Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook

26 Hudson Rd, Highlands, NJ 07732, USA

4.0
Great tent-camping site. Nice knowing there won't be a generator roaring next door.Notes: lots of animals (raccoons and foxes), so use the "bear boxes" for all food and trash. Ocean-side beach parking NOT included, but bay side accessible and kind of more interesting anyway. If you want to access ocean beaches (which are nice) bring bikes--they're too far from camp to walk (or pay the extra to park). Very nice biking trails to explore the area.Cars not permitted at actual camp sites, but parking lot nearby (may fill up if busy).Well-lit central restroom facility with "flushies" but no showers. No electricity at sites but potable water nearby. No playgrounds. Some sites have picnic shelters. Plenty of poison ivy in parks but avoidable in camp. Must buy firewood there if you want a campfire (no gleaning/carry-in). No soda/snack machines (there are elsewhere in the park). 24-hr access to camp once registered (i.e., if you have to come and go during stay). Friendly rangers. My new favorite campground! - Kathy Mulholland

Nestled within the breathtaking Gateway National Recreation Area on the Sandy Hook peninsula, this campground offers a distinct approach to outdoor living. It caters specifically to tent campers, promising a quieter atmosphere free from the hum of RV generators. While it focuses on essential amenities rather than extensive luxuries, it provides a perfect base for exploring one of New Jersey's most iconic and ecologically significant coastal areas. It's a place where the simplicity of camping meets the vibrant activities of a national park, all within easy reach for New Jersey residents.

This article will provide a comprehensive overview of Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook, highlighting its location, the services it offers, and the many features that make it a standout choice for local campers. From understanding its unique setup to discovering the array of activities available nearby, we'll cover everything you need to know to plan a memorable and engaging camping trip.

Location and Accessibility

Camp Gateway - Sandy Hook is ideally situated at 26 Hudson Rd, Highlands, NJ 07732, USA. This puts it squarely within the Sandy Hook Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area, a barrier peninsula at the northern tip of the Jersey Shore. This location is truly remarkable, offering campers a unique blend of ocean and bay access, pristine natural habitats, and significant historical landmarks.

The campground itself is located near Horseshoe Cove on the bay side of the peninsula, providing a somewhat sheltered environment. Its position offers a different perspective of Sandy Hook, often favored for its calmer waters and intriguing marshland ecosystems. While the ocean-side beaches are not directly accessible from the campsite without a walk or bike ride (or paying for beach parking), the bay side offers its own charm and opportunities for exploration.

Accessibility to the campground involves parking your vehicle in a nearby lot, as cars are not permitted at the actual campsites. This walk-in setup, typically about ¼ mile from the parking area, contributes to the peaceful atmosphere, free from vehicle noise. Carts are generally available to help haul your gear, making the short walk manageable. The overall location in Highlands, NJ, means easy access to local towns for supplies, dining, and other necessities, blending the rustic camping experience with the convenience of nearby communities. The entry point to Sandy Hook is well-marked, and the park is easily reachable via major New Jersey routes, making it a convenient destination for residents across the state.

Services Offered

  • Tent Camping Only: Exclusively designed for tent camping, ensuring a traditional and quieter camping experience without RV generators. Each campsite accommodates up to six people and two tents (or one tent and a covered shelter).
  • Walk-in Sites with Carts: Sites are walk-in, approximately ¼ mile from the parking lot, with carts available to assist campers in transporting their gear.
  • Central Restroom Facility: A well-lit central restroom facility is provided, equipped with flush toilets. (Note: There are no showers directly at the campground, but outdoor rinse-off showers are available at nearby beach concession areas).
  • Potable Water: Potable water spigots are located conveniently nearby the campsites, ensuring access to fresh water.
  • Food Storage (Bear Boxes): Given the presence of animals like raccoons and foxes, individual "bear boxes" are provided at each site for secure food and trash storage, a crucial service for preventing wildlife encounters.
  • Firewood Sales: Campers are required to purchase firewood on-site if they wish to have a campfire, preventing the spread of invasive species often brought in with outside wood. No gleaning of wood is permitted.
  • 24-Hour Access: Once registered, campers have 24-hour access to the camp, allowing for flexibility in coming and going during their stay.
  • Friendly Rangers: Reviews highlight the presence of friendly and helpful park rangers, contributing to a welcoming and safe environment.
