Sunset Isle RV Resort Introduce
For RV enthusiasts in Florida who cherish authentic coastal experiences, Sunset Isle RV Resort in Cedar Key has long been a treasured destination. Known for its unique "old Florida fishing village vibe," this park offers a blend of tranquil waterfront living and a strong sense of community. While recent years have brought significant challenges due to hurricane activity, the spirit of Cedar Key and its residents, including those at Sunset Isle RV Resort, is one of remarkable resilience and rebuilding. For Florida locals, understanding the current status of such cherished places is key to planning future getaways and supporting the community's ongoing recovery.
Historically, Sunset Isle RV Resort was celebrated for its charm, friendly atmosphere, and stunning waterfront views. Guests loved the sense of community, the laid-back pace, and the opportunity to enjoy simple pleasures like amazing sunsets. However, it's important for prospective visitors to be aware of the significant impact recent hurricanes, particularly Hurricane Helene (2024), have had on Cedar Key and, by extension, Sunset Isle RV Resort. Reports indicate severe damage to infrastructure across the island, including roads and waterfront establishments. One review from late 2024 stated the park appeared "abandoned and in horrible condition," with broken windows and doors, and the town itself heavily damaged.
However, information from early 2025 and 2022 suggests that the park has changed ownership and is actively undergoing renovations and improvements, aiming to bring it "back to life." While docks may be gone due to hurricane damage, there's a commitment to rebuild. The overall sentiment from more recent (though still a few years old) positive reviews, indicates a desire to restore its "quirky little treasure" status. It's clear that Sunset Isle RV Resort is in a phase of recovery and renewal, working towards regaining its former appeal.
Sunset Isle RV Resort is located at 11850 FL-24, Cedar Key, FL 32625, USA. Cedar Key is a small, unique island city situated on Florida's Gulf Coast, known for its untouched natural beauty, rich history, and laid-back atmosphere. State Road 24 is the primary road connecting Cedar Key to the mainland, making the park relatively accessible by vehicle.
Accessibility to Cedar Key itself has faced challenges due to hurricane damage. As of early 2025, while the town is in recovery, major infrastructure like the new bridge might have experienced closures or damage, requiring patience and checking local reports before travel. Once on the island, the park's location on FL-24 is convenient for accessing the main part of town, including restaurants and shops, though many of these were also severely impacted by hurricanes and are in various stages of reopening. For RVers, navigating to the park involves typical Florida state roads, but once on the island, the unique, small-town character prevails. Visitors should be prepared for potential detours or limited services in the broader Cedar Key area as recovery continues. It's crucial for Florida locals planning a visit to verify the most current road conditions and local business operating statuses directly.
While Sunset Isle RV Resort has faced significant challenges, based on its historical offerings and the ongoing recovery efforts, it aims to provide essential services to its guests. It's important to note that the extent of currently available services might vary as rebuilding progresses.
RV Sites: The park offers designated RV sites, including both waterfront and interior options. Historically, these have featured full hookups (water, sewer, and electric) to accommodate various RV needs.
Motel Rooms: In addition to RV sites, the resort previously featured "tastefully appointed motel rooms," suggesting accommodation options for non-RVers or those seeking a different experience.
On-Site Laundry Facilities: Reviews from before the most recent hurricanes mentioned "on site laundry," which is a highly valued amenity for both short-term and long-term RV residents.
Bathhouses/Showers: Past reviews noted "private bath houses" and clean facilities, indicating that these were available. Their current status post-hurricane would need direct verification.
WiFi Access: "WiFi Available" was listed as a past amenity, which is crucial for modern travelers to stay connected.
Pet-Friendly: The park explicitly states "Pets are always welcome," making it an inviting option for those traveling with their furry companions.
Community Focus: While not a tangible service, the park's management and residents often fostered a strong "community spirit," which is a key part of the experience.
Sunset Isle RV Resort offers several unique features and highlights, reflecting its original charm and the ongoing efforts to restore it.
Waterfront Location and Views: The prime feature is its location on the water, offering "fabulous water views," especially at sunset. This makes it a picturesque spot for relaxation and enjoyment of Cedar Key's natural beauty. While docks were lost to hurricanes, plans for new floating ones are in motion.
Authentic "Old Florida Fishing Village" Vibe: The park is known for its unpretentious, laid-back atmosphere, distinct from large, commercialized resorts. It captures the essence of a traditional Florida coastal town.
Close to Historic Cedar Key: Located "a mile away from Historic Cedar Key," guests have easy access to the town's unique shops, local restaurants (as they reopen), and cultural attractions. Golf carts are a popular mode of transportation on the island.
Peace and Tranquility: The park's focus is on "peace and tranquility," offering an escape from traffic jams, red lights, and high-rise developments. This creates a relaxing environment for visitors.
Outdoor Activities: Historically, the area facilitated activities like "Kayaking, Fishing, Star Gazing, and peaceful nights around our Campfire," inviting guests to immerse themselves in nature.
Renovations and Improvements: Under new ownership, the park is actively undergoing "renovations and much needed site improvements," including fresh paint and general clean-up, indicating a commitment to enhancing the guest experience despite past challenges.

Sunset Isle RV Resort Reviews
We stayed here over the years and loved it. We just drove to Cedar Key today and found this place to be abandoned and in horrible condition. Windows and doors were all broken . Don't go there. My husband and I went to the main part of town on the water. The roads were closed, so we got out and walked by the restaurants on the water, which were beautiful. They are all damaged and closed because of the hurricane that hit it. The new bridge was new was closed due to hurricane damage. We loved Cedar Key and I cried to see the devastation. It is heartbreaking.
Dec 27, 2024 · Martin ByrdalThey never even bothered to get back with us to stay there. Looks like a cute place too. 😢
Apr 16, 2025 · Alex KunzeAre there plans to reopen? Here now and completely over grown and abandoned. All doors and windows appear to broken
Apr 03, 2025 · Robert KilpatrickAlas, Sunset Isle is no more. It was obliterated in the 2024 hurricane and is abandoned still as of 5-2025.
Apr 27, 2025 · Chris HartPrime spot to stay in Cedar key! Close enough to downtown we rode scooters. Sites are tight if park is full. We had a waterview and it was beautiful. Boat ramp is around the corner and cute little Bottle bar is next door. Wish there was a pool and there is no amenities really at all. I did see a kayak rack, but no kayaks. There is a dock to fish from or sit and enjoy the views.
