Big Flat Campground

Forks of Salmon, CA 96031, USA

4.0
Rarely ever crowded due to the very long and rough road in from Highway 3, this is a fantastic campground whether you're headed north through the Trinity's, or if you're backpacking out to the Caribou Lakes.Recently came here in fall, when the campground was technically closed, and had a wonderful night. Still a few people about and there was a campground host, never checked to see if the facilities were open.Right on the river, the drive in is gorgeous, but it'll be very long and slow if you're not in a truck or SUV. There isn't anywhere a car can't make it, but it's very rough. Plan for at least 2 hours. - Max Stanton

Big Flat Campground Introduce

For Californians who truly yearn to disconnect from the everyday and immerse themselves in rugged, untouched wilderness, Big Flat Campground near Forks of Salmon, CA, stands out as an exceptional, albeit adventurous, destination. It's a place where the journey itself is part of the experience, promising unparalleled peace for those willing to venture off the beaten path.

Big Flat Campground caters specifically to those with a spirit for true wilderness and a preference for primitive camping. Location and Accessibility

Big Flat Campground is situated at Forks of Salmon, CA 96031, USA. This places it deep within the Klamath National Forest and on the edge of the magnificent Trinity Alps Wilderness, a renowned area for its granite peaks, alpine lakes, and extensive trail system. The campground is specifically located near the South Fork of the Salmon River, offering picturesque riverside access.

However, it is crucial for prospective visitors to understand the significant aspect of its accessibility: "the very long and rough road in from Highway 3." This is a consistent point across multiple reviews, with one advising, "it'll be very long and slow if you're not in a truck or SUV. There isn't anywhere a car can't make it, but it's very rough. Plan for at least 2 hours." This challenging access is precisely why the campground is "Rarely ever crowded." For Californians equipped with high-clearance vehicles like trucks or SUVs, this journey becomes part of the adventure, leading to a secluded paradise. While a standard car might technically make it, the experience would be significantly less comfortable and potentially damaging to the vehicle. The roads are unpaved, likely gravel and dirt, and can be narrow and winding. This deliberate remoteness ensures that only those truly seeking an isolated wilderness experience will arrive, preserving the campground's tranquil atmosphere. The drive, though demanding, is also "gorgeous," offering stunning views as you delve deeper into the forest.
