Great piece river front land that has been in the hands of either Scouts or County hands for over 100 years. From peacocks, turkeys, magpies, roosters, river otters and fish. My son and I had a great time. Tim, the staff person there is very knowledgeable about the history, fauna and land. Doesn't feel like I am in downtown Sacto - Viraj Shah

Camp Pollock Introduce

For Californians seeking a refreshing escape into nature without venturing far from urban conveniences, Camp Pollock offers a remarkable and unique experience right on the banks of the American River in Sacramento. While it bears the name "camp," it functions as much more than a traditional campground. This 11-acre riverfront property, managed by the Sacramento Valley Conservancy, serves as a versatile community resource, a beautiful event venue, and a haven for wildlife, all while providing limited, specific camping opportunities primarily for organized youth and educational groups.

Camp Pollock has a rich history, having been in the hands of the Boy Scouts of America and other community organizations for over a century. This long legacy has preserved a significant piece of natural land that feels surprisingly removed from the city's hustle and bustle, despite its close proximity to downtown Sacramento. It's a place where the sounds of urban life fade, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the calls of local wildlife. For locals, it represents a cherished "hidden gem" that provides a vital connection to nature and a versatile space for various gatherings and outdoor activities.

Introduction / Overview: A Riverside Oasis with a Rich History

Camp Pollock is an extraordinary natural space nestled along the lower American River Parkway. This property is a rare find in such an urban setting, offering an 11-acre stretch of riverfront land that invites both quiet contemplation and lively community gatherings. Central to the site is the historic Myrtle Johnston Lodge, a rustic 3,000 square foot building dating back to the 1920s, which adds a touch of charm and functionality to the property.

Managed by the Sacramento Valley Conservancy since 2013, Camp Pollock is dedicated to preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Sacramento Valley. It's not a typical public campground with individual campsites for rent by families or solo travelers on a walk-in basis. Instead, it prioritizes youth camping and educational groups, while also serving as a popular venue for private events, weddings, and community gatherings. Day-use visitors are welcome from sunrise to sunset to enjoy its trails, picnic areas, and river access, making it a multifaceted outdoor destination for locals in California.

Location and Accessibility

Camp Pollock is conveniently located at 1501 Northgate Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95815, USA. This address places it just north of downtown Sacramento, within the heart of the Lower American River Parkway, between Discovery Park and Cal Expo. This strategic location makes it incredibly accessible for residents across the greater Sacramento area and beyond, offering a natural retreat without requiring extensive travel.

Access to Camp Pollock is straightforward from major Sacramento roadways. Northgate Boulevard provides direct entry, and its proximity to Highway 160 and I-5 means that visitors from various parts of the city and surrounding regions can reach the site with ease. While it feels secluded, the accessibility allows for spontaneous day trips or convenient arrangements for event attendees. Free parking is available on-site, further enhancing its accessibility for vehicle owners. The area itself is a testament to Sacramento's commitment to preserving green spaces, offering a vibrant natural environment close to urban centers.
