This isn't just another stop on your journey; it's a "quiet spot tucked in just over the Ohio line, right on the banks of the Ohio River." Imagine pulling up to your site and being greeted by a "nice river view lot," where you can enjoy the fascinating spectacle of "river tugboats and the train." It’s a place that offers both natural beauty and a unique rhythm provided by the passing barges and trains. Guests consistently say, "We will be back, we recommend this RV Park," a testament to its charm and value. Whether you're an experienced RVer or just looking for an "inexpensive place to stay overnight," Blue Heron Campground provides a memorable and authentically West Virginian experience.
Blue Heron Campground is strategically located at Belmont, WV 26134, USA. This address places it directly on the banks of the majestic Ohio River, offering prime waterfront access and stunning views. Belmont, a small community in Pleasants County, West Virginia, is situated just across the state line from Ohio, making it an easily accessible destination for residents of both states and those traveling along the Ohio River corridor.
Accessibility to the campground is generally straightforward, as Belmont is located along WV-2, a scenic highway that parallels the Ohio River. While the exact turns off the main road might be subtle for newcomers, the overall approach is uncomplicated. Its location near major industrial activity (like the mention of a power plant nearby in some property listings) doesn't detract from its peaceful, riverside ambiance, as highlighted by satisfied campers who appreciate the quiet. The ease of access combined with its picturesque riverfront setting makes Blue Heron Campground a convenient and desirable spot for a West Virginia getaway.
Blue Heron Campground focuses on providing essential and comfortable amenities for RV and tent campers, ensuring a straightforward and enjoyable stay right on the Ohio River. They cater to both long-term and short-term visitors with a clear set of offerings:
- RV Sites with Hookups: The campground offers 28 RV sites, each equipped with "full electric and city water/sewer hookups." This includes both 30-amp and 50-amp service, accommodating a wide range of RVs and campers.
- Tent Camping: Dedicated creek-side tent sites are available, including a picnic table and a fire ring. It's important to note that these tent sites do not have electric hookups and stays are limited to no more than seven consecutive nights.
- Bathhouse: A communal bathhouse is on-site, providing essential restroom and shower facilities for campers.
- Laundry Facility: For convenience during longer stays, a laundry facility with quarter-operated machines is available.
- Fishing Areas: Guests have access to "fishing areas on Millcreek," which flows into the Ohio River, providing opportunities for anglers.
- Kayak and Canoe Launch: A small, on-site launch facilitates easy access for kayaks and canoes to explore Millcreek and the Ohio River.
- Firewood Sales: Firewood is available for purchase on-site, and guests are reminded not to bring out-of-state firewood to help prevent the spread of pests. Guests are permitted to bring their own fire rings, provided they have a bottom.
- On-site Dollar General Store (Mentioned in Property Listings): Property listings for the campground mention the convenience of a Dollar General store "situated on the property." While not explicitly a campground service, this provides easy access to basic groceries and supplies.
- Wi-Fi at Office Area: While there is no campground-wide internet, Wi-Fi is available at the office area for campground guests. Cell service (AT&T 5G, Verizon 4G LTE, T-Mobile/Sprint 4G LTE) is also noted.
Pricing for RV sites is noted at $40/night, $225/weekly, and $550/monthly, with tent camping at $20/night, indicating an "inexpensive" option for various stay lengths.
Blue Heron Campground stands out for several distinctive features that make it a compelling choice for campers seeking a unique and relaxing experience along the Ohio River.
- Ohio River Frontage & Views: The paramount highlight is its direct access to and "beautiful view of the river." Campers can enjoy uninterrupted vistas of the majestic Ohio River, and witness "river tugboats" and barges navigating the active channel, providing a constant, fascinating show.
- Train Spotting: Adding to the unique ambiance is an "active rail line" that passes behind the campground. For train enthusiasts, this means the regular passing of trains provides an additional layer of entertainment and a nostalgic backdrop to your camping experience. Reviewers explicitly mention enjoying "the train," often several times a day.
- Affordable & Inexpensive Stay: Repeatedly noted as a "very inexpensive place to stay overnight," Blue Heron Campground offers excellent value, particularly for those looking for budget-friendly camping without sacrificing key amenities or a scenic location.
- Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite the presence of the active river and rail line, the campground is described as a "quiet spot," implying that the sounds of nature and passing vessels blend into a generally serene environment, conducive to relaxation.
- Full Hookup Convenience: The availability of "full electric and city water/sewer hookups" at each RV site (28 in total) provides significant comfort and convenience, reducing the need for frequent trips to fill or dump tanks.
- Pet-Friendly (Inferred): While not explicitly stated in reviews, most campgrounds of this nature are pet-friendly, allowing well-behaved dogs on leash, contributing to its suitability for many campers.
- Fishing & Paddling Access: The dedicated fishing areas on Millcreek and the small kayak/canoe launch provide easy opportunities for water-based recreation right from the campground.
- Year-Round Operation: Blue Heron Campground is open all year, offering flexibility for spontaneous trips or off-season adventures when other campgrounds might be closed.
As an "inexpensive place to stay overnight," Blue Heron Campground's main "offer" is its consistent affordability coupled with essential amenities and unique scenic entertainment. While explicit, short-term promotions like percentage discounts aren't highlighted, their pricing structure already provides significant value, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers and locals alike.
Their pricing model—$40/night, $225/weekly, and $550/monthly—effectively acts as a built-in promotion for longer stays, offering progressively lower daily rates for weekly and monthly commitments. This is a common and highly appreciated "special offer" in the camping world, especially for those who might be working remotely or planning an extended exploration of the Ohio Valley. They also accept all major credit cards, though a 3% courtesy fee is applied to credit card charges, encouraging cash or check payments for potential savings. It's always a good idea to confirm rates and any unadvertised specials directly when booking.

Jul 12, 2023 · Red HeisQuiet spot tucked in just over the Ohio line, right on the banks of the Ohio River. Very inexpensive place to stay overnight in your camper or RV. Sites available with water and power, and sites without. An active rail line and barge channel do pass behind the campground.
Apr 09, 2024 · Will SeeleySpent the weekend here. Although there was nothing for children to do, it was a peaceful weekend. It's close to the railroad tracks, but they never bothered us at all. There's a very nice gift shop across the road from the campground. We will stay again.
May 01, 2024 · Violet BoleyI spent many beautiful days there. I one day want to go back and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
