Both Hillcrest River Campground and Canal Tunnel River Campground are ideally positioned in Cumberland, Maryland, offering excellent accessibility for residents throughout the state and beyond. Hillcrest River Campground is located at 10410B Hillcrest Drive, Cumberland, MD 21502, USA. While the provided address specifies "Campground 1," it is commonly known as Hillcrest River Campground. This location provides convenient access for vehicles, with sufficient space for various RV sizes and tent setups.
Canal Tunnel River Campground, specified as "1 Elizabeth St Campground 2," Cumberland, MD 21502, USA, is more broadly associated with the Paw Paw Tunnel area of the C&O Canal National Historical Park. While "1 Elizabeth St" might be a general address for a section of the park, the Paw Paw Tunnel Campground is specifically located at Mile 156 on the C&O Canal Towpath, near the town of Paw Paw, West Virginia, but on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. For those driving to the Paw Paw Tunnel Campground, the most common directions involve following MD State Route 51 South/E Industrial Road from Cumberland for approximately 24 miles, where the campground will be on the left side of the road. This makes it a destination easily reachable by car from Cumberland and surrounding areas.
The key to the accessibility of both campgrounds lies in their proximity to major Maryland routes and, crucially, their direct connection to the C&O Canal Towpath and the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP Trail). This means that whether you're arriving by car, bike, or even on foot, navigating to these beautiful riverside spots is straightforward. For cyclists, the ability to bike directly to the campsite after a scenic ride from places like Frostburg is a huge draw, as highlighted by a satisfied customer who recommended the "18 miles back to the campsite through Cumberland" with a significant decline, making for an enjoyable ride. The easy access ensures that Maryland families and adventurers can spend less time traveling and more time enjoying their outdoor escape.

We stayed on a site by the river and it was absolutely amazing for our group of 13! We brought kayaks and bikes - and EVERYONE loved the weekend. Donelly was amazing - and the site was stunning! We highly recommend driving up to Frostburg and biking the 18 miles back to the campsite through Cumberland — it’s 1400 ft decline, 49 ft incline — you barely have to pedal and the scenery is worth it.We only showered once at the other campsite - and it was hot and clean. The ports potty on our site was pristine.Overall - everything was perfect and we’ll definitely be back!
Sep 21, 2020 · Krysti W.I stayed there 2 nights and the first night the people was very nice telling me everything I needed to know before I stayed it’s a beautiful campground. There is so much around you bike trails rivers edge for fishing swimming, fields for camping in many spots flying kites can even happen here put boat out this is the place for me to camp thank you hillcrest cam owners.
Jun 16, 2025 · Timothy VanMeterA beautiful site next to the River about 2 miles down the towpath from the GAP-C&O junction. Great ending point on my DC to Cumberland C&O bikepacking trip. However, there are no showers and only one water spigot. The single porta-potty was clean. All together, $25 a night is a bit steep for what you get.
Jul 27, 2023 · Thomas HuntleyCheap, nice view, not worth dealing with the owner. Poor communication and very rude. Kinda scary. Read other reviews before booking. My friends stayed here last night. Poor communication sent them to the wrong campsite at which they were confronted with a gate.Choice A: open the gate and turn around on the loop to go back to the right other campsite they were supposed to be at... Also owned by the same people.Choice B: Back their 43' long butt down the extremely narrow road the had just driven down.Obviously choice A. Which they told the owners when they arrived at the correct site. The following morning they get a call from owner telling them he went down to the other site at 2:30a.m. and said he saw ruts in the road and that he was coming to call the cops and have them thrown in jail. You get what you pay for. But you might want to spend a few extra bucks...I would at least take the time to read a few more reviews on this place before booking.

No privacy at all the old man that owns the place acts like you're an inconvenient to him , he spent as much time in my site as I did !! Stayed 30 days to lay a friend to rest was looking for some piece n quite to reflect but this guy was drove through my sight 8 ta 12 times a day😡 The wife is a nice lady how she puts up w him I don't know. The place isn't what you expected from the description!!! The store has no affiliation with campground, the showers are 2 Potts that let ya do everything at once if ya like that kinda thing. The location is next to interstate 68 and the trucks run all night ! I could only recommend a stay here if you don't have any other choice then get out asap!!!!👎👎👎👎👎
