Campground ★4.0

Beautiful secluded campground, perfect for stargazing! Make sure you come during new moon to see the most stars. You will need a high clearance vehicle, 4x4 not necessary though. There are toilets and some campsites have grills, but those are the only amenities. Bring all the food and water you will need + extra, you don't want to be too careful. Also there are no trash cans, so be prepared to carry any waste you have out with you. The lake is stocked with trout, and there is plenty of opportunities for hiking. Bring a lot of lights and bug spray! - Gabriel Barreras

BLM Dodge Reservoir campground Introduce

For those seeking an authentic and secluded Northern California camping experience, the BLM Dodge Reservoir Campground offers a remarkable escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Tucked away in the high desert landscape of Lassen County, this Bureau of Land Management site is a pristine, natural retreat that provides a peaceful and lightly-used environment. It’s an ideal destination for California residents and visitors alike who appreciate the quiet beauty of the outdoors, where the night sky is the main event and the soundtrack is the gentle whisper of the wind. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the campground, its amenities, and the unique highlights that make it a hidden gem in the California wilderness.

BLM Dodge Reservoir Campground is a designated camping area that accommodates both RVs and tent campers on the shores of the 480-acre Dodge Reservoir. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this site is a testament to the power of public lands to offer accessible, yet truly wild, recreational opportunities. The campground’s remote location means it's often a quiet sanctuary, making it a perfect spot for those who want to disconnect and reconnect with nature. Here, the focus isn't on luxurious amenities, but on the raw, beautiful landscape and the serenity it provides.

Location and Accessibility

The BLM Dodge Reservoir Campground is situated approximately 17 miles northeast of Ravendale, California, at an elevation of about 5,600 feet. The setting is a high desert environment, characterized by rolling hills dotted with juniper trees and sagebrush. Accessing the campground requires a journey on rural roads, with the final stretch being an unimproved dirt road that can be rough and dusty. While a high-clearance vehicle is recommended for a smoother ride, a 4x4 is not typically necessary under good weather conditions. However, it is important to note that the road can become impassable after wet weather, so it's always wise to check conditions before you go.

From Ravendale, travelers will take Lassen County Road 502 for about 12 miles, then turn onto County Road 506 for another 11 miles before a final turn that leads one mile to the campground. This remoteness is a key part of the campground's charm, ensuring that those who make the journey are truly committed to a secluded outdoor experience. The reward for the drive is a peaceful setting far from the crowds.

Services Offered

The BLM Dodge Reservoir Campground offers a no-frills, primitive camping experience. The focus here is on the natural surroundings rather than extensive amenities. It's an opportunity to truly embrace the "pack it in, pack it out" philosophy of wilderness camping. The services you can expect to find include:

  • On-site parking, with spacious sites that can accommodate large RVs and trailers, as well as tents.
  • Vault toilets, with at least one being ADA accessible. These are the only restroom facilities available.
  • Campsites with picnic tables and fire rings, with some sites also featuring grills for cooking.
  • A boat launch provides access to the reservoir for non-motorized and motorized watercraft.

It is crucial to be self-sufficient when visiting this campground. There is no potable water on-site, no trash collection, and no hookups for RVs. Campers must bring all the food and water they will need for their stay, plus extra, and be prepared to pack out all of their waste. This preparation is a small price to pay for the unparalleled solitude and natural beauty of the location.

Features and Highlights

What the BLM Dodge Reservoir Campground lacks in modern amenities, it more than makes up for with its natural features and unique highlights. The serene environment and diverse recreational opportunities are the primary draw for those who visit. Some of the most notable features include:

  • Spectacular Stargazing: This is arguably the most celebrated feature of the campground. With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is breathtaking. Visitors can see a vast expanse of stars, the Milky Way, and other celestial objects with incredible clarity, especially during a new moon. It is a destination perfect for amateur astronomers and anyone who wants to witness the cosmos in all its glory.
  • Excellent Fishing: The Dodge Reservoir is a popular destination for anglers. It is regularly stocked by the California Department of Fish and Game with various trout, including rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout. The best fishing is typically in the spring and early summer when water levels are highest. A valid California fishing license is required.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The high desert habitat is home to a variety of wildlife. Campers might spot mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and a wide array of bird species. The area is also part of the New Ravendale Herd Management Area, and there is a chance of seeing wild horses roaming the nearby hills. Predators such as bobcats, coyotes, and mountain lions also pass through the area.
  • Hiking and Exploration: The rolling hills and open lands surrounding the campground offer plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring. While there are no established trails within the campground itself, visitors can enjoy walking and sightseeing. The area's quiet nature makes it perfect for reflective walks and wildlife photography.
  • Kid-Friendly Environment: While remote, the campground is good for kids who enjoy a rugged outdoor adventure. The open spaces are perfect for play, and the chance to see wildlife and a sky full of stars provides an educational and memorable experience for young campers.
