Chestnut Creek Campground focuses on providing essential services that enhance a rustic camping experience while prioritizing cleanliness and convenience.
Primitive & Small Camper Sites: The campground primarily accommodates rustic tent camping. However, some sites are also capable of accommodating pop-up campers and trailers up to 20 feet. It's important to note that these sites generally do not have hookups (no electric or water at the site), focusing on a more traditional, off-grid camping feel. Each campsite comes equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit, perfect for evening gatherings and cooking.
Hygienic Bathhouse Facilities: A consistent highlight from customer reviews is the campground's commitment to clean facilities. The bathhouse is well-maintained and features hot showers, lavatory stalls, and hand-washing sinks. An outdoor wash basin is also available for dishwashing and filling water jugs, providing a practical solution for campers.
On-Site Firewood and Ice: For ultimate convenience, firewood (USDA approved) and ice are readily available for purchase on-site. This eliminates the need for campers to bring these bulky essentials, making packing and setting up camp much easier.
Welcome Video & Helpful Advice: The owner, Seth, and his family, go above and beyond in their hospitality. They encourage guests to watch their "welcome video," which is described as a "hoot," setting a friendly and informative tone. Seth is also known for giving "plenty of advice" on local attractions and helping guests with any issues, as demonstrated by their willingness to assist campers who got stuck in the mud.
Trash Disposal: Designated areas for trash disposal are provided, ensuring the campground remains clean and tidy.
Self-Registration for Late Arrivals: The office is open until 11 p.m., but for those arriving later, a self-registration option is available, offering flexibility for travelers.
Pet-Friendly: Chestnut Creek Campground is a "pet friendly establishment," welcoming dogs on a leash, making it easier for pet owners to bring their furry companions on their West Virginia adventures.
Quiet Hours: To ensure a peaceful environment for all campers, quiet hours are observed from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. (starting at midnight on weekends).
Unbeatable Proximity to New River Gorge: This is arguably the most significant feature. Being just half a mile from the New River Gorge Bridge and in close proximity to major hiking, climbing, and river access points (like Fayette Station Rd) means unparalleled convenience for exploring the park.
Exceptional Hospitality and Family-Run Charm: The owner, Seth, and his family, are consistently praised for being "very sweet," "welcoming," "helpful," and "gracious." Their personalized approach, including a memorable welcome video and assistance with issues like getting unstuck, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels like a "family run, chosen family friendly" place.
Quiet and Peaceful Environment: Despite its central location, guests repeatedly highlight how "quiet and peaceful" the campground is, noting that they don't hear traffic from nearby roads. This tranquility is a major draw for those seeking a relaxing retreat after adventurous days.
Clean and Functional Facilities: The "very clean" bathhouse with hot showers, lavatory stalls, and outdoor wash basin is a significant comfort for campers. "Everything worked fine," ensuring a hassle-free experience.
Rustic Charm with Essential Comforts: The campground embraces "rustic tent camping" while still providing essential amenities like picnic tables and fire pits at each site. This allows for an authentic outdoor experience without being completely disconnected.
Convenience for Rafting and Hiking: The location is "great for rafting and hiking," being within a 5-minute drive of downtown Fayetteville (offering local restaurants/shops) and major trailheads. This logistical ease enhances the overall adventure.
Pet-Friendly Environment: For West Virginians who travel with their dogs, the campground's pet-friendly policy is a definite plus.
Value for Money: Reviews note that the "price is great too!", indicating that Chestnut Creek Campground offers an affordable yet high-quality camping experience.
While Chestnut Creek Campground primarily offers a direct-to-consumer model focused on value and authentic experience rather than complex promotional schemes, certain details indicate their approach to pricing and special considerations:
Affordable Pricing Structure: The reviews suggest that the "price is great too!", implying competitive and reasonable rates for their offerings. Rates are often structured per person per night, for example, $5/person/night for AAC members, $6/person/night for Access Fund Members, and $7/person/night for all others (though these specific prices may vary and should be confirmed directly). This transparent pricing makes budgeting for a trip straightforward.
Holiday Weekend Minimums: Like many popular campgrounds, a 3-night minimum stay is typically required for holiday and race weekends, with full payment required and no refunds for these periods. This helps manage demand during peak times.
Reservations Recommended: While they sometimes accommodate walk-ins, reservations are suggested for stays of two or more nights, especially during busy periods. Full payment is required for one-night stays, and a deposit for longer bookings, with the balance due at check-in.
Discounts (Confirmation Recommended): Publicly available information sometimes suggests potential discounts for AAA members, groups of 10 sites or more, and seasonal campers, typically offering 10% off daily rates. However, these generally exclude holidays and cannot be combined. It's crucial to confirm any applicable discounts directly with the campground.

Chestnut Creek Campground Reviews
Seth and his family are very sweet. Make sure to watch their welcome video, it's a hoot. Sites are great, location is great for rafting and hiking, and the price is great too! We had some trouble with mud when we got there as it had been raining for days and they were nothing but helpful in getting us unstuck. Even though they could not be there in person Seth gave us plenty of advice and was very gracious about us absolutely destroying one of the sites ':). It was quite the adventure and ultimately one of my more memorable camping experiences!
Jun 13, 2025 · Tom ZangerStayed here for our first family camp trip and had a perfectly lovely time. The location is beautiful and the sites were nicely set up. The facilities were very clean and worked well. The location is perfect - barely 5 minutes to the New River Gorge Visitor Center and easy access to the park's North side as well as all that nearby Fayetteville had to offer. Seth was very welcoming and helpful since our trip was just before the season opened and we are so grateful he let us stay because it really made our trip! Will definitely be recommending to our families for their future NRG trips!
Mar 31, 2025 · Allison IselyPerfect place for anyone a little more adventurous to stop at for the night! I found this place last minute looking for a place to car-camp, and it couldn't have turned out better. Simply call ahead, let them know your coming, put cash in a box upon arrival, and off to your camp spot! (I showed up around 9pm- no issues)
Apr 23, 2025 · Tracker OutdoorsGreat little campground tucked away in the woods but also just a short drive from Fayetteville, Summersville, and all the outdoor rec that the mountains of WV have to offer. The owner is very friendly and accommodating, prices are good, facilities are kept clean and there’s hot water to shower with. You can choose from different size campsites with room for multiple tents, an overland rig, full 20+ person group camp set up, or a single minimalist gig. There campfire rings in each site and firewood for sale and you usually have decent privacy from the other campsites unless it’s bridge day weekend (massive local festival).
Nov 20, 2024 · Trey AndrewVery kind owner. I showed at last minute and was still accepted. Clean restroom with hot running shower. Conveniently close to New River Gorge NP.
