Campground, Hiking area ★3.0

Forest 525 Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336, USA

3.0
I should note that I am not local to AZ and this was my first time here. This road connects you to 5 different campsites or as other reviewers have described - parking lots. I setup at the Nolan camp. I am super grateful I set up earlier in the day and got a magnificent location because at night, tons and tons of vans were arriving late and circling looking for space. I had an amazing view from my car that I was camping in. I did have to take a little stroll to the nearest porta-potty. Not very clean but I’ve been in worse. The campsite wasn’t completely quiet at night which doesn’t bother me personally but maybe to some others it does. I know this new dispersed camping thing for Sedona is new and quite challenging from what it sounds like but I was able to work with it just fine and had an amazing time with breathtaking views. No campfires allowed. Leave no trace and be respectful. I saw people had dogs and cats on leashes tied up in their area. I think if you’re a van lifer, you just need to be considerate about the generator noise. All in all this was my favorite dispersed camping spot in Sedona. - K

Nestled within the spectacular scenery of the Coconino National Forest, the Dispersed Camping Area at Forest Road 9559 offers a distinct and accessible way to experience the beauty of Sedona. This area provides a fantastic opportunity for both seasoned campers and those new to the great outdoors to find a spot to park their RV or pitch a tent, all while being surrounded by iconic red rock formations. While the concept of "dispersed camping" here might differ from the traditional idea of finding a remote, private spot, it's an excellent solution for those seeking a convenient and budget-friendly base camp. The area is set up in a way that provides designated spots along the forest road, functioning somewhat like a series of interconnected parking areas or campsites. This structure ensures that campers have a clear place to set up, which helps in managing the flow of visitors, especially during busy times. With its easy access from Sedona, it’s a great starting point for exploring the surrounding trails and natural wonders. It's important to come prepared for a more communal feel, especially on weekends, and to be mindful of your neighbors. This spot is a testament to the fact that you don't always need a designated, fee-based campground to enjoy the beauty of the Arizona wilderness.

The Coconino National Forest Dispersed Camping Area at FR 9559 is located at Forest 525 Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336, USA. Its prime location places you right in the heart of Sedona's stunning red rock country. Accessibility is one of its major advantages, as it’s a well-known spot that is relatively easy to find, although some users have noted that GPS navigation can sometimes lead you past the main camping areas. It is advisable to look for the road itself rather than relying on a specific pin. Once on FR 9559, you will find multiple sections where vehicles can pull off and set up camp. This makes it easily reachable for a variety of vehicles, including larger RVs and vans. The area serves as a gateway to multiple hiking trails, offering a perfect blend of convenience and outdoor adventure. The road connects to several individual campsites, providing a number of options for where to settle in. Given its popularity, it’s often best to arrive earlier in the day to secure a spot, especially if you're looking for a location with a more spectacular view. While it’s not a remote, off-the-grid location, its proximity to Sedona and its accessible nature make it a highly desirable choice for many.

The accessibility of this site, being so close to Sedona, means you are just a short drive away from a variety of amenities, from grocery stores to restaurants, making it easy to resupply. However, the camping area itself is a more rustic experience. The road is unpaved and can be rough in some spots, so a vehicle with decent clearance is a good idea. The area is known for its beautiful views, but it's important to remember that it is a dispersed camping area, so you should be prepared to be self-sufficient. There are no hookups for water or electricity, and you will need to pack out everything you pack in. The beauty of this location lies in its simplicity and the raw, unfiltered experience of camping within a national forest.
