Big River Rentals is conveniently located at 9 Old Sloan's Rd, Dixon, MT 59831, USA. This places it in the scenic Flathead Valley, a region renowned for its stunning landscapes, agricultural heritage, and, of course, the magnificent Flathead River. Dixon itself is a small, unincorporated community in Sanders County, offering a peaceful rural setting that is still within reasonable driving distance of larger towns like Missoula, which is approximately 44 miles away, and Polson.
One of the most significant aspects of Big River Rentals' location is its direct proximity to the Flathead River. Reviews consistently highlight that the property is "right next to a river for fishing" and offers "riverfront access," with an "easy" walk of "less than a 5-minute walk on a flat slope" to Hoskin's Landing Loop, a prime access point. This makes it an ideal spot for anglers, paddlers, and anyone who enjoys riverside relaxation. Importantly, the property is noted as being "not Rez," meaning it is not located on tribal reservation land, and therefore, "no extra camping fees" (beyond the standard site fee) apply, simplifying the experience for campers. The campground's location also places it conveniently close to other local attractions. The National Bison Range, a major wildlife viewing area, is just 6 miles away. Additionally, a local cantina, owned by Tom's brother John, is "just down the block on Main Street," providing a nearby option for good food and drink. This combination of easy highway access, direct river proximity, and nearby local amenities makes Big River Rentals a very accessible and desirable location for Montanans looking for a convenient yet authentic outdoor experience.
Big River Rentals focuses on providing essential services that enhance a comfortable and hassle-free camping experience, particularly for RVers and those seeking basic amenities:
- Campsites: The campground offers a total of 5 designated campsites. These sites are described as "nice sites" that are "tidy and clean," suggesting a well-maintained environment.
- Power Hookups: Each of the 5 sites comes with power hookups, a crucial amenity for RVs and for powering various camping necessities. This allows campers to run lights, charge devices, and use small appliances.
- Water Hookups: Water hookups are available at each site, providing convenient access to fresh water directly at your campsite. This eliminates the need to fill tanks elsewhere or conserve water as stringently as at more primitive sites.
- No Sewer Hookups: It's noted that there are no sewer hookups directly at the campsites. Campers with RVs will need to utilize external dump stations if available nearby or plan for portable waste management.
- Friendly Owner: The owner, Tom, is frequently praised in reviews for being "really friendly and helpful about the area" and "a very good guy" who will "help you all he can." This personal touch significantly enhances the camping experience.
- Shuttle Service: Tom's brother, John, runs a local shuttle service. This is an invaluable service for those planning float trips on the Flathead River, allowing campers to easily shuttle vehicles or get rides back after their river adventures.
- Nearby Dining: The local cantina, also owned by John, provides a convenient and highly-rated dining option within walking distance, offering "Good food and drink" including burgers and tacos.
- No Reservation System (Implied): While not explicitly stated, the small number of sites and the nature of such a local operation suggest that bookings might be handled directly, rather than through a large online reservation system. It's always best to call ahead.
Big River Rentals offers several key features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for campers, especially for Montanans:
- Direct Flathead River Access: This is arguably the top highlight. The campground's location "100 yards from the Flathead River" with an "easy" and "less than a 5-minute walk" to a boat launch or river access point is a major draw for water enthusiasts.
- Excellent Fishing: The river is described as having "crystal clear water with good smallmouth bass fishing," making it a prime destination for anglers.
- Awesome Scenery: The location along the Flathead River promises "awesome scenery," providing a beautiful backdrop for relaxation and outdoor activities.
- Friendly Local Hospitality: The personal touch from owner Tom and his brother John (who runs the shuttle and local cantina) creates a genuinely welcoming and helpful environment that sets it apart from larger, more impersonal campgrounds.
- Proximity to National Bison Range: Being just 6 miles from the National Bison Range offers a fantastic opportunity for wildlife viewing and a significant educational experience during your stay.
- Local Cantina for Food & Drink: The nearby cantina provides a convenient and highly recommended dining option, offering tasty food and drinks without needing to drive far.
- No Tribal Camping Fees: The fact that the property is "not Rez" means campers don't incur additional tribal recreation or camping fees that might apply on tribal lands, simplifying costs.
- Small and Quiet: With only 5 sites, the campground offers a more intimate and peaceful setting compared to larger, busier parks. While there's "no shade," the tidiness and river access compensate for this.
- Ideal for Floaters: The combination of river access and an on-site (or easily arranged) shuttle service makes it particularly attractive for those planning to float sections of the Flathead River.
