4.0
Amazing experience! The staff was super friendly and we got some great suggestions for the area from them! We were lucky and got an amazing tent site with a view directly of Mount Katahdin. Also very calm, and we were able to rent kayaks and tubbing for the entire day for 35$. The tent sites were a bit expensive (20$ per person) but over all our experience was so great we are definitely planning on returning next year. - Mathilde Williatte-Battet

Beyond the scenery, Abol Bridge Campground & Store provides a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Reviewers frequently note the peacefulness of the campground, even when it's bustling with outdoor enthusiasts. This ability to maintain tranquility while serving as a crucial waypoint for so many adventurers speaks volumes about their operation. For thru-hikers tackling the final miles of the Appalachian Trail, the store is often described as an "oasis" – a place to resupply, recharge, and enjoy a much-needed hot meal. For families and casual campers, the opportunity to rent kayaks and inner tubes for a full day of fun on the river, all while being surrounded by Maine's natural grandeur, makes Abol Bridge a truly exceptional choice for experiencing the great outdoors. It’s a place that genuinely understands the needs of those who cherish Maine’s wild spaces.

Abol Bridge Campground & Store is perfectly positioned at 3969 Golden Road Mile 19, Millinocket, ME 04462, USA. This address places it directly on the famous Golden Road, a private logging road that serves as the main artery through the vast North Maine Woods. While it may feel remote, its location is actually strategic for accessing some of Maine's most iconic outdoor destinations.

Its most significant accessibility highlight is its immediate proximity to Baxter State Park. Abol Bridge Campground serves as a gateway to the southern end of the park, making it an ideal base for those aiming to hike Mount Katahdin, explore the extensive network of trails within Baxter, or simply enjoy its untouched wilderness. For Appalachian Trail thru-hikers, Abol Bridge is a critical landmark, situated just south of the park boundary and providing essential services before or after their final ascent of Katahdin. This makes it an invaluable resource for both hikers completing their epic journey and those beginning their explorations.

Furthermore, the campground's location on the West Branch of the Penobscot River offers direct access for various water-based activities. The ability to rent kayaks and tubes on-site means you can easily embark on a scenic float or paddle without needing to travel far. While the Golden Road is primarily a gravel logging road, it is generally well-maintained and navigable by most vehicles, though drivers should be aware of active logging traffic. The nearby town of Millinocket provides essential services, including groceries, gas, and additional dining options, ensuring that campers can stock up on supplies before heading further into the wilderness or after their adventures.
