Aspen Campground

Walden, CO 80480, USA

3.0
A great place to spend the night if you're passing through. The vault toilet is brand new in 2021. Each spot is fairly private. It has trash service. There are seven camping sites. The campground also has a water pump but the water came out rusty looking. It's a rustic campground not a lot of room for large rigs for sure. I would give it five stars but for the water. If you continue down FR 740 you'll find copious amounts of dispersed camping and another little campground that was right by the creek. But cell service drops off shortly past Aspen Campgrounds. - Dave Lalande

Aspen Campground Introduce

For Colorado locals who appreciate a quiet, rustic retreat amidst the state's incredible natural beauty, Aspen Campground near Walden offers an inviting and authentic camping experience. This charming Forest Service campground provides a peaceful base for exploring the vast North Park region, known for its abundant wildlife, excellent fishing, and extensive outdoor recreation opportunities. Unlike larger, more developed campgrounds, Aspen Campground embraces simplicity and privacy, making it an ideal choice for those who value solitude and a true connection with the Colorado wilderness. Our aim with this article is to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Aspen Campground, highlighting its distinct features, practical amenities, and why it stands out as an excellent option for your next outdoor adventure, tailored specifically for the perspective of local Colorado residents.

Aspen Campground is located in Walden, CO 80480, USA, situated within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests & Thunder Basin National Grassland. More specifically, it is approximately 22 miles southeast of Walden, near Gould, adjacent to the South Fork of the Michigan River. This strategic location places it within North Park, a high-altitude basin renowned for its expansive meadows, towering peaks, and significant wildlife populations, especially moose. For Colorado residents, accessing Aspen Campground typically involves a scenic drive on well-maintained roads, though some sections might be unpaved Forest Service routes. One reviewer notes that if you continue down FR 740, you'll find "copious amounts of dispersed camping and another little campground that was right by the creek," indicating the rich network of outdoor access points in the vicinity. This blend of managed campsites and nearby dispersed options offers flexibility for different camping styles. While the campground feels wonderfully remote, its proximity to Walden ensures that essential supplies are within reach. It's important to note that cell service can be spotty past Aspen Campground on FR 740, which, for many seeking a true escape, is more of a feature than a drawback. This accessible yet secluded location makes it a prime choice for Coloradans looking to immerse themselves in the state's less-traveled, yet equally stunning, natural areas.

Aspen Campground offers a straightforward and rustic set of services, focusing on providing essential amenities for a comfortable, self-sufficient camping experience. It's designed for those who appreciate simplicity and the natural environment.

  • Individual Campsites: The campground features seven designated camping sites, each offering a degree of privacy. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring/grate.
  • Vault Toilets: The campground provides vault toilets, with one reviewer noting that the "vault toilet is brand new in 2021," indicating a commitment to maintaining clean and functional basic facilities.
  • Trash Service: Unlike many primitive campgrounds, Aspen Campground offers "trash service," a convenient amenity that helps campers practice Leave No Trace principles more easily.
  • Water Pump: A hand-pumped water source is available. However, a past review mentions that "the water came out rusty looking," indicating that campers should be prepared to filter or purify any water obtained from this source, or bring their own potable water.
  • No Hookups: It's important for campers to note that there are no water, electrical, or sewer hookups available, making it suitable for tent camping and smaller RVs (maximum trailer length is typically 20 feet).
  • Payment Envelopes: One review mentioned being "Out of payment envelopes," suggesting a self-pay system is in place, so campers should be prepared with exact cash or checks.

Aspen Campground is cherished by Colorado locals for several key features and highlights that define its unique appeal as a quiet, natural retreat.

  • Fairly Private Campsites: Reviewers highlight that "Each spot is fairly private." This is a significant advantage for those seeking solitude and a personal space in nature, avoiding the crowded feeling of some larger campgrounds.
  • Rustic and Peaceful Atmosphere: Described as a "rustic campground," it offers a serene environment, ideal for those looking to disconnect from urban noise and enjoy the quiet sounds of the forest.
  • Proximity to Dispersed Camping: A notable highlight is the availability of "copious amounts of dispersed camping" further down FR 740. This provides flexibility for campers who might prefer an even more primitive experience or if the campground is full.
  • Moose Territory: Located in North Park, the area is renowned as prime moose territory. Sightings are common, especially during early and late seasons, offering incredible wildlife viewing opportunities for campers.
  • Access to Outdoor Activities: While recreation within the immediate campground is limited, the surrounding area offers access to hiking and fishing. The campground is also adjacent to the South Fork of the Michigan River, providing fishing opportunities.
  • Good for Smaller Rigs/Tent Camping: The rustic nature and limited space make it less suitable for "large rigs," but ideal for tent campers and smaller trailers (up to 20 feet), catering to a specific type of outdoor enthusiast.
  • Maintained Facilities (Vault Toilet): The updated vault toilet in 2021 demonstrates some level of facility maintenance, which is a positive for basic comfort in a rustic setting.
