It's a place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in nature, whether you're swimming in the cool river waters, paddling along its serene currents, or simply enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Ausable River Camping Site 82 is located on Old Bissonette Rd, Oscoda Township, MI 48750, USA. This address places it squarely in a beautiful and somewhat secluded area along the famous Ausable River, known for its pristine waters and diverse recreational offerings. Oscoda Township itself is situated on the shores of Lake Huron in Northeastern Michigan, a region celebrated for its natural beauty, including vast forests and numerous waterways.
For Michigan residents, accessing this rustic gem means heading into the scenic northern reaches of the Lower Peninsula. While the site offers a feeling of remoteness, it's still within a manageable driving distance for many across the state, particularly those coming from Central and Eastern Michigan. It's important to note that as a rustic site, the approach to the campsite itself might be less developed than larger, more commercial campgrounds, which is part of its charm for those seeking a truly immersive natural experience. Detailed navigation via GPS or local maps is always recommended when heading to such unique locations.
As a rustic camping site, Ausable River Camping Site 82 focuses on providing a natural, undeveloped camping experience. This means the amenities are minimal, emphasizing self-sufficiency and an appreciation for the outdoors in its most untouched form. While traditional campground services like electricity, water hookups, or dedicated restroom buildings are not available, the core "services" it offers are inherent to its nature as a primitive site.
- Designated Campsite: A specific, albeit rustic, area for setting up tents and enjoying the immediate surroundings.
- River Access: Direct and immediate access to the Ausable River for swimming, kayaking, and other water-based activities. This is a primary draw and a key "service" of the location.
- Scenic Views: The "amazing view" of the river is a constant feature, enhancing the camping experience.
- Peace and Quiet: The absence of typical campground noise and activity provides profound "peace and quiet," allowing for true relaxation and connection with nature.
- Cell Service (Limited): While not a formal service, some visitors reported "2-3 bars of service on the peak of the site," which can be a valuable, albeit unreliable, modern amenity in a rustic setting.
The unique appeal of Ausable River Camping Site 82 lies in its distinctive characteristics, which attract campers looking for a particular kind of outdoor adventure. These highlights are drawn directly from the experiences of real visitors.
- Stunning River Views: A consistent highlight, with visitors praising the "Amazing view, and the river is beautiful." The picturesque setting is a primary reason to visit.
- Excellent Water Activities: Ideal for "swimming and kayaking a lot!" The river provides ample opportunity for aquatic recreation directly from the campsite.
- Rustic and Peaceful Environment: Characterized by "peace and quiet," this site offers a true escape from developed areas, appealing to those who prefer a less commercialized camping experience.
- Challenging River Access: While a highlight for its proximity, accessing the river involves a "very treacherous" and "difficult" descent down a "45° to 60° grade of completely loose sand," described as "like trying to climb a treadmill that's free rolling." This feature appeals to adventurous campers prepared for physical exertion.
- "Sticky" Sand: Be prepared for the site's "extra sticky sand does get EVERYWHERE" and can turn into "muddy sand" on rainy days. This is a practical highlight that speaks to the raw, natural terrain.
- Off-Grid Experience: The absence of "no bathrooms, power" reinforces its rustic nature, appealing to campers seeking a true wilderness feel.
- Wildlife Encounters: While not always a positive, the presence of "some dogs running around... No collars. They didn't seem mean but not too friendly either" indicates the wilder aspect of the area.
As a rustic site managed perhaps by a local or state park system, direct contact information beyond the physical address might not be readily available for individual site reservations in the same way as a private campground. However, for general inquiries about the Ausable River State Forest or similar rustic camping permits, visitors would typically contact the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or consult their official websites. Since no phone number was provided, direct inquiry regarding this specific site would likely involve navigating the DNR's resources for state forest campgrounds.

Ausable River Camping Site 82 Reviews
Amazing view, and the river is beautiful. Went swimming and kayaking a lot! We loved staying here. The other review is correct, the hill is easy on the way down and terribly hard on the way up. Our young children made it up and down several times, the youngest with some tears. Also true, the sand here is extra sticky and does get EVERYWHERE.There were some dogs running around on the 3rd day we were here. No collars. They didn't seem mean but not too friendly either.Definitely worth it for the beautiful view and peace and quiet of this rustic campsite!
Jun 22, 2025 · Eden McConnachieThe site itself is very sandy, we packed up on a rainy day and everything we had at the site was muddy sand, it got everywhere. The trek down to the water was very treacherous and was difficult even for our group of mid 20s campers. It's about a 45° to 60° grade of completely loose sand. It's like trying to climb a treadmill that's free rolling. No bathrooms, power, but 2-3 bars of service on the peak of the site
