Back Ridge Shadows, LLC is strategically located at 5851 Sawmill Run Rd, Circleville, WV 26804, USA. This address places it deep within the embrace of the Monongahela National Forest, a vast expanse of protected wilderness renowned for its rugged beauty, diverse ecosystems, and countless recreational opportunities. For West Virginia locals, this location is incredibly appealing as it offers a true mountain escape without requiring extensive travel outside our beautiful state. Circleville itself is a small, charming community in Pendleton County, known for its proximity to some of the highest peaks in West Virginia.
The campground's direct proximity to key natural landmarks is a major draw. It’s incredibly close to both Spruce Knob Overlook and Spruce Knob Lake. Spruce Knob, at 4,863 feet, is the highest point in West Virginia, offering panoramic views that stretch for miles across the Allegheny Mountains. The lake provides opportunities for fishing and peaceful reflection. This means campers at Back Ridge Shadows have immediate access to world-class hiking, fishing, birdwatching, and scenic drives right on their doorstep, embodying the very best of West Virginia's outdoor offerings.
While the location promises seclusion and stunning views, it’s important for visitors to be aware of the nature of accessing a genuine mountain campground. As noted by previous campers, the road leading up to Back Ridge Shadows can be narrow. However, the community and other drivers in the area are known to be patient and accommodating, making room for larger vehicles like RVs. This speaks to the friendly and supportive nature often found in our rural West Virginia communities.
It's also worth noting that, given its remote mountain setting, cell phone service in this entire area can be very weak. This is a common characteristic of truly wild areas in West Virginia and is often seen as a benefit by those seeking a digital detox. It encourages campers to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in their surroundings. Visitors should plan accordingly by downloading any music or entertainment they desire before arriving. For essential supplies like ice, local establishments such as D&K Dairy Bar or the Sunoco station in Circleville are conveniently located nearby, ensuring that campers can easily re-stock necessities during their stay. This blend of remote tranquility with practical local amenities makes Back Ridge Shadows an ideal and accessible choice for West Virginia adventurers.

Back Ridge Shadows, LLC Reviews
April 19-16th 2025: the views and the serenity! Eber is a great, friendly host- He and I spent about an hour chatting one evening. If you are looking for an RV or tent site that's actually on the mountains, contact these folks. We brought our 33' travel trailer up the mountain and stayed in site 5 with full hookup. The folks on the narrow road up/down the mountain were patient to make room for us and we had a wonderful time exploring the Monongahela National Forest.
Apr 19, 2025 · Barnes & CompanyThe host was great and very responsive to our questions via text. Firewood is available for purchase. Water spigot is available for tent campers. Small restrooms available for tent campers as well. This entire area has very weak cell phone service, so if you want to listen to music, make sure you have it downloaded on your phone before you go. Very close to Spruce knob overlook and spruce knob lake. If you need ice, D&K diary bar is not too far away. If they are closed, the Sunoco station in Circleville also has it. One thing I will add, though, if the tent camping area is fully booked, I can see it being pretty crowded. Maybe ask the host how busy it is and take that into consideration.
Apr 16, 2025 · Wesley SloanWhen summer's heat is a misery, go to Back Ridge Shadows! It was 100 degrees in the valley on the day we arrived, but it was a pleasant, somewhat breezy 85 degrees at Back Ridge Shadows, due to the 4,000 foot elevation of this campground. As I write this review, most of Sawmill Run Road, the shortest access road from highway 28, is being paved. Eber, the proprietor, is attentive and concerned that his residents have a pleasant stay. Our campsite was mostly shaded and exposed to the full sun for only about two hours per day. It was very quiet and peaceful at Back Ridge Shadows. There is very little traffic on the road past the campground, and the sounds of wildlife in the woods were quite noticeable. It is a small, quiet and highly secluded campground that is extremely satisfactory for those who want to experience the sounds and presence of nature.
Jul 23, 2024 · Richard ThomasHad a wonderful 3 night stay tent camping here in early October. The owners were so attentive and helpful and checked in every evening (but not obtrusive). Easy access to electric and water spigot. The pit toilets were as pleasant as pit toilets can be (toilet paper was provided which is very nice). Great big picnic table was near our site and fire pit that you could move around were great. Very peaceful and the leaves were beginning to change. Would definitely camp here again if in the area.
Oct 10, 2023 · Karen MossWe had a wonderful stay at back ridge shadows. The campsite and the facilities (the restrooms) are very well maintained. There’s firewood and ice available at the site. Each tent site is also equipped with an electrical power outlet which was really convenient for us.Most importantly, the campsite’s host Eber was so warm, welcoming and kind to us. We’re thankful that we got to stay here and get to know Eber.
