Whether you're a seasoned overlander or a determined car camper, the rewards of reaching Alta Lakes are immense, promising unforgettable memories and unparalleled views that truly capture the spirit of the Rocky Mountains.
Alta Lakes Campground (Dispersed) is nestled at Alta Lakes Rd, Telluride, CO 81435, USA. This puts it in a prime location within the stunning San Juan Mountains, renowned for their dramatic peaks, historical mining towns, and abundant recreational opportunities. The campground is situated near the intriguing Alta Ghost Town, adding a unique historical dimension to your camping experience.
Accessibility to Alta Lakes is a key consideration for visitors. The road leading to the campground is often described as challenging, particularly for vehicles without sufficient clearance or 4x4 capabilities. While some adventurous souls have managed to reach the ghost town (less than a mile from the lakes) in 2WD camper vans when the road is dry and they have good clearance, it's generally recommended that you have a 4x4 vehicle for a smoother and safer journey, especially if you plan to go all the way to the lakes. Factors like recent weather, particularly snowmelt, can significantly impact road conditions. As one review noted, even in late May, snow can still block access to the lakes themselves, requiring a hike the rest of the way. It’s always advisable to check current road conditions before attempting the drive, as the mountain environment can change rapidly. Despite the potential for a rugged drive, the incredible views and serene setting make the journey well worth the effort for those prepared for it.
- Dispersed camping: This means there are no designated campsites with amenities like picnic tables or fire rings. Campers are expected to practice Leave No Trace principles, packing out everything they pack in.

- Incredible views: While not a service in the traditional sense, the panoramic mountain vistas and pristine lake views are a primary offering of this location.
- Cellular network connection: Surprisingly, some areas around Alta Lakes offer good network connectivity, which can be a relief for those who need to stay connected or for emergency purposes, though it should not be relied upon consistently in the wilderness.
- Stunning natural beauty: The unparalleled views of the San Juan Mountains and the serene alpine lakes are the undeniable star attractions of Alta Lakes. It's a photographer's dream and a nature lover's paradise.
- High-altitude experience: Camping at Alta Lakes offers a true high-altitude experience, which means cooler temperatures even in summer and the opportunity to experience unique alpine ecosystems.
- Proximity to Alta Ghost Town: The historical Alta Ghost Town is just a short distance away, providing a fascinating opportunity to explore relics of Colorado's mining past and adding a unique cultural element to your trip.
- Challenging but rewarding access: The road to Alta Lakes is often described as challenging, requiring good vehicle clearance or 4x4, especially after inclement weather or during spring runoff. However, successfully navigating the road adds to the sense of adventure and makes the destination feel even more rewarding.
- Hiking opportunities: The area around Alta Lakes is rich with hiking trails, offering everything from easy strolls around the lakes to more challenging treks into the surrounding mountains. Even when parts of the road are snow-covered, the hike to the lakes is described as fantastic.
- Spaced-out campsites: While some campsites might be a bit closer than desired in certain sections, there are generally multiple areas to find a spot, and with careful selection, you can often find a relatively private and peaceful setting.
- Dog-friendly environment: It’s a popular spot for dog owners, emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership, particularly regarding waste disposal, to maintain the pristine environment.

We made it to the ghost town with our camper van which is not 4x4. It’s less than a mile away from the lakes. The road is alright when dry if you have enough clearance. Otherwise 4x4 only. We kinda just went for it and made it! We did attempt to go up to the lakes but there was still snow on the road (end of May) so we backed down and camped at this incredible viewpoint. That was a good decision as the next day we hiked to the lakes and there was still lots of snow and not easy to walk even. The place is fantastic. And the network connection works really well up here! (Surprise surprise) 🏔️
Jun 01, 2025 · Yokata JaneWe had an amazing time. The views and trails are beautiful. The campsites were a little closer together than I would like, but we had the perfect one. If you bring a dog please do not leave your poo bags laying around. We saw several bags around the campground.

Jul 04, 2025 · Melissa BaynesThe amount of trash and broken glass here is astounding. I’ve already thrown away many handfuls. The most I have ever seen outside a recycling bin. It’s hard to attempt to pickup the glass as it becomes a never ending endeavor. Easy to see why the forest service (somewhat) cracked down on the area. Real shame for such a beautiful spot. There are nice trials over the hill to the resort but they are not on many apps. I found them via exploration.
Aug 28, 2024 · Kyle PaytonInto driving a dirt road for miles up the mountain? How about lots of pot holes, ruts, rocks, twists and turns?! Want beautiful scenery too? Then Alta Lakes is for you!!! After we made it to the top we discovered the campground was almost full…but we found a nice spot on top of a hill. Make sure you come early enough in the day to claim your spot! The lake is beautiful and when it’s dark the sky is bursting with stars! Perfect for a campfire!:) one warning…. Since it’s high altitude-11,000 ft approx. prepare for altitude sickness if your sensitive to it!
