Whether you're an avid angler hoping to cast a line in the Wise River, a family looking for a tranquil spot to create memories, or an RVer seeking a convenient and shaded pull-through site, this campground offers a well-maintained and enjoyable experience. Let's delve into what makes Boulder Creek Campground and Picnic Area a top choice for Montanans looking for their next outdoor adventure.
Boulder Creek Campground and Picnic Area is conveniently located at Wise River, MT 59762, USA. Situated in the heart of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, its precise location is along the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway (Forest Road 73), approximately 12.4 miles south of the intersection with Montana Highway 43 in Wise River. This placement makes it incredibly accessible, as the road leading to and through the campground is paved, a notable advantage for campers with larger RVs or those simply preferring a smoother ride.
The campground's position right along the Wise River provides immediate access to excellent fishing and the soothing sounds of flowing water. The surrounding area is characterized by heavy tree cover, which contributes to the cooler, wetter microclimate that visitors often appreciate, especially when compared to the drier conditions prevalent elsewhere in Montana during late summer. Its high elevation, around 6,400 feet, further contributes to this cooler environment. Being part of the Wise River Ranger District of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, it is well-integrated into a network of outdoor recreational opportunities, with other campgrounds and trails nearby. This accessibility, combined with the scenic drive along the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway, makes the journey to Boulder Creek Campground a pleasant part of the overall outdoor experience for Montanans.
- Paved Sites: A significant advantage, both the campground roads and individual sites are paved. This provides a smoother experience for RVs and trailers and helps keep sites cleaner, especially during wet weather.
- Varied Campsite Sizes: The campground offers a mix of site sizes. There are at least three notable pull-through sites designed to accommodate larger 5th-wheel toy haulers and RVs, alongside several smaller and medium-sized sites for tents and smaller trailers. The maximum recommended trailer length is 30 feet.
- Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a nice picnic table, providing a dedicated and clean space for meals, games, and outdoor relaxation.
- Fire Rings: Decent-sized fire rings are available at each site, allowing campers to enjoy traditional campfires for cooking, warmth, and ambiance. (Always check for current fire restrictions before lighting a fire.)
- Newer Style Outhouses (Vault Toilets): While still outhouses, they are noted as being "newer style" and generally "well kept," providing a more pleasant experience than older, less maintained facilities. These are clean and regularly serviced.
- Hand Pump for Fresh Water: Potable water is available via a hand pump, a convenient amenity for drinking and basic cooking needs. Campers are advised that garbage services are not provided, so a pack-in/pack-out policy is in effect.
- Affordable Camping Fee: The cost per night is noted as being very reasonable, with one review mentioning an $8 per night fee. This makes it an incredibly budget-friendly option for extended stays or quick weekend trips. (It's always wise to confirm current fees with the Forest Service as they can change.)
- No Hookups: It is important to note that Boulder Creek Campground does not offer electrical, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, maintaining a more rustic and traditional camping experience.
- Cooler, Wetter Microclimate: This is a standout feature for late summer. Unlike many drier areas of Montana, Boulder Creek's microclimate is "cooler and wetter," offering a refreshing escape reminiscent of the eastern slopes of the Cascades. This "green" environment is a welcome break from the typical "hot, dry, tan" of summer.
- Riverside Location on Wise River: The campground is situated directly along the Wise River, providing easy access for fishing. The river's flow creates a soothing "white noise" that many find conducive to sleep and peace, also helping to absorb other campsite noises.
- Excellent Shade: An abundance of trees throughout the campground provides "excellent shade on those hot days," a crucial comfort during Montana's warm summers. This dense tree cover also helps in "absorbing some of the noise," contributing to the overall quiet atmosphere.
- Quiet and Clean Environment: Visitors consistently praise the campground for being "nice, clean, quiet." This well-maintained setting enhances the outdoor experience, allowing campers to truly relax and enjoy their surroundings.
- Accommodates Larger RVs: The presence of paved roads and several pull-through sites that can accommodate larger 5th-wheel toy haulers and RVs is a significant highlight, making it accessible for a wider range of camping vehicles.
- Proximity to Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway: The campground is located directly on this scenic byway, offering a beautiful drive and serving as a convenient base for exploring other nearby campgrounds and the wider Pioneer Mountains area, including hiking trails and other recreational opportunities.
- Wildlife Sightings: While not explicitly mentioned in all reviews, being in a heavily wooded area along a river within a national forest typically means opportunities for wildlife viewing, from various bird species to deer and possibly larger mammals. One review specifically mentioned seeing a "cow and calf moose wander through plus a few deer."
- Ease of Finding a Spot (Weekdays): While popular on weekends, especially holidays, it's generally "fairly easy to find an open spot on weekdays," offering flexibility for those with more adaptable schedules.

Boulder Creek Campground and Picnic Area Reviews
Nice, clean, quiet campground right along the river. The microclimate here is cooler and wetter then you would expect for this area of Montana. Much more reminiscent of the eastern slope of the Cascades. The green is a great break from the hot, dry, tan of late summer Montana. Well worth the couple of hour drive for us. Will definitely be back here and also to explore the other half dozen campgrounds in the area.
Sep 02, 2022 · Andrew SandersThis campground is one of the top 3 along the Scenic Byway between Wise River & Polaris, MT. The road & sites are paved. There is 3 nice pull thru sites that will accommodate larger 5th-Wheel ToyHaulers/RV's & several small/medium sites. This place is fairly well kept. Decent sized fire rings, nice picnic tables & the newer style outhouses. An abundance of trees provide excellent shade on those hot days & to be quite honest I think they absorb some of the noise as well. Fishing can be done in The Wise River which flows along the western border of the campground. There is also a hand pump for fresh water. The cost was $8 per night last time I stayed. Fairly easy to find an open spot on weekdays, but you best show up early on weekends (especially holiday weekends). Thanks !!
