Beautiful location, its great camping among so many nice trees and there is always shade around camp. This campsite is very very close to the busy and very loud road and a loud roaring river right across it which made me nervous with young children and was quite noisy at night. We have camped in many campsites in this area and this year the bathrooms were not as clean as the swinging bridge campsite nearby has been most years. Toilet paper was often running low and the smell was worse than normal. Some positive things about the campsite is that it is a great middle location between river sections to raft! I however didnt like the the place to pull in the campground was around a bend in the road that makes it difficult to see cars coming quickly. The water pumps in camp are very convenient! - Kendra Monson

Location and Accessibility

Cold Springs Campground is located on Forest Rd 023B, Cascade, ID 83611, USA, within the expansive Boise National Forest. This puts it in a prime position along Idaho's State Highway 55, next to the North Fork of the Payette River. It's approximately 41.5 miles north of Boise, making it a relatively accessible destination for many Idaho locals. To reach it from Boise, you'd typically take State Highway 55 north to Banks (about 35 miles), and then continue north on Highway 55 for another 6.5 miles until you spot the campground on the west side of the highway. Signs are usually present to guide you.

The elevation of the campground is around 3,878 feet. While its location offers a "Beautiful location," and provides "great camping among so many nice trees" with "always shade around camp," it's important to note its proximity to the main road. As one reviewer mentioned, this campsite is "very very close to the busy and very loud road and a loud roaring river right across it." This can result in "quite noisy at night" conditions. Another crucial accessibility point to be aware of is the "place to pull in the campground was around a bend in the road that makes it difficult to see cars coming quickly." This means exercising extra caution when entering and exiting the campground. Despite these considerations, its direct proximity to a major highway makes it generally accessible for most vehicles, including RVs, though some units can only accommodate a 25-foot recreational vehicle. It is generally open from mid-May to the end of September.

Services Offered

  • Campsites:

Cold Springs Campground features "33 campsites," including several single and double family sites. Additionally, there are "five sites situated as a group area," each equipped with a "picnic table and campfire ring." This makes it suitable for both individual families and larger gatherings. Some sources indicate the group sites can accommodate "up to 50" maximum guests, making them excellent for reunions or larger group outings.

  • Restroom Facilities:

The campground provides "vault toilets" (also referred to as "restrooms"). While these are standard for Forest Service campgrounds, a recent review noted that "the bathrooms were not as clean as the swinging bridge campsite nearby has been most years. Toilet paper was often running low and the smell was worse than normal." However, the US Forest Service does manage the campground, and often strives for cleanliness, though conditions can vary based on usage.

  • Potable Water:

A significant convenience for campers is the availability of "drinking water using hand pump" facilities. Reviewers confirm that "The water pumps in camp are very convenient!", which is a welcome amenity that reduces the need to haul large quantities of water.

  • Trash Collection:

Trash collection services are typically provided at developed Forest Service campgrounds like Cold Springs, aiding in maintaining a clean and respectful environment.

  • No Electric Hookups:

As a developed Forest Service campground, Cold Springs generally does not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual campsites. Campers should be prepared for a primitive experience in terms of utilities.
