Cedars Campground

Long Creek, Clearwater, ID, USA

4.0
A very nice getaway. The road is wash-boardy and it’s a dusty ride. If you don’t mind that, it’s fine. I would not recommend a Class A size RV in the campground as the road within the campground is rough in spots with limited space to turnaround. I had no problem with my 25ft Class C with a 6” lift, pulling a 10ft trailer. The road from Cedars south to Kelly’s Fork is quite narrow in spots, not allowing passing of other vehicles, but otherwise I made it through. The road in from Superior only has a couple of narrow spots. - Scott Gordon

Cedars Campground Introduce

For us Idaho locals, the allure of the wilderness is undeniable, and finding those perfect, serene spots to reconnect with nature is always a priority. Cedars Campground, nestled in the picturesque Long Creek area of Clearwater, Idaho, offers precisely that kind of tranquil escape. This isn't a bustling, amenity-packed resort; instead, it's a wonderfully rustic and free campground designed for those who cherish peace, quiet, and direct access to Idaho's breathtaking natural beauty. Situated alongside the North Fork of the Clearwater River and Long Creek, it provides a truly immersive experience in the heart of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.

Cedars Campground is known for its handful of generously sized campsites – typically five to six in total – which ensures a feeling of privacy and avoids the overcrowding often found in more popular areas. Each site comes equipped with a fire pit and a picnic table, providing the essential comforts for a relaxing outdoor stay. Whether you're an avid angler hoping to catch some of the abundant trout in the river, a keen hiker ready to explore a loop of the Idaho Centennial Trail that passes nearby, or simply looking for a quiet place to unwind with family, Cedars Campground offers a memorable experience. While it embraces a primitive camping style with no running water, its beautiful riverside location and peaceful atmosphere make it a highly recommended spot for those willing to embrace a true Idaho wilderness adventure.

Cedars Campground is situated in the Long Creek area of Clearwater, ID, USA, placing it within the vast Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. Its location directly by the North Fork of the Clearwater River and Long Creek is a significant draw for visitors.

Accessing Cedars Campground involves traversing forest service roads, which are characteristic of Idaho's more remote camping destinations. Based on traveler reviews, the road leading to the campground can be "wash-boardy" and dusty, indicating a gravel or dirt surface. This means that while standard vehicles can typically make the journey, a smoother ride might be experienced in vehicles with higher clearance. One camper noted that they had no issues with a 25ft Class C RV with a 6-inch lift, pulling a 10ft trailer, but advised against "Class A size RVs" due to rough spots and limited turnaround space within the campground itself.

Routes to the campground can vary. If approaching from the south towards Kelly's Fork, the road can be quite narrow in spots, making passing other vehicles difficult. However, the road in from Superior (presumably Superior, MT, suggesting a common cross-state route for some) reportedly only has a couple of narrow spots, making it a more manageable approach. It's crucial for visitors to be aware of these road conditions and plan their vehicle choice accordingly. Despite these road characteristics, the general consensus is that the journey is worthwhile for the "beautiful spot" that awaits. Being prepared for unpaved and potentially narrow sections of road is key to a smooth arrival at this serene riverside retreat. For precise directions and current road conditions, contacting the North Fork Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests is highly recommended before setting out.

Cedars Campground truly embodies the spirit of Idaho's outdoor heritage, making it an exceptional destination for us locals. We know that the best experiences often require a bit of effort to reach, and the "wash-boardy" roads are a small price to pay for the serene beauty that awaits. For Idahoans who prioritize peace, natural beauty, and a genuine connection to the wilderness over extensive amenities, Cedars Campground is a perfect fit. The fact that it's a free, first-come, first-served site also aligns perfectly with our adventurous and independent spirit, allowing for spontaneous getaways.

The generous size of the campsites, coupled with the limited number of overall sites, ensures that even during busier times, you'll find a sense of seclusion and privacy that is increasingly rare. Anglers will particularly appreciate the abundance of trout in the North Fork of the Clearwater River, offering rewarding fishing opportunities right at your doorstep. The nearby Idaho Centennial Trail provides excellent chances for hiking and horse riding, allowing us to explore more of our state's incredible landscapes. For families looking for a relaxing time away from screens and urban noise, or individuals seeking quiet contemplation by the river, Cedars Campground delivers an authentic Idaho camping experience that leaves you refreshed and reconnected to the wild heart of our state. Its rustic charm and natural appeal are exactly why it's so suitable for those of us who call Idaho home.
