Albion Basin Campground Introduce
Welcome to Albion Basin Campground, a truly beautiful and serene alpine retreat nestled high in Little Cottonwood Canyon near Alta, Utah. This campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it's a destination that promises an unforgettable mountain experience. Known for its breathtaking scenery and tranquil atmosphere, Albion Basin Campground is the perfect escape for those looking to immerse themselves in nature. Situated at a high elevation, it offers a refreshing change from the valley's heat, with cooler temperatures and an authentic mountain atmosphere. It is a quiet and well-maintained spot that serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring one of Utah's most picturesque canyons.
The campground has a reputation for being consistently "beautiful" and "quiet," with each site thoughtfully equipped to provide a comfortable stay. As a visitor noted, each site has a plastic-dipped metal picnic table, a fire ring, and a parking pad, all on a packed gravel and tree needle base, which minimizes mud. The emphasis here is on a rustic, back-to-basics experience that prioritizes the natural surroundings. One of the unique highlights mentioned by a guest is the unexpected quality of the pit toilets, which are housed in modern buildings, do not smell, and are even made more pleasant with scented candles at night by the camp host. This attention to detail speaks to the care put into maintaining the campground. It is a place where families can enjoy the outdoors together, with a rating of being "good for kids" and offering "kid-friendly hikes" nearby.
Albion Basin Campground is located on Albion Basin Rd in Alta, UT 84092, USA. Its prime location places it deep within Little Cottonwood Canyon, a well-known and highly-trafficked area for outdoor recreation. The campground is situated on a road that is a continuation of the main canyon road, winding past the Alta ski resort. While the access road is a beautiful drive, visitors should be aware that it can be rough in spots, with "rills and washouts," as mentioned in a review. The road to the campground is typically open to the public during the summer months and is a key access point for the Albion Basin and Cecret Lake trailheads.
The accessibility of this high-elevation campground is generally good, but visitors should drive slowly and cautiously due to the road conditions. While smaller campers and trailers may be able to navigate the road, it is not recommended for larger RVs, as the narrow and uneven roads within the loop can be difficult to maneuver. The on-site parking at each campsite is a great convenience, but campers should be prepared for a tight fit if they have a large vehicle. The campground's location provides a sense of seclusion and wilderness while still being relatively close to the small town of Alta and the city of Salt Lake, offering a perfect balance of escape and convenience.
Albion Basin Campground provides a set of essential services and amenities that support a comfortable and traditional tent camping experience.
Public Restrooms: The campground is equipped with public restrooms, specifically vault toilets, which are noted by a reviewer as being exceptionally clean and well-maintained. They are housed in modern buildings and, in a unique touch, have a pleasant scent, which is a rare but welcome feature for this type of facility.
Running Water: Running water is available at the campground, which is a crucial convenience for campers. This allows for easy access to drinking water and a way to wash hands and dishes, eliminating the need to pack in large quantities of water.
Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a plastic-dipped metal picnic table, providing a durable and clean surface for food preparation, dining, and other activities.
Tent Sites: The campground is primarily set up for tent camping. The sites have a packed gravel and tree needle base, which provides a solid surface for pitching a tent and helps prevent mud, even in wet conditions.
These amenities are basic but functional, providing all the necessary comforts for an enjoyable stay in a rustic setting.
Albion Basin Campground is highlighted by several key features that make it a compelling choice for outdoor enthusiasts.
World-Class Hiking: This is arguably the biggest highlight. The campground is the starting point for some of Utah's most famous and beautiful hikes. The Cecret Lake trail, in particular, is a popular destination that is known for its stunning wildflowers in early summer. As one reviewer mentioned, the hike is "not too hard, a bit steep in some spots, but still really nice," with a "beautiful" lake at the end.
Beautiful Scenery and Wildflowers: The scenery is simply breathtaking. In early summer, the entire basin is known for its spectacular display of wildflowers, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers. The high alpine environment, with its lush vegetation and stunning mountain views, is a key draw.
Good for Kids and Kid-Friendly Hikes: The campground is noted as "good for kids" and offers "kid-friendly hikes." The nature-rich environment provides a fantastic outdoor classroom, and the hikes, such as the one to Cecret Lake, are manageable and rewarding for families with children.
Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: For those looking to escape the noise and crowds, this campground offers a quiet and peaceful environment. The limited number of sites and the focus on tent camping contribute to a more serene atmosphere.
Wildlife: Visitors should be aware of the "cute little squirrels," but they are also part of the charm. The presence of wildlife adds to the authentic mountain experience, though campers should be prepared for creatures like squirrels that may drop pinecones on their tents.

Choosing Albion Basin Campground for your next trip is a decision that promises a truly unforgettable outdoor experience. What makes it particularly worth choosing is its unbeatable location and the genuine alpine experience it offers. You are not just camping; you are setting up a basecamp for a world-class adventure in one of Utah's most beautiful canyons. The proximity to the Cecret Lake hike and the breathtaking wildflower displays in the summer are a huge draw and a major reason why this place is so beloved. The fact that the campground is designed for a rustic experience, with clean and well-maintained essential amenities like the surprisingly nice restrooms, means you get the best of both worlds: a back-to-basics feel with a level of comfort that is often a deciding factor.
Furthermore, the campground is a fantastic choice for families. The "good for kids" and "kid-friendly hikes" designations ensure that even the youngest members of your group will have a fun and engaging trip. The natural playground provided by the streams, trees, and trails is a perfect setting for children to learn and explore. While the road to the campground requires slow and careful driving, and it is not suitable for large RVs, this is a small price to pay for the seclusion and natural beauty that await you. All these factors—the stunning scenery, the access to premier hiking, the family-friendly atmosphere, and the clean, functional amenities—make Albion Basin Campground an excellent choice for a refreshing and memorable trip in the heart of Utah’s mountains.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Beautiful, quiet campground. Each site has a plastic dipped metal picnic table, a fire ring, and a parking pad. The ground is packed gravel and tree needles, so not much chance of mud. Our site, #23, has space for 3 tents. There are no hookups and just pit toilets, but the pit toilets are the nicest I've come across. Enclosed in a nice modern building, and they don't smell. The campground host lights a scented candle inside the toilet building at night. The road through the campground and leading to it has many rills and washouts, so drive slowly. Each is marked by orange cones to give you a heads up. I personally would not want to drive a camper through here, or try to park it at a site, but we saw several smaller campers and camper trailers here. Beautiful scenery!FYI- you might not want to pitch your tent under trees that have pinecone bits underneath where squirrels have been eating. You might get woken up earlier than you want by pinecones being dropped on your tent! Cute little squirrels, though.
August 16 · Susan SchreinerThis was a beautiful hike, not too hard, a bit steep in some spots, but still really nice. Going in August, you don't have as many flowers out, early summer there are more flowers and it's really colorful which makes for an enjoyable hike. The lake was beautiful as well, great view from both above looking down at it and when you go down and hike around it.
August 22 · Kirstin ReeseBeautiful, well maintained campground. The most clean, best smelling outhouses I've ever been in.
