Camped here recently and loved it! The staff were friendly and helpful, the sites were large and well-spaced and the area has lots of places to explore and fish. The bathrooms could use a repaint but they were campground-clean (also, they hadn’t turned the hot water on yet). The site and proximity of the river outweighs my negative comments about the restrooms and I hold firm on 5 stars. - SAM DUCHARME

Features / Highlights

Austin Hawes Campground stands out with several key features that make it a highly desirable destination for campers in Connecticut, particularly those who appreciate a more natural and activity-focused experience.

  • Direct Access to Farmington River: This is arguably the biggest highlight. The campground is situated directly on the West Branch of the Farmington River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic River. This provides world-class opportunities for fly fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. Many sites offer close proximity to the river, allowing for easy access.
  • Spacious and Private Campsites: Reviews consistently mention that the sites are "large and well-spaced" and offer "lots of privacy," contributing to a peaceful camping experience. The sites are wooded, providing natural shade and a sense of being immersed in the forest.
  • Extensive Hiking Opportunities: Located within American Legion State Forest and directly across from People's State Forest, the campground is a gateway to over 14 miles of hiking trails. These trails wind through rugged forest, past historic mill sites, and offer scenic overlooks of the Farmington River, including the popular Henry Buck Trail.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a Connecticut State Forest Campground, Austin Hawes Campground primarily operates under fixed state park fee structures rather than offering frequent commercial promotions or special offers. The daily rates are set by the state and typically include a resident and non-resident price.

However, certain financial considerations and booking advantages apply:

  • Connecticut Resident Rates: Connecticut residents receive a discounted rate compared to non-residents for both campsites and cabin rentals. For example, a resident campsite might be $17/night, while a non-resident site is $27/night. Cabin rates also reflect this difference ($50 resident vs. $60 non-resident).
  • Seasonal Operation: The camping season runs from mid-April to Columbus Day. Early season (before water is turned on) may be designated as rustic camping only, potentially impacting the perceived value for some.
  • Reservation System: Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through Reserve America, which is highly recommended, especially during peak season, to secure desired sites or cabins. A processing fee applies to reservations.
  • No Walk-ins in 2020: While historical, it's worth noting that walk-ins were not accepted in 2020, emphasizing the importance of reservations. Always check current DEEP policies for walk-in availability.

The best "promotion" for Connecticut locals is the inherent value of affordable state park camping combined with the natural resources available. For the most current fee schedule and booking information, it is always best to visit the Connecticut State Parks official reservation website or contact the campground directly.
