We stayed here for a week in September 2021. We enjoyed our stay here in our large fifth wheel (over 45 ft). Our site did not have water or sewer hookups, 50A electric only, but it did work fairly well, though I noticed the voltage drop to around 115V a few times. It's a bit tight for big rigs like ours, and rounding out corners and curves would definitely help. The upper Juniper loop restroom / shower was closed as well. They said to be back by 10pm when the gate closes, so that was a bit concerning, though we never stayed out that late to verify that it was closed at that time. Also, signage at the entrance would be helpful to prevent people from driving into the day use area when they are trying to reach the campground. Do keep in mind that there are very few services available near this location. There is a minimart with fuel and some basic groceries, and a laundromat, and that's about it unless you drive to Santa Fe or Albuquerque. - David Bottomley

Cochiti Rec Area, Juni Loop Introduce

For New Mexicans seeking a refreshing escape into the high desert landscape, Cochiti Recreation Area, particularly its Juniper Loop, offers a distinctive camping experience at Cochiti Lake. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this campground provides a comfortable and scenic base from which to explore the unique beauty of central New Mexico. While it boasts a serene environment and access to numerous outdoor activities, it’s also a place where campers can appreciate the rugged beauty of the region.

Cochiti Lake itself is a significant feature, known as a "no-wake" lake, making it ideal for paddle sports, sailing, and tranquil fishing. The Juniper Loop, perched on top of the mesa, offers campers a elevated perspective of the surrounding pinon and juniper-studded landscape. While perhaps not offering direct lake views from every site, its position provides a sense of openness and allows for breathtaking New Mexico sunrises and sunsets. It's a popular choice for those with larger RVs, though as some visitors note, navigating the loops can be a bit tight for very big rigs, and careful maneuvering is recommended.

Customer feedback consistently highlights the overall positive experience at Cochiti Recreation Area. One reviewer, staying for a week in a "large fifth wheel (over 45 ft)," noted the "50A electric only" hookups in their Juniper Loop site worked "fairly well," though they observed occasional voltage drops. This camper also appreciated the well-maintained facilities, even though the "upper Juniper loop restroom / shower was closed." They pointed out practical concerns such as the lack of clear signage at the entrance, which could lead visitors into the day-use area mistakenly, and the limited services available nearby, suggesting that visitors should plan to be self-sufficient or prepared for a drive to Santa Fe or Albuquerque for extensive supplies. Another review mentions, "Juniper loop is on top of the mesa, furthest from the lake and the shelters are non existent, the water spigots are a long distance from the campsites. Nice level and paved. Maps is not right on this. The directions take you to a locked gate but drive around a little and you can find the way in." These insights are valuable for local users planning their trip, underscoring the need for preparedness and an understanding of the campground's layout and amenities. Despite these minor challenges, Cochiti Rec Area, Juniper Loop, offers a truly authentic New Mexico outdoor adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Cochiti Rec Area, Juniper Loop, is precisely located at Cochiti Lake Rd, Cochiti Lake, NM 87083, USA. This places it within the boundaries of the Pueblo de Cochiti Indian Reservation, situated between the major New Mexico cities of Albuquerque to the south and Santa Fe to the north.

Access to Cochiti Lake and its recreation areas is generally via State Route 22, off Interstate 25. While the main roads leading to the area are paved, specific navigation within the recreation area and to the Juniper Loop can sometimes be a little confusing, as noted by past visitors. Clear signage at the entrance is a desired improvement to prevent accidental entry into day-use areas when heading for the campground. For those with large RVs, such as fifth wheels over 45 feet, caution is advised when rounding corners and curves within the loops, as some areas can be tight. However, the sites themselves are often described as level and paved, which is a significant advantage for RV setup. Cell service is generally good in the area, which is a bonus for staying connected if desired.

It's important for New Mexico locals to note that while Cochiti Lake feels wonderfully remote, comprehensive services are not immediately adjacent to the campground. For more extensive shopping, dining, or specialized services, a drive to Santa Fe (approximately 30-40 minutes north) or Albuquerque (about an hour south) will be necessary. This requires campers to plan ahead regarding supplies, particularly for longer stays.
