Atkinson Flat Campground Introduce
For those in Washington seeking an exceptionally beautiful and truly immersive wilderness camping experience, Atkinson Flat Campground near Leavenworth offers an unforgettable retreat. This isn't a bustling resort, but rather a hidden gem that prioritizes direct connection with nature's raw beauty. Nestled along the majestic Chiwawa River within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Atkinson Flat provides a serene and picturesque backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. It's a place where the grandeur of the river and the surrounding forest command attention, offering a profound sense of peace and natural wonder.
Imagine waking to the sight of deer grazing nearby, with the vibrant Chiwawa River stretching out before you, creating a truly spectacular 180-degree view, especially from favored sites like #4. While the river's swift current and cold temperatures demand respect and caution, its beauty is undeniable. This campground appeals to campers who are prepared for a rustic experience and embrace the natural challenges, such as the notably active mosquito population. Despite this, visitors consistently rate it as "very beautiful and worth it," highlighting the unparalleled natural setting that outweighs any minor inconveniences. Atkinson Flat Campground delivers an authentic taste of the Pacific Northwest wilderness, making it a beloved spot for those seeking genuine outdoor adventures and breathtaking scenery.
Atkinson Flat Campground is located in Leavenworth, WA 98826, USA, specifically along the Chiwawa River Road (Forest Road 6200). Its precise location is approximately 16 to 20 miles up the Chiwawa River Road from its junction with Highway 209 (Chiwawa Loop Road), placing it deep within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. For Washington residents, accessing Leavenworth is typically done via US-2, a major east-west highway. From Leavenworth, the journey to Atkinson Flat involves a drive on forest service roads. The final portion of this road, after the 11-mile point, is described as "very rough gravel / dirt," and "may not be suitable for low clearance vehicles." This means that while accessible, a vehicle with higher clearance is advisable for a more comfortable journey.
The drive itself is part of the experience, offering scenic views as you wind through the forest and along the Chiwawa River. The remote nature of the campground implies limited to no cellular service, encouraging a true digital detox. This intentional disconnection allows campers to fully immerse themselves in the natural environment. Its position along the Chiwawa River provides direct river access, although visitors are strongly cautioned about the river's extremely cold and fast-moving waters, with a notable log jam downstream that poses a serious hazard for any kind of floating craft. This combination of remote beauty, adventurous access, and necessary safety awareness defines the unique experience at Atkinson Flat Campground.
As a U.S. Forest Service campground, Atkinson Flat Campground offers essential amenities typical of a more primitive camping experience, focusing on facilitating a comfortable stay while preserving the natural environment. It's crucial for visitors to be aware of what is provided and what they need to bring themselves.

Atkinson Flat Campground Reviews
Most beautiful place to camp. Atkinson Flatts #4 has an amazing 180 degree view of the river. A lot of deer, too.It does have A LOT of mosquitoes. We had three candles going and 40% deet bug spray and we still got bit.The river is extremely cold and very fast, do not underestimate its power. Just around the bend is a huge natural log jam that canoes, kayaks or floats don’t make it through.Overall, very beautiful and worth it.
Jun 30, 2020 · Sarah WeberNice little campground near the river. Only one spot on river. Primitive facilities.
Jan 02, 2024 · Mark LeiboldBeautiful area and river. Took my family up during the week, and was harrassed by a group weirdos hiding in the woods during the night. Making war whoops around my truck in the brush ( in the dark) to the point me and my family (plus four small kids) felt threatened for our safety and had to get the chelan county police to escort us back to camp to pack up and drive 4 hours home in the middle of the night. Contacted the ranger for that area and was disappointed at the lack of concern for the situation. Ranger mentioned it could of been researchers studying owls in the area....really???? The 911 dispatcher in Leavenworth also confirmed she has heard of similar harrassment in that area as well. Beautiful area, that being said be aware of people like these up there! Would hate for anyone to go what we went through, stay safe.
