4.0
Gorgeous Views, Clean Vaulted Toilet, Helpful Rangers, Friendly Store Clerk, Friendly Campers. This is the highest spot, Carter Knolls, within the Carter Lake Campgrounds, and being such was extremely hot even with a canopy tent. There is a steep path to the lake (see photos). We camped at C4, plenty of space for out popup camper and pick up. Nice fire ring and the grate was nice and heavy, if you plan on cooking with this grate bring something with smaller spacing. Not the lake for fishing from the shore. May be a nice spot for cooler temperatures if it is not windy. - Michele Schmidt

Carter Knolls Campground Introduce

For those of us living in Colorado, the allure of a lakeside getaway, especially one boasting breathtaking views, is incredibly strong. Carter Knolls Campground, nestled within the larger Carter Lake recreation area near Loveland, offers just such an experience. It holds the distinction of being the highest spot among the various Carter Lake campgrounds, promising unparalleled panoramic vistas of the surrounding foothills and the expansive lake below. It's a destination that truly emphasizes the "view" in "viewpoint," drawing campers who seek dramatic natural backdrops for their outdoor adventures.

However, like many high-elevation, exposed areas in Colorado, Carter Knolls comes with its own set of natural characteristics that savvy campers need to consider. While the "gorgeous views" are universally praised, so too is the prevalence of "absurd" wind. This isn't just a gentle breeze; it can be significant, especially for tent campers. Yet, for RVs and those well-prepared with robust tent setups, the reward is an undeniably spectacular setting, where sunrises and sunsets paint the sky over Carter Lake in a display of vibrant colors.

This campground offers a more intimate camping experience with a limited number of sites, including dedicated tent-only options and those suitable for pop-up campers and pickup trucks. Each site is equipped with a fire ring that includes a sturdy grate, perfect for those who enjoy cooking over an open flame (always check for local fire restrictions, which are common in Colorado). While basic, the facilities are generally well-maintained, with "clean vaulted toilets" frequently noted by visitors, contributing to a comfortable stay despite the more primitive nature of some amenities.

Carter Knolls is part of the extensive Larimer County Natural Resources system that manages Carter Lake, an 1,100-acre reservoir surrounded by 1,000 acres of public lands. This means campers at Carter Knolls have direct access to a wealth of recreational opportunities, from boating and water skiing on the lake to fishing and hiking the scenic trails that crisscross the area. While shore fishing at Carter Knolls itself might be challenging due to the steep path down to the water, the lake's reputation for excellent fishing remains a key draw for many.

Ultimately, Carter Knolls Campground is a specific kind of Colorado gem. It’s ideal for those who prioritize stunning natural beauty and are prepared for the elements, particularly the wind. It’s a place for adventurers, photographers, and anyone who wants to wake up to a postcard-perfect view, making it a truly memorable option for locals seeking a majestic lakeside escape in Larimer County.

Location and Accessibility

Carter Knolls Campground is strategically located within the larger Carter Lake recreation area, approximately 10 miles southwest of Loveland, Colorado, at an address of 5209-5599 S County Rd 31, Loveland, CO 80537, USA. Its position as the "highest spot" within the Carter Lake campgrounds means it offers commanding views of the lake and the surrounding foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

Accessing Carter Knolls is straightforward by vehicle. The campground is situated off County Road 31, a well-maintained route that provides easy driving from Loveland, Fort Collins, and other Front Range communities. However, as it is within the Carter Lake Recreation Area, a Larimer County Parks entrance permit is required in addition to camping fees. These permits can often be purchased online in advance, allowing for smoother entry. Given its elevation of around 5,800 feet, visitors should be aware of typical mountain weather patterns, though year-round operation suggests it's generally accessible.

Proximity to key features:

  • Carter Lake: The campground is directly adjacent to Carter Lake, though access to the water from Carter Knolls itself may involve a "steep path."
  • Loveland & Fort Collins: Offers relatively quick drives to these cities for supplies, dining, and other amenities.
  • Outdoor Recreation: Provides a convenient base for exploring other parts of Carter Lake and nearby natural areas.

The layout of the campground typically features well-spaced sites, with some accommodating RVs and trailers (up to 157 feet in some cases, although check specific site details for accurate lengths) and others designated as tent-only or walk-in. This makes it accessible for various camping setups, though large RVs should verify site suitability.

Services Offered

Carter Knolls Campground provides essential services for a comfortable, though somewhat primitive, camping experience, focusing on basic amenities given its high-vista location within a natural area.

  • Campsites: Offers a total of 7 campsites, including 2 designated tent-only sites and 5 sites suitable for RVs and trailers.
  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table for meal preparation and outdoor dining.
  • Fire Rings with Grates: Every site includes a heavy-duty fire ring with a grate, suitable for campfires and cooking (always check for current fire restrictions).
  • Vault Toilets: Clean vaulted toilets are available and are noted by visitors for their good condition.
  • No Potable Water at Sites: Critically, Carter Knolls Campground does not have individual water spigots at its sites. Potable water is available at frost-free spigots in other Carter Lake campgrounds (such as Eagle Campground) from approximately November to March, and at RV dump stations located at the south entrance of Carter Lake. Campers at Carter Knolls must bring their own water or be prepared to collect it from other designated areas.
  • No Electrical/Sewer Hookups: As a non-electric campground, there are no electrical or sewer hookups available at the campsites.
  • Trash Receptacles: Designated trash containers are available for waste disposal.
  • Reservable Sites: All sites at Carter Knolls Campground are reservable through the Larimer County Parks reservation system, up to 6 months in advance.
  • No Camp Host (often): One review specifically noted a lack of a camp host for an extended period, which may mean less immediate on-site assistance.

Features / Highlights

  • Highest Spot at Carter Lake: Commands the best and most expansive views of Carter Lake and the surrounding Larimer County landscape.
  • Gorgeous Panoramic Views: Consistently praised by visitors for stunning vistas, especially at sunrise and sunset.
  • Clean Vault Toilets: A highly appreciated amenity for a primitive campground, ensuring a more pleasant stay.
  • Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite being part of a larger recreation area, its small size and elevated position can offer a sense of tranquility.
  • Well-Maintained Sites: Campsites are generally reported as being well-maintained and providing adequate space.
  • Proximity to Carter Lake Activities: Easy access to boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming (at designated beaches), and scuba diving opportunities on Carter Lake.
  • Hiking Opportunities: Trails are available in the wider Carter Lake area, including a "steep path" from the campground down to the lake.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The natural setting offers opportunities to observe local wildlife, including deer and various bird species.
  • Ideal for Self-Sufficient Campers: Best suited for those who are prepared for dry camping (no water at site) and potential high winds.
  • Good for RVs and Pop-Ups: Sites are suitable for a range of RVs and pop-up campers, with some able to accommodate larger rigs (verify specific site details).

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Colorado locals, Carter Knolls Campground at Carter Lake presents a compelling option, particularly for those who prioritize unparalleled views and are well-prepared for a more rugged, authentic mountain-lake experience. Its suitability for residents stems from its blend of accessibility, stunning natural beauty, and the specific challenges that appeal to seasoned Colorado outdoor enthusiasts.

Firstly, the prime location in Larimer County, just a short drive from Loveland and Fort Collins, makes it an ideal spot for a quick weekend getaway without extensive travel. For us Coloradans, maximizing outdoor time is key, and Carter Knolls delivers on this front. The ease of reserving sites online through the Larimer County system also simplifies planning, allowing locals to secure their spot with less hassle.

Secondly, the "gorgeous views" are truly a highlight that resonates deeply with those of us who live in this scenic state. Waking up to panoramic vistas of Carter Lake and the foothills, or enjoying a dramatic sunset over the landscape, is precisely why many locals head to the mountains. While the "absurd" wind is a significant factor, it's also a common reality in many high-elevation Colorado locations. Locals who are experienced campers understand the importance of sturdy gear and proper anchoring, viewing it as part of the challenge and reward of camping in such exposed, beautiful spots. The warning about the wind, rather than deterring, helps prepare the right kind of camper for what to expect.

Furthermore, Carter Knolls offers a basic yet functional camping experience, with clean vault toilets and fire rings. The lack of potable water at individual sites, while a consideration, is manageable for prepared campers who can bring their own supply or utilize water sources at other Carter Lake campgrounds. This self-reliance is often a hallmark of the Colorado camping spirit.

In essence, Carter Knolls Campground is not for the faint of heart or those seeking a plush camping resort. It is, however, an outstanding choice for Colorado locals who crave dramatic scenery, are adept at handling variable mountain weather, and desire a more traditional, view-centric camping experience. It’s a perfect spot to embrace the raw beauty of our state, fish its waters, hike its trails, and enjoy the peace that comes with being high above it all, even if it means bracing against the wind.
