The Colonies RV Travel Park & Country Store

501 Fenwick Rd, Fort Monroe, VA 23651, USA

4.0
Getting here is a little hectic. Tons of traffic. Once you’re on the island things get a bit nicer. The RV park is small and quaint. A little rundown. The camping store has a good selection. Nice employees. One washer and dryer. One bathroom stall for each, men and women. They’re big and have a shower in them. Usually clean. FHU in the circle/the sites with state names. W&E on the other side. You pull in and check in and then have to go out of the circle and over to your side. People in the circle tend to park in the way and you might have to go on the grass to go around. You get a day pass to go to the beach club. There’s a brewery on the island but it’s not the best. They do have lots of events though. The Fort is amazing. I’m not sure I’d recommend people staying here though lol. Depends what you’re looking for. If you want a little chaos and you don’t mind a little run down, you can make it work! - Katie Robb

Location and Accessibility

The Colonies RV Travel Park & Country Store is uniquely located at 501 Fenwick Rd, Fort Monroe, VA 23651, USA. This address places it squarely within the historic Fort Monroe National Monument, an area rich in American history situated at Old Point Comfort, where the Hampton Roads harbor meets the Chesapeake Bay. This location is a significant differentiator, offering a one-of-a-kind setting for RV travelers.

Accessing Fort Monroe and The Colonies RV Park involves navigating the Hampton Roads traffic, which, as some reviews suggest, can be "a little hectic" due to the region's busy roadways and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) construction. However, once on the island, the atmosphere "gets a bit nicer," transitioning to a more serene and historic environment. The park is well-situated for exploring Fort Monroe itself, with its beautiful beaches, historic sites like the Casemate Museum, and walking trails easily accessible.

For Virginians, its location means being immersed in history while still being connected to the broader Hampton Roads metropolitan area. While the immediate area of Fort Monroe is designed for historical exploration and relaxation, essential services and a wider range of dining and shopping options are available in nearby Hampton, which is just a short drive away. Major roads like I-64, while potentially subject to traffic, provide the main arterial access to Fort Monroe via Exit 268 (Route 169 East Mallory St/Ft. Monroe). This connectivity allows for convenient travel to Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and other parts of the region for further exploration or supplies.

Public transportation is available in the wider Hampton Roads area through Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), though direct routes to Fort Monroe might require transfers. For most RV travelers, personal vehicle travel remains the primary mode of transportation. The unique aspect of being on a National Monument means a blend of natural beauty and historical significance is literally at your doorstep, offering a distinctly Virginian experience. You can easily walk to beaches, explore the Fort, and enjoy the views of the Chesapeake Bay, making the initial journey well worth it for the destination's unique charm.
