Basin Campground

Basin Rd, Chatham, NH 03813, USA

4.0
Spent almost 3 days here. The campground is very well maintained as well as the area around the pond, if you want to swim beware of leeches. I wasn't expecting to loose cell reception but it was a nice respite from technology for the weekend. The bathrooms definitely need work but luckily the porta potties were very clean. - Mike MacBrien

For those of us who cherish the raw beauty and quiet solitude of New Hampshire's White Mountains, there's nothing quite like finding a camping spot that truly lets us disconnect and immerse ourselves in nature. If you're a local seeking a genuine rustic retreat away from the noise and distractions of modern life, then Basin Campground in Chatham is a place that calls your name. Tucked away in a tranquil corner of the White Mountain National Forest, this campground offers a back-to-basics experience that resonates with the spirit of New Hampshire's outdoors.

Basin Campground is named for the nearby 23-acre Basin Pond, a central feature that adds to the campground's serene atmosphere. It’s designed for those who appreciate the simple joys of camping: a crackling campfire, the rustle of leaves, and the vast expanse of a star-filled sky. While it embraces a more primitive style of camping, it’s also known for being very well maintained, particularly the surrounding area of the pond and the campsites themselves.

One of the most defining aspects of Basin Campground is its ability to offer a true digital detox. As many campers have discovered, you’ll lose cell reception here, providing a much-needed respite from technology for the weekend or longer. This allows for a deeper connection with your surroundings and your fellow campers, fostering genuine conversations and uninterrupted enjoyment of nature. This is a huge draw for New Hampshire locals who deliberately seek to unplug and recharge in the wilderness.

The campground hosts a mix of tent-only and standard sites along a single loop, offering a cozy and somewhat intimate feel while still providing a sense of being nestled within the forest. Although recent reviews mention some ongoing plumbing issues with the campground bathrooms, the availability and cleanliness of porta-potties ensure that essential facilities are still accessible. It's a reminder that embracing a rustic experience often means adapting to the natural environment.

Beyond the campsite, Basin Campground is a gateway to extensive outdoor adventures. Its proximity to hiking and mountain biking trails is a major highlight, with the 4.5-mile Basin Trail departing directly from the campground. Basin Pond itself is ideal for non-motorized boating like canoeing and is known for trout fishing. For those brave enough for a cold dip, it offers swimming opportunities, though it's wise to be aware of the natural environment, including the occasional presence of leeches, which are common in many natural ponds.

The area around Basin Campground is home to a diverse array of northern wildlife, including moose, white-tailed deer, and black bear, as well as nearly 200 species of birds. This rich biodiversity enhances the wilderness experience, reminding us of the incredible natural heritage we have right here in New Hampshire. If you're looking for a quiet, immersive camping experience where nature takes center stage, Basin Campground offers a truly authentic New Hampshire escape.

Basin Campground is situated at Basin Rd, Chatham, NH 03813, USA, placing it within the picturesque White Mountain National Forest. This location is particularly beneficial for New Hampshire locals, as it's nestled in the eastern reaches of the forest, providing a sense of remoteness while remaining accessible for a weekend or longer getaway.

The campground is approximately 15 miles north of Fryeburg, Maine, and can be accessed via scenic routes through the mountains. For those driving from major New Hampshire cities, the journey offers a beautiful introduction to the region's natural splendor. For instance, from Concord, the drive is roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. From Manchester, you can expect a drive of about 2 to 2.5 hours, and from Portsmouth, approximately 2 hours. These travel times make Basin Campground a convenient escape for many New Hampshire residents seeking to immerse themselves in nature.

It's important to note that due to its location deep within the national forest, cell reception at the campground is generally non-existent. This lack of connectivity is a deliberate feature for many who choose this campground, allowing for a complete digital detox. While this enhances the feeling of being "off the grid," it also means campers should come prepared with all necessary maps and information downloaded or printed in advance, as online navigation won't be reliable on site.

Despite its secluded feel, the campground is strategically located to offer access to a wealth of outdoor activities. It's just a short distance from the famous Evans Notch, which leads to numerous hiking trails. The town of Fryeburg, Maine, is also relatively close by, providing essential services like groceries, restaurants, and gas if needed for resupply. This balance of remote tranquility and proximity to necessary amenities makes Basin Campground an ideal spot for locals who value both wilderness immersion and practical accessibility.

Basin Campground provides essential services designed to facilitate a rustic, self-reliant camping experience within the White Mountain National Forest.

  • Campsites: The campground offers 21 sites in total, with 13 of these being reservable through Recreation.gov. Sites accommodate a mix of tent-only camping and standard sites for RVs/trailers (up to 25-40 feet for some sites). Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill for cooking.
  • Restrooms: The campground provides accessible restrooms with flush toilets and sinks. However, it's important to note recent visitor feedback indicating that these facilities have sometimes experienced plumbing issues. In such cases, very clean porta-potties are typically made available to ensure campers have access to necessary facilities. Campers are advised to bring their own soap.
  • Water Access: Potable drinking water is available via outdoor faucets within the campground.
  • Firewood Sales: While specific details on direct sales at the campground office might vary, many national forest campgrounds offer firewood for purchase, often on an honor system. It's always best practice to purchase local firewood to prevent the spread of invasive species.
  • Boat Launch: A boat launch is available at Basin Pond, specifically for non-motorized boats like canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards.
  • Pet-Friendly: Pets are allowed at Basin Campground, with a limit of two pets per site. They must be kept on a leash at all times.
  • Bear-Aware Protocols: While not a service in the traditional sense, the campground emphasizes and encourages "bear aware" practices. Campers are required to store all food and scented items in approved containers or locked inside a hard-sided vehicle to mitigate bear encounters.
  • No Showers or Dump Station: Campers should be aware that Basin Campground does not provide showers or a dump station for RVs. This aligns with its primitive nature.

Basin Campground boasts several key features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for New Hampshire locals seeking an authentic outdoor adventure.

  • Tranquil Pondside Location: Situated directly near the beautiful 23-acre Basin Pond, the campground offers stunning views and immediate access to calm waters. This provides opportunities for canoeing, fishing (trout fishing is popular), and even swimming (though caution is advised regarding leeches common in natural ponds).
  • Digital Detox Environment: A significant highlight for many, the lack of cell reception at the campground allows for a complete escape from screens and digital distractions, fostering a deeper connection with nature and fellow campers. This is a much-needed "respite from technology."
  • Extensive Hiking Opportunities: The campground serves as an excellent base for hikers. The 4.5-mile Basin Trail starts right from the campground, leading to impressive destinations like Hermit Falls and viewpoints on the Basin Rim Trail. Numerous other hiking and mountain biking trails in Evans Notch and the wider White Mountain National Forest are within a short drive.
  • Well-Maintained Natural Setting: Despite its rustic nature, the campground and the area around the pond are described as very well maintained, ensuring a pleasant and clean environment for campers.
  • Secluded Forest Sites: The sites are nestled within a pleasant mixed hardwood forest, offering a good degree of privacy and a true sense of being immersed in the woods.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The surrounding White Mountain National Forest is home to abundant wildlife, including moose, white-tailed deer, and black bear, as well as nearly 200 bird species, providing opportunities for nature observation.
  • Proximity to Scenic Drives: The drive to Basin Campground itself is considered beautiful, setting the tone for a relaxing and scenic getaway within the White Mountains.
  • Mix of Reservable and First-Come Sites: While 13 of the 21 sites are reservable via Recreation.gov, allowing for planning, the remaining sites are typically first-come, first-served, offering flexibility for spontaneous trips.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each site is equipped with essential camping amenities like a picnic table and a fire pit with a grill, making meal preparation and campfire enjoyment easy.

Basin Campground, managed by the White Mountain National Forest, operates on a standard fee structure rather than frequent promotional offers in the commercial sense. The value it provides lies in its unique natural setting and the authentic wilderness experience it delivers at an accessible price.

Current (and typical) fees are as follows:

  • Single Family Site: $30.00 per site, per night. This fee usually covers one vehicle.
  • Extra Vehicle: An additional $6.00 per vehicle, per night (space permitting).

Reservations for 13 of the campground's 21 sites can be made online through Recreation.gov or by calling their toll-free number (1-877-444-6777). It's advisable to book well in advance, especially during peak season (mid-May through October), as popular sites fill up quickly. For the remaining first-come, first-served sites, arriving early in the day is recommended to secure a spot.

While there aren't seasonal sales or discount codes, the campground adheres to the White Mountain National Forest's fee structure, which aims to provide affordable access to public lands. Any New Hampshire resident aged 65 or older may be eligible for a senior discount on state park campgrounds, though specifics should be confirmed directly with Recreation.gov or the forest service, as policies can vary. The true "promotion" for Basin Campground is the opportunity to experience a well-maintained, secluded, and natural environment in the stunning White Mountains at a reasonable cost, contributing directly to the upkeep of our precious national forest lands.
