Caples Lake Campground

Kirkwood, CA 95646, USA

4.0
We come up from southern California the same week every year. We meet up with a group of good friends and family for a week of camping. Campground is right on the highway, but the campsites in the back are very quiet. Camp hosts, Martha & Dave are great! Firewood is available for purchase. Campsites were leveled and improved a few years ago. Campsites are easy walking distance to Caples Lake. Lake has boat rental and bait shop. Just a few miles to Kirkwood Ski Resort and their general store. 45 minute drive to South Lake Tahoe. No running water while we were there, but we knew ahead of time and brought our own. Toilets are rustic (kinda like a nice outhouse) and need some paint, but, hey, we're camping, right? Some sites can handle trailers, but we stay in tents. It trained a few days this year, but it was light and there's no mud. We'll be back next year. - Carl K.

Introduction / Overview: Discover Serenity at Caples Lake Campground

For California locals seeking a genuine High Sierra camping experience that blends accessibility with natural rugged beauty, Caples Lake Campground stands out as an exceptional choice. Nestled at an elevation of approximately 7,850 feet within the majestic Eldorado National Forest, this campground offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Unlike many highly developed or reservation-only sites, Caples Lake Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, providing a valuable option for spontaneous adventurers ready to immerse themselves in alpine tranquility.

Caples Lake Campground is celebrated by visitors for its peaceful atmosphere and its direct proximity to the stunning Caples Lake. While amenities are intentionally rustic – as noted by campers, there may not always be running water, and toilets are "like a nice outhouse" – this contributes to its authentic camping charm. The campground's recent renovations have improved sites, making them more level and accommodating. It's a place where you can truly unplug, enjoy the crisp mountain air, and gaze at incredible starry nights. Whether you're a family looking for a quiet week-long stay, a group of friends meeting for an annual gathering, or an individual seeking high-altitude solitude, Caples Lake Campground offers a memorable slice of California's pristine alpine wilderness.

Location and Accessibility: High Sierra Beauty on Highway 88

Caples Lake Campground is precisely located in Kirkwood, CA 95646, USA. This address places it directly along California Highway 88 (Carson Pass Highway), a scenic route that winds through the high elevations of the Sierra Nevada. For California locals, especially those coming from Northern or Central California, Highway 88 provides relatively straightforward access to this alpine gem. It's approximately 59 miles east of Jackson and just a few miles from the Kirkwood Ski Resort, offering a perfect blend of remote natural beauty and proximity to local conveniences.

The campground's location right on Highway 88 makes it highly accessible for various vehicle types, including tents, trailers, and RVs (with some sites accommodating RVs up to 40 feet). While it's right off the main road, reviewers note that the campsites further back are surprisingly quiet, providing a peaceful retreat. Caples Lake itself is easily within walking distance from the campsites, allowing for convenient access to the lake's shores for fishing, boating, and swimming. It's important to remember that due to its high elevation, Highway 88 and the campground are typically open from early June to mid-October, with dates highly dependent on snowmelt and snowfall. Before planning a trip, especially in the shoulder seasons, California locals should always check road conditions (e.g., Caltrans Highway 88 updates) and campground opening status with the Eldorado National Forest to ensure a smooth and safe journey to this beautiful High Sierra destination.

Services Offered: Rustic Comforts for an Authentic Camping Experience

Caples Lake Campground provides a set of essential services designed to facilitate a comfortable, yet distinctly rustic, camping experience. While it lacks some of the modern amenities found in more developed resorts, it offers the core necessities for enjoying the High Sierra:

  • First-Come, First-Served Campsites: With 30-45 campsites available, all operate on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning no reservations are accepted. Campers must arrive to secure a spot.
  • Tent, Trailer & RV Accommodation: Sites are suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs, with various spur lengths (20 to 40 feet) to accommodate different setups. Some sites offer walk-in access for tents.
  • Camp Host On Site: A camp host (like Martha & Dave, praised in reviews) is typically present to assist campers, manage the campground, and often sell firewood.
  • Vault Toilets: Rustic vault toilets (outhouses) are available throughout the campground. While basic, they are functional for a camping environment.
  • No Potable Water (as of recent reviews): It is crucial to note that running water may not be available. Campers should bring all their own drinking, cooking, and washing water. This is a recurring point in reviews.
  • Fire Rings & Grills: Each campsite includes a table, fire ring, and grill for cooking and campfires, subject to current fire restrictions. A California Campfire Permit is required.
  • Trash Collection: Trash collection services are provided, helping maintain the cleanliness of the campground.
  • Firewood for Purchase: Firewood is often available for purchase from the camp host (e.g., at site 26), ensuring a convenient source for campfires.
  • Bear Boxes/Food Storage: Given that bears frequent the area, campers are required to properly store all food, soaps, and garbage in bear-resistant containers or vehicles.
  • Pet-Friendly: Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash at all times, adhering to forest service regulations.
