Big Scrub Campground Introduce
Welcome to Big Scrub Campground, a dynamic and highly sought-after destination nestled deep within the vast and beautiful Ocala National Forest in central Florida. For Floridians who crave adventure, particularly those with off-road vehicles (OHVs), this campground is a true gem. Big Scrub is not just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV; it's a gateway to miles of thrilling trails, pristine natural landscapes, and a vibrant community of outdoor enthusiasts. We understand that for many locals, finding a camping spot that combines tranquility with exciting recreational opportunities is key, and Big Scrub Campground delivers on both fronts.
Perennially popular with ATV, UTV, and dirt bike riders, Big Scrub Campground offers a unique experience where you can ride directly from your campsite to an extensive network of off-road trails. But it’s not just for the thrill-seekers; the campground also provides a peaceful base for those who simply wish to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of one of Florida's most significant national forests. Imagine waking up surrounded by the unique sand pine scrub forest, spending your days exploring hidden corners of the forest, and your evenings under a blanket of stars. Our commitment at Big Scrub Campground is to provide a clean, well-maintained, and welcoming environment where you can truly connect with Florida's wild side. While reviews highlight its primary appeal for OHV enthusiasts, the clean facilities and friendly groundkeepers contribute to a great experience for all campers.
Big Scrub Campground is strategically located at 11990 SE NFR 14, Umatilla, FL 32784, USA, placing it deep within the heart of the Ocala National Forest. This location is paramount to its appeal, offering direct, unparalleled access to a vast network of off-road vehicle trails and stunning natural areas. For Floridians, reaching Big Scrub Campground is a journey into the state's wild interior, typically accessed via State Route 40 and then turning south onto Forest Road 588 (or 14). While the final miles may involve well-maintained dirt roads, the route is generally straightforward for most vehicles and RVs, ensuring that your adventure begins long before you set up camp.
The accessibility of Big Scrub Campground is particularly significant for off-road vehicle enthusiasts, as it provides "campsite-to-trail access" to the extensive 47-mile Ocala Adventure Trail (also known as the Ocala Centennial Trail). This direct access eliminates the need for trailering your OHV to a separate trailhead each day, maximizing your riding time. Beyond the off-road opportunities, the campground's central location in the Ocala National Forest means it's a short drive to other popular natural attractions. For instance, the warm, turquoise waters of Alexander Springs, perfect for swimming, canoeing, and diving, are within easy reach. This combination of deep forest immersion and relatively convenient access from Florida's major population centers makes Big Scrub Campground an ideal destination for locals seeking an authentic and adventurous outdoor experience in their own backyard.

Big Scrub Campground Reviews
Looks like a good campground for ohv. Unfortunately it was not open when we were by there
Mar 04, 2025 · BNGFirst come first serve for every site. Multiple bathhouses in excellent condition and well maintained. Campsites aren’t private and are out in the open, but great experience nonetheless. Groundskeepers are so friendly! Great trails for off-roading!!
Feb 14, 2021 · sydney flaniganHad a great time camping here. Bathrooms are clean and have plenty of warm water. The camp also has a dish washing station we found cool if we were to camp in a tent. The camp ground host were great people. Can’t wait to come out and camp again.
Apr 07, 2023 · Rider ShorterI really enjoyed my time there. It was pretty cold when we were there. But there's so many different springs close to this area. The people at the store was very friendly.
Apr 30, 2025 · Susan ShepherdFound ourselves down a four wheeler trail and got stuck. Oops. But the area is beautiful and plenty of 4x4 trails to have fun on. But if the trucks small enough and you miss the marker you could ended up like us. Made it about 1000ft from the trailhead when we got stuck.
