Its proximity to iconic Pennsylvania state parks like Hell's Hollow and McConnell's Mill adds significant value, making it an excellent basecamp for exploring these popular natural attractions. Breakneck Campground boasts a wonderfully accessible and strategically placed location for Pennsylvanians looking to explore some of our state's most beautiful natural areas. You'll find this rustic gem at 1757 Cheeseman Rd, Portersville, PA 16051, USA. This address places it squarely in Portersville, a community in Lawrence County that serves as a gateway to several popular state parks and natural attractions in Western Pennsylvania.
The key to its appeal lies in its close proximity to both Hell's Hollow and McConnell's Mill State Park. These two natural landmarks are beloved by locals for their stunning waterfalls, challenging hiking trails, historic grist mill, and breathtaking gorge scenery. Being "near both Hells Hollow and McConnell's Mill" means campers at Breakneck have virtually immediate access to these recreational opportunities without long drives. This allows for more time spent enjoying the trails, photography, or simply soaking in the natural beauty. While providing a secluded and quiet camping experience, the campground is still within a reasonable driving distance for many residents across Western and even central Pennsylvania, making it a convenient choice for a weekend getaway or a longer outdoor adventure. Its location truly maximizes your ability to explore the wilder side of our state.
Based on the available information, Breakneck Campground appears to offer a more rustic and less amenity-heavy camping experience, focusing on the natural setting rather than extensive services.
- Campsites: The campground provides designated sites for camping, with some offering beautiful and secluded spots, particularly "on the edge of the gorge." The primary focus seems to be on providing a natural setting for campers.
- Seclusion: Campers have highlighted the ability to find "secluded" campsites, suggesting a layout that provides a good degree of privacy between sites, appealing to those who prefer a more isolated experience.
- On-Site Owner/Management: Reviews mention interaction with an "owner" who was described as "very kind and respectful," indicating that there is on-site or readily available management to assist campers.
- Relaxing and Enjoyable Environment: Guests have found the atmosphere to be "very relaxing and enjoyable," which points to a quiet and peaceful ambiance that encourages unwinding.
It's important to note the lack of mention of common campground amenities such as bathhouses (with showers), traditional restrooms (beyond potential porta-potties if provided and not mentioned), electric hookups, water hookups, or dump stations. This aligns with the "rustic" feel, suggesting campers should come prepared for a more self-sufficient experience. The conflicting information regarding responsiveness to online bookings also indicates that direct communication via phone might be the most reliable method for inquiries and reservations.
Breakneck Campground, despite some operational concerns, holds several key features and highlights that make it an attractive option for specific types of campers in Pennsylvania.
- Beautiful and Secluded Campsites: A primary highlight is the availability of "beautiful and secluded campsite on the edge of the gorge." This offers a unique and intimate connection with nature, appealing to those seeking privacy and stunning natural views.
- Proximity to Natural Attractions: Its location near both Hell's Hollow and McConnell's Mill State Park is a significant draw. Campers have easy access to these renowned natural areas for hiking, exploring waterfalls, and enjoying picturesque landscapes.
- Relaxing and Enjoyable Atmosphere: Guests consistently describe their stay as "very relaxing and enjoyable," indicating that the campground's natural setting fosters a peaceful and unwinding environment. This is a key feature for those looking to escape the stresses of daily life.
- Kind and Respectful Owner/Staff: Positive interactions with the owner are highlighted, suggesting a welcoming and helpful on-site presence for those who are able to connect.
- Rustic and Authentic Camping Experience: For campers who prefer a more primitive, back-to-nature approach without the distractions of extensive amenities, Breakneck offers that authentic outdoor feel.

- Scenic Gorge Access: Being on the "edge of the gorge" provides unique geological features and potentially dramatic views, making it a distinct camping environment.
It's crucial for potential campers to manage expectations regarding amenities (e.g., no mention of bathhouses, electric, or water hookups) and ensure clear communication regarding booking and check-in procedures, given past feedback. However, for those prioritizing a quiet, naturally beautiful, and secluded spot close to iconic state park hiking, Breakneck Campground presents a compelling option.
Given the limited public information and the specific nature of the feedback provided for Breakneck Campground, there's no publicly available data on specific "Promotions or Special Offers." This campground appears to operate on a more rustic, direct-booking model rather than frequently advertising promotional deals.
For Pennsylvania locals considering a stay, the primary "offer" would likely be the very reasonable rates for its secluded, natural setting, especially when compared to amenity-rich campgrounds. However, due to the noted issues with communication and refunds in one review, it is absolutely paramount to confirm all details, including pricing, cancellation policies, and check-in procedures, directly with the campground by phone before making any commitments or payments.
It is possible that, upon direct inquiry, the owners might offer some flexibility or standard weekly/monthly rates, especially if you are looking for an extended stay. However, without concrete information, any mention of specific promotions would be speculative and could lead to disappointment. Therefore, the best and only reliable advice is to prioritize direct communication and clear confirmation of all booking terms before your arrival.

It is strongly recommended that all prospective campers call these numbers directly to confirm availability, current pricing, specific campsite features, and all check-in procedures. Given the previous feedback about online booking and communication challenges, a direct phone conversation is the most reliable way to ensure a smooth arrival and stay. This will allow you to get precise information from the management, clarify any concerns, and ensure that your expectations align with what the campground offers for a successful and relaxing visit to this secluded spot in Portersville.
In conclusion, for Pennsylvanians who truly cherish a rustic, quiet, and secluded camping experience, Breakneck Campground offers a compelling opportunity. Breakneck Campground Reviews
A RIP OFF! Worst campground ever. I paid for a weeks stay on line. I showed up to check in and no one is there at the office. I called them repeatedly with no answer. They would not refund my money. And no answer even a month later.
Jun 03, 2025 · jeff robertsWe decided to stop here to camp and were able to find a beautiful and secluded campsite on the edge of the gorge. The owner was very kind and respectful. We decided to stay two extra nights because we found it very relaxing and enjoyable. The location was great as it was near both Hells Hollow and McConnell’s Mill.
Aug 14, 2024 · Matthew Van RaalteIt was great. The cabin was cheap and provided electricity and shelter which is all we required. It was clean and offered a mini fridge and coffee maker which we didn't really utilize since we brought our own cooler and coffee thermos. They allowed us an early check in.Fire pit and picnic table on the campground itself. Bathroom and shower on site. The area was quiet and had easy access to the lake.Great stay, would recommend.
Jul 03, 2024 · Sean BurgeWebsite states that bathrooms are clean and modern. They are definitely NOT!!! Very dirty and old looking! Thank goodness my husband and I have a Planet Fitness membership. There's one close by the campground we could shower at. PF facilities are definitely clean and modern!
