilities, appealing to those who desire a communal outdoor experience away from the bustling city.

Reviews from actual campers highlight what makes Coulter truly special. It's described as a "really cool campground" with "plenty of room for large groups." Visitors praise its "amazing views if you walk up the hill across from the campsite overlooking the mountains," and the presence of a "bathroom with a toilet" and "bear bins for the trash." The availability of "pump water" further enhances its suitability for groups. While it offers a wild feel, it comes with key conveniences that simplify logistics for multiple families or individuals.

It’s important to note its seasonal operation, typically beginning April 1st, and the potential for cold, windy, or even snowy conditions early in the season, as experienced by reviewers who visited "opening day." The absence of cell reception and hookups emphasizes its rustic nature, encouraging a true disconnect. However, its attributes for bouldering and assembly areas make it a dynamic site for various group activities. This introduction aims to provide Californians with a clear overview of Coulter Group Campground's offerings, setting the stage for a memorable group adventure in their local National Forest.

Coulter Group Campground is strategically positioned along the Angeles Crest Highway within the Angeles National Forest, near Palmdale, CA 93550, USA. This location offers a convenient high-mountain escape for Californians, particularly those residing in the sprawling Southern California metropolitan areas. While the 93550 zip code points to Palmdale, the campground itself is nestled in the cooler, higher elevations of the San Gabriel Mountains, providing a distinct change of climate and scenery from the valley floors.

Accessibility to Coulter Group Campground is primarily by vehicle via the Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2). This scenic highway provides direct access, making it a relatively easy drive for groups bringing multiple vehicles and significant gear. However, access is controlled, as noted by reviewers: "You have to make sure to remember to call to get the gate code before driving up during business hours." This managed access ensures a more private and secure experience for reserved groups.

The campground is typically accessible through its adjacent counterpart, Little Pines Campground, or directly from the highway, which also suggests its convenience. While its proximity to the road means some daytime noise from "cars and motorcycles," this trade-off often proves worthwhile for the ease of access it provides. It's crucial for Californians planning a visit to confirm the operational season, as it "isn't year-round," and to check for any road closures on Angeles Crest Highway, especially during winter months when snow and ice can impact travel, or during fire season when restrictions or closures are common in the Angeles National Forest. This direct car access and relatively convenient mountain location make Coulter a prime choice for group outings in the region.

  • Pump Water: Access to "pump water" is a significant amenity, offering a reliable (though typically non-potable, requiring treatment) water source for cooking, cleaning, and general use.
  • Fire Pits/Rings: Each site includes a "fire pit," allowing for campfires and outdoor cooking when fire restrictions permit and with a valid California Campfire Permit.
