Big Elk Group Campground Introduce
Nestled in the serene beauty of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, Big Elk Group Campground offers a wonderful escape for anyone seeking a peaceful and natural setting. This campground is a special place, particularly well-suited for larger family reunions or group outings, as its name suggests. However, it also has individual sites available, making it a versatile destination for a variety of campers. The location is truly spectacular, situated along a quiet arm of the stunning Palisades Reservoir, providing a perfect backdrop for a tranquil and restorative trip. It's an ideal spot for those who want to get away from it all and immerse themselves in Idaho's breathtaking mountain landscape.
The reviews from real customers paint a vivid picture of the experience at Big Elk. The most consistent and glowing praise is reserved for the campground hosts, who are described as "the best I have ever encountered." Their dedication to keeping the place "immaculate" is a recurring theme, ensuring that visitors can enjoy a clean and well-maintained environment. This attention to detail, from the spotless bathrooms to the tidy campsites, contributes significantly to the overall positive experience. The peaceful and quiet atmosphere is another major highlight, making it a fantastic retreat from the noise and stress of daily life. The proximity to the reservoir provides a variety of water sports opportunities in a "pristine location," which visitors truly appreciate.
While some reviews do mention challenges, such as a lack of shade in some areas and a "teeth-jarring" road on the way in, these comments are often framed as minor inconveniences in an otherwise "wonderful" location. The difficulty for large RVs to maneuver is a consideration, but for tent campers and smaller groups, the site is described as "great." The campground's natural setting is a highlight, with the potential for stunning views and a direct connection to nature. The presence of a lagoon with good access is another unique feature that adds to the recreational value of the location.
For those who appreciate simple, well-kept camping facilities and a focus on nature, Big Elk Group Campground is an excellent choice. It’s a place where the simple joys of a campfire, a clean restroom, and a beautiful view are more than enough to create a memorable and enjoyable trip.

The campground is situated on a hillside above Big Elk Creek, offering a variety of scenic views.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1It is lacking in shade in most areas. We have a 30 foot RV and it was a crazy struggle to back it in anywhere. The big rocks lining the roadways prevent mauvering that is part of using an RV.It is quiet and peaceful and the campground hosts are the best I have ever encountered. They keep the place emaculate. Many in our family group used tents and for them things were great. The location is so wonderful and if you like water sports in a pristine location, then this place is the best I have ever seen. One thing that could be improved by the forest service is to grade the road coming in. I have never driven a worst 3 mile stretch of road coming in. It does not reflect on the campground itself but "wow" what a teeth jarer.
July 24 · Rick ClementsNot enough bear boxes. No cooking fire pit by the big Pavillion like all the other fire pits.Bathrooms were always clean and smelled fine.Good access to the lagoon
July 07 · Miguel GonzalezSecond year in a row. This is a camping favorite.
May 29 · Elizabeth TillyHidden gem for bird photography. You can watch Osprey fish all day while Bald Eagles try to steal their fish mid air all day. Its open air space so flying a drone safely is phenomenal 🙌
May 08 · Outsider ImagesThis campground is very well maintained and has been newly updated. The surrounding setting is also beautiful.
