Boca Spring Campground

Stockrest Springs Rd, Truckee, CA 96161, USA

4.0
I camped here with a group of friends this past weekend. A solid spot with a good tree cover and clear underbrush. Most of the sites are slanted though, but we were able to find places to pitch tents without too much rolling. The picnic tables and fire rings were in good shape. There was a bear box or two on some sites, but most didn't appear to have them yet. We just put all our food and trash away in the car every night and had no issues. The trees helped the area stay cool and still let enough open sky through. The stars were beautiful and very visible every night as there was very little light pollution. There's a meadow next to the campsite that's a beautiful spot to take in the sunset and see the stars.I didn't have much interaction with the host, but there was some firewood. It's a heavy ATV area, so that was a background noise at times. Overall though, a great time and I already recommended it to a few friends because we were able to book last minute this summer. - Tevis Pieper

Boca Spring Campground is nestled within the beautiful Tahoe National Forest, approximately one mile east of Boca Reservoir and just 20 minutes from the vibrant mountain town of Truckee. Visitors frequently praise its natural setting, describing it as a "solid spot with a good tree cover and clear underbrush" that helps the "area stay cool." The clear skies at night make for "beautiful and very visible" stars, with "very little light pollution," offering a truly immersive celestial experience. While some sites might be "slanted," resourceful campers find ways to pitch tents comfortably, and the "picnic tables and fire rings were in good shape." The presence of dedicated camp hosts, like the "amazing host, Andrew," who is "very attentive, friendly and fun to talk to," further enhances the visitor experience, ensuring the campground remains in "such a great condition." While it's noted as a "heavy ATV area" at times, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with campers recommending it to friends for its great experience and the ability to book last minute during the summer.

Location and Accessibility

Boca Spring Campground is strategically located within the Tahoe National Forest, specifically at Stockrest Springs Rd, Truckee, CA 96161, USA. This places it approximately one mile east of Boca Reservoir, making it a gateway to a variety of water-based activities. The campground is conveniently situated just 20 minutes from Truckee, a renowned year-round recreational mountain town that offers essential amenities and services.

Access to Boca Spring Campground is generally straightforward. From Reno, visitors can take I-80 west to the Hirschdale Exit, then proceed north for approximately 3 miles before turning right and continuing for about 1 mile to reach the campground. From Truckee, the route involves taking I-80 east to the Hirschdale exit, turning left, traveling approximately 3 miles, then turning right and going 1 mile to the campground. The turn-off is well-marked. This easy access from a major interstate makes it a convenient destination for various vehicles, though it's important to note that while tent camping is prevalent, the sites can accommodate camper vans and small trailers/RVs. Some sites might be "slanted," which is a common characteristic of natural terrain campgrounds and may require leveling for comfortable setup.

While the campground offers a sense of being immersed in nature, its proximity to Truckee ensures that campers are not completely isolated. Truckee provides grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, and other services. Cell service in forested areas can be spotty, and while not explicitly mentioned for Boca Spring, it's a good practice to plan for limited connectivity. Despite the occasional "background noise" from ATVs, a common presence in this multi-use forest area, the overall accessibility and the short distance to both natural attractions and town amenities make Boca Spring Campground a highly convenient choice for Californians seeking a blend of wilderness and comfort.
